Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. Rama, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Typographs, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explainedand the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present improvements relate to a modification of the so-called Ludlow typograph, whereby it may be adapted to cast slugs, or lines-of-type, of greater transverse width than the ordinary line so as to accommodate larger type of. the kind frequently desired for printing head-lines and advertisements. By this means the necessity for maintaining a stock of sorts is done away androom sincewi-th an ordinary fontof matrices any amount of large type matter may be set up, whereas in the case of advertisements, a whole page is blocked out in large type. I am aware that it has heretofore been sought to" cast slugs with initial letters larger than the body face, by simply placingthe matrix of the larger letter, or other character, so as to overlap the front face of the mold. The slug thus formed will have a thin, overhanging body of metal bearing such larger character on its face, which overhanging portion is adapted to extend 'over the face of'an adjacent, smooth slug. Although such extended character may be thus supported from below, it is, nevertheless, so thin that it has a tendency to curl, especially on cylinder presses and when subiecte'd to hard use.
The object of the present invention is to avoid the difficulty just noted and provide a slug fully as strong and durable as the ordi nary one of uniform thickness throughout. To the accomplishment of this and related ends, said invention then consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosedl means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention maybe used;

In the arrangement of the parts illustrated in Fi 1, the form of mold there up: pearing is shown in association witha sup portin bed 1, which may be the trough i of the udlow typograph as at present constructed, or with any other suitable support, whereon the matrix bars 2'.are adapted to rest. For the casting of slugs of the kind under consideration, matrixbara'babhhav ing only a single character 3, are ordinarily used, these short bars replacing the longer bars with a number of matriceswhichare regularly employed. It should further be borne in mind that the present impro'ved To hold said matrix to the mold from beneath, only the nozzle 6 of the casting pot and the terminal squirt plate 7 carried by said nozzle, appearing in the figure in question. v f
The mold 8 differs from preceding coristructions in that in place of a simple rectangular slot being provided therein to re' 1 condition of the parts. When such plate is in position, it will be observed that a ledge or ofi-set is left on each side of the first named slot of standard dimensions between the same and such enlarged slot-portion.
As illustrated in Fig. 6 the slug 9 formed In by a mold of this construction is of considery largerwidth in its upper portion than in the body proper, such upper portion supporting or carrying the character 10 formed by the matrix on its upper face. The latter is thus cast upon a solid body of metal and does not consist of a thin strip-like extension from the relatively narrow body of the slug. I c

Where it is desired I the enlarged slu portions to suit characters proper, so as to provide a slot of an of diflerent 'widt s, as where more than one kind of headline or large type is used, it is only necessary to remove the plate 12 and substitute a second plate having a larger or smaller slot 13, s is required under the circumstances. By thus taking ofl one plate and substituting another, the mold may be readily changed to cast slugs with enlargements of different widths and when it is desired to cast slugs having a normal width, a plate may be substituted having a slot of the same dimensions as the slot in the mold.
lln Fig. 3, 1 have illustrated a modified form of plate for casting a slug with'an enlarged upper portion. Here the plate consists of two sections 14, 14, relatively adjustable transversely of the slot in the moldd8,
esired width within predetermined limits. The outer limit of adjustment will of course correspond with the maximum size of type which it is desired to cast, while the inner limit will similarly correspond with the width of the body portion of the mold-slot, which of course is that of the standard line.
By meansof the foregoin construction it will be obvious that not on y may slugs be cast with enlarged type with the greatest facility, but thatthe slugs formed in this fashion are of superior quality both in durability and in the clearness of the impression which they are capable of giving by spaces beto vary the width of moans geous features of the improved mold con-- stituting the present invention; there being no intention, in referrin typograph, to imply a adaptability of such mold.
The blanks 11, which are utilized as above described in assembling the slugs into the form to fill out the spaces between the slug bodies, may be either carried in stock, or else cast as desired with the same mold by closing the mold aperture or slot in the fashion indicated in cross section in Fig. 7. For this purpose 1 preferably employ a block 15 having its dimension at right angles to the line of section as great as that of the mold face and having a depending lug 16 adapted to rest on the ledges formed between the main or body portion of the mold slot and the enlarged portion thereof so as to close completely the opening of such body ortion of the mold slot. VVhe're blanks thus ormed are to be utilized, the overhanging portions of the slug formed inthe fashion previously set forth must, of course, be respectively equal to a particular imitation in the in transverse width to the thickness of the body portions of the slug-formed in such body portion of the mold.
Where a line of type is desired, terminating short of the ends of the slug body, members 17 similar to the block 15, but narrower. may be utilized to close the corresponding portions of the mold opening. The lugs 18 on these members, however, will require to extend entirely. across the enlarged upper portion of such mold opening (see Fig. 9) in order to prevent themolten metal from escaping past. Furthermore, suchlug, unlike lug 16, sto s short of the bottom of the enlarged mol portion, so asnot to interrupt the continuit of the web that constitutes the enlarge portion of the comleted slug, as shown in Fig. 10. Said memers 17 will, in other respects, resemble the matrix bars 2 which carry the matrices for the castingof the type, and are-assembled along with such bars as indicated in the sectional view of Fig. 9,being capable of interposition between words in the line as well as of use in closing the ends of the line. I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. A mold for casting slugs, or lines of type, comprising a body formed with a casting slot of standard dimensions and a plate secured. to the face of said mold-body and formed with a slot registering with but larger than such first-named slot.
2. A mold for casting slugs, or lines of type, comprisin a body formed with a castlarger than such first-named slot, all such enlarged slot extending equally on each side of the smaller slot. v 3.
