BURRELL CANNON, OF LONGVIEW, TEXAS.
APPARATUS FOR AUTOMATICALLY PHOTOGRAPHING PERSONS MOVING ALONGrA GONFINED WAY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1914.
Application filed June 4, 1918. Serial No. 771,759.
To all 'Illl am it may concern: I
Be it known that I, BURRELL CANNON, a citizen of the United States, resident of Longview, in the county of Gregg and State of Texas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Apparatus for Automatically Photographing Persons Moving Along a Confined Way; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itvappertainsto make and use the invention, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view of the invention as applied to a railway car. Fig. 2is a side view of the invention partly in section and partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a detail plan View. The invention has relation to apparatus or means for counting or checking fares or persons by photography, designed to automatically photograph all persons entering a place, building or vehicle where fares or tickets of admission are collected; or it may be in some cases to photograph persons leaving the place or vehicle.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of devices hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 1 designates acamera, wherein the reel 2, carrying the film, is operated in a step by step manner by persons entering or leaving, to expose new portions of the film, a shutter 3 of the camera being also operated to expose the particular portion of the film upon which the picture is taken.
The means of operation consists preferably of a mat 4, placed in the entrance or exit, so that all persons passing through will necessarily step thereupon,--sai'd mat being of air tight character and provided usually with springs 5, to maintain the cover part of the mat in normal raised position; a tube 6 leading from the interior of the mat, and having at its opposite end communication with a cylinder 7, wherein works a'piston 8, the piston rod 9 having suitable operating connections with the shutter of the camera and with the filmcarrying reel, so that the shutter will be first operated and afterward the reel, upon the same stroke of the piston to move the film, to expose a different portion thereof upon the succeeding movement of the shutter, the film being moved at intermediate times to the movement of the shutter.
The mat being compressed by the weight of the person stepping thereupon, the air is caused to pass through the tube into the cylinder and operate the piston. When the person steps from the mat, thesprings will raise the coverof the mat to normal raised position and a new portion of air will be admitted to the mat through an air inlet opening 10. Usually the film carrying roller will have a ratchet wheel 11, the pawl 12 of which will be operated to turn the roller and cause the film to move by an operating connection with the piston rod.
The camera may be placed to take either a front or aprofile picture, and at night or upon dark days, a suitable light may be used.
It will be obvious that the invention may be carried out by different mechanisms, but
a camera having rollers and a film carried by said rollers, said camera having its lens in position to photograph persons moving along said way, and automatically-resetting means in said way having an operating connection with the shutter and with a filmcarrying roller of the camera, said means being adapted to be successively actuated by In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, perslons moving afiong said1 Way to succesin presence of two Witnesses.
vsive y move said s utter an expo'seaportion T of the film, and at intermediate times to BURRELL CANLON' successively move said film to expose a Wi n sses:
different portion thereof upon the succeed- B. A. SKIPPER,
ing movement of said shutter. W. L. MATTHEUS.
