mosses.
T aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ELMER J. Larson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Skagit and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in toys and has for its primary object to provide an improved form of sounding toy.
Another object is to provide a sounding 5 toy which will be of extremely simple and cheap construction.
A further object is to provide a sounding toy which may also be employed as a package or receptacle for vending various articles such as candy, peanuts, pop-corn, or the like.
A further object is to provide a sounding toy of this character which may be formed principally of tin or the like and will include a pendulum within a can or the like suspended from the end of the can to which is connected a resined sounding cord, whereby the pendulum will be operated upon pulling of the cord, thereby also causing the pendu- :lum to swing against the interior of the can.
A further object is to provide a double sounding toy of the above stated character and connect the pendulum and cord to the end of the can in such manner that, if desired, the can may be held andswung to cause the pendulum to strike the interior of gthe can and compel the same to ring as a 'ibell, without pulling upon the cord.
A still further object is to provide a toy 40 of the above stated character, constructed in such manner that it may be operated to produce one sound or the two sounds, as desired.
A still further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction and op eration of devices of this character and increase the eiiiciency thereof without increasing the cost of the same.
With the above and other objects in View, my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved toy; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan vlew thereof; Fig. 3 is an elevational view show- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing one manner in which it may be employed to produce a sound; and Fig. 4 is a similar view showing another manner in which it may be employed to produce a dilferent sound Referring more specifically to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 designates the can or body of the device which is open at one end while the opposite end is closed by the cap 2 in the center of which is secured the anchor member 3. Within the perforated end of the anchor member within the can or body 1 is engaged one end of the pendulum rod 4 upon the opposite end of which is mount-ed the pendulum or weight 5. Within the opposite or outer end of the anchor member 3 is secured one end of a sounding cord 6 which is coated with resin or the like to pro duce a peculiar sound when the cord is grasped and pulled tightly toward its outer or free end.
It will be seen that if the can or body 1 is grasped by one hand at its closed end and the cord 6 pulled between two fingers or across the palm of the other hand, the toy will be caused to produce two different and distinct sounds as the weight 5 on the pendulum rod 4 will strike against the interior of the can or body 1 and cause the same to ring at the same time the peculiar sound is being produced by the cord 6. If it is desired to allow the cord alone to sound, it is simply necessary to hold the can or body 1 at its open end and engage a finger with the weight 5 and thereby prevent movement of said weight. On the other hand, the can or body 1 may be held by one hand at its closed end and moved the same as a hand operated bell, leaving the cordG free, but causing the pendulum rod 5 to swing and compel the weight 6 to strike against the interior of the can or body 1 and cause a ringing of the same.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a double sounding toy which will be of extremely simple construction and operation and cheap to manufacture and one in which the can or body portion is of such form that it is adapted to contain candy, peanuts, pop-corn, or the like.
l/Vhile I have shown the preferred form of my device, it will be understood that minor changes in the details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the anchor member, and a flexible member secured to the anchor member.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body closed at one end, an anchor member secured in the closed end of said body, a pendulum mounted upon the anchor member Within the body, and a flexible member secured to the anchor member outwardly of the body.
3. A device of the class described comorisin a bod member means for closin one end of the body member, an anchor member secured in said means, a flexible operating member secured to the operating ELMER J. LARSON; l/Vitnesses: I
