CORNER BEAD OR STRIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 2, 1913.
Patented Aug. 1111, jlllllll.
Serial no. 787,777.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. SANoERsoN, of Niles, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corner Beads or Strips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to corner beads or strips and clips for securing them to a wall.
More specifically stated, the invention contemplates an improvement upon the construction shown and described in Letters Patent No. 780,344, issued to William G. Hurlhert, January 17, 1905 andthe primary objects of the invention are to avoid all tendency of the bead to pivot or move laterally relatively to the clips, to increase the extent of the projection of the bead beyond the clips, and also to secure additional anchorage for the plaster.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing a bead applied to a wall. Fig. 3 shows a clip and a portion of the bead detached.
In general appearance the head 1 has substantially the characteristics of the bead shown in the Hurlhert patent but instead of being provided with a circular trough at the longitudinal bending line of the single piece of metal from which the bead is formed, and having the clip fit in said trough, I provide a rib or laterally-projecting hollow portion 3 at the bending line, and bring the two sides of the single piece of metal together into parallelism at 4c, and then immediately adjacent these parallel portions I form each side with two fiat angular portions 5, and from one of these angular portions each side is diverged as at 7, as in the Hurlbert patent.
8 designates the clip. This is shown as consisting of a single metallic plate bent back upon itself to form divergent arms 9, designed to he tacked or otherwise secured to a wall or joist. In its bent-over portion the clip is substantially square in cross-section, or, more properly speaking, isdiamond-shape. This angular portion of the clip is designed to interlock with the squared-portion of the head, the flat sides of the respective members bearing against one, another so that the bead and clip are firmly held together and all danger of rocking or other lateral motion is avoided. By having the hollow portion 3 and the connecting parallel meeting portions 4 beyond the pocket or channel for the clips a greater projection of the bead is obtained, and furthermore the angles of the squared portion of the bead extend outwardly beyond the plane of the arallel meeting portions 4, thereby atfordmg additional anchorage for the plaster at the point where most needed. To position a clip within the head, it is only necessary to squeeze the divergent members of the former, and by bending such members outwardly the bead and clip will remain in fixed relation.
I have shown the bead as having openings in the angular portions thereof, and I have found that by thus locating the Openings additional anchorage for the plaster is obtained.
The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A head having a hollow portion along its longitudinal edge, a squared portion separated from the hollow portion by parallel meeting portions, and outwardly extending flanges projecting from said squared portion, in combination with a clip having a squared portion fitting in the squared portion of the bead.
2. A bead having a hollow portion along its longitudinal edge, a squared portlon separated from the hollow portion by parallel meeting portions, said squared portion entending outwardly beyond the plane of sand parallel meeting portions, in cornbmat on with a clip having a squared portion fitting in the squared portion of the bead.
In testimony whereof, I have slgned this specification in the presence, of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT L. SANDERSON.
