Be it known that I, CHARLES DUSTIN-,- a citizen of the United States, residingyat Avoca, in the county of Steuben: and; State ofNew York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lantern-Lighters, of which the following is a specification. The primary object of the invention is the provision; of simple and effective means, whereby a lantern or analogous form of lamp may. be conveniently; lighted without requiring the lifting of the globe on the separation of the lamp from. the lantern body and to overcomethe difficulty. aperson has in lighting; when there is a draft or wind. The invention provides a match scratchingattachment which may bereadily fitted to the base of the lantern of standardmakes, said match scratcher being of such construction and arrangement as not. to interfere with f.

The invention consists of a match scratcher having an opening at one end near the globe retaining flange for the introduction of the match when lighted preliminary to applying such match to the wick for lighting the same.

This attachment is fitted to the bottom or side of the base and comprises upper and lower guides and terminal stop, the latter being in position to arrest the movement of the match when lighted so as to direct the match through the opening in the base, this, however, can be used with or without the sto 3.

The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a lantern base embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a20a of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the preferred form of match scratch. Fig. 5 is a modification. Fig. 6 is a further modification showing the match scratch, forming an integral! part of the base,such match scratch being. pressed in: the side or rimof the base.

The numeral 1 designates the base of a lantern which may be of any form com monly provided and embodies'a bottom and an upstanding. rim or flange, the latter adapted to encircle the lower end of the globein the manner well understood. An opening 2 is formed in the bottom of the basenear the globeretainingrin'i or flange and provides for the introduction of the llghted matoh when it is idesired tolight the lantern. The match scratchergis located upon the or bottom of the base land may be secured or pressed into the latter in any way that is preferable or constructed of a sheet metal blank embodying a rear wall 3 and upper flange 4:, a bottom flange 5 and terminal stop 6 which arrests the movement of the match when scratching the same.

The rear wall 3 is roughened to provide an abrasive surface for igniting the match when the latter is moved thereover in contact therewith as mentioned above. The upper flange 4 provides convenient means for securing the match scratcher to the base 1, unless match scratcher is pressed into base as mentioned above. The bottom flange 5 supports the match and insures the same being retained in contact with the rear wall 3. The match scratcher is arranged with the stop 6 in line with one end of the opening 2 so as to arrest the movement of the match and insure guiding The arm 7 if used forms apart of the blank from which the match scratcher is formed and preferably consists of an extension of a bottom flange 5 of which the terminal stop 6 likewise forms a part. The army 7 also assists materially in holding the match scratcher in place if stop 6 is used.

if preferred, may be cut away opposite the opening 2 so as not to obstruct the same and the entrance of the lighted match therethrough.

The rear wall of the match scratcher may be straight, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 4:, or it may be of V form as indicated in Fig. 5. In some instances the guide arm 7 may be dispensed with, hence the modification illustrated in Fig. 5 omits such part.

From the foregoing description, takenin connection'with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have describedthe principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is

1. In a lantern and in combination with the base having an opening near its outer edge, a match scratcher located below the base and to one side of the opening therein and comprising a rear roughened wall, upper and lower parallel flanges at the longitudinal edges of the rear wall and a guide arm at one end of the rear wall and passing through the opening of the base thence over the top thereof to direct the lighted match to the wick tube.

2. In a lantern and in combination with the base having an opening near its outer edge, a match scratcher located below the base and to one side of the opening therein and comprising a rear roughened wall, upper and lower parallel flanges at the longitudinal edges of the rear wall, a stop at one end of the rear wall and a guide arm in line with the stop and extending through the opening of the lantern base and over the top thereof to direct the lighted match to the wick, the upper flange terminating short of the stop and guide arm so as not to obstruct the passage of the lighted match through the opening of the lantern base.
