JULIUS J. GERION, 0F BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT;
WORK-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'July 28, 1914.
Application filed April 22, 1914'. Serial No$833 598l To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JULIUs J. GERION, a subject of the King of Belgium, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fa1rfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Work-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in work-clamps and refers particularly to that class of clamps which are employed in work shops for clamping in the novel construction and arrangement of parts shown upon the accompanying sheet of drawings as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference will be found to denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and of which,
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my improved work-clamp in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a front edge view of the clamp shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the clamp taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, but shown in a released position, and, Fig. 4 shows a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawing 6 represents the main member of the clamp and which as will be noted is substantially L shaped in form and includes a longitudinal body portion and an extended lower jaw 7 in which a bearing 8 is swivelly mounted. This bearing serves to engage andconform to the face or side of the work to be clamped by that particular member of the clamp and so that the work can also better conform to the position of the upper jaw.
The upper jaw which I have designated as 9 is pivoted to the upper end of the longi-' tudinal member of the body 6 by means of a screw 10 that passes through both of the saidparts. Theconnected end portion of theupperjaw-is divided to receive the re duced end of the main body portion so that the two when assembledintermesh to form a rigid and substantial pivotal connection.
In thecuter' end portion. of this jaw 9 is mounted-a clamping screw 11 that threadedly engages the outer end of the said jaw by a right hand thread and upon its outer end is provided witha left hand thread that engages a sleeve 12 which is fitted to slide in a socket 13 of the said j aw. This sleeveforms a clamping-member to engage the top side of the work tobe secured and obviously is arrangedin alinement with theswivel 8 seated in the lower jaw. The purpose of the doublethre'ad upon the screw 11 is to insure a more effective and'rigidoperationof the parts,- both in tightening and loosening the work. A'sln'gle rotatlon' ofthe screw serves to lead the same a given distance into the jaw and likewise to shove the clamp 12'twice .thatdistance out from the other side, thus forming a quick acting screw. A return movement of the screw obviously has the reversed eifect and serves to quickly run back.
A yoke 14 is pivotally connected to the upright of the member 6 and is clearly shown in the drawings, the lower end being housed in a suitable recess 15 of the said member 6 and is pivotally supported therein through a pin 16 that passes through the j,
said member and yoke. The upper end of this yoke extends through a slot 17 in the upper aw and the outer end portion is provided with a cross bar 18 that engages the top edge of the jaw in a way to draw-it down when the yoke is shoved outward. I provide, s shown in the drawings, a particular form of device for operating this yoke and through it the upper jaw which as will be noted includes a cam 19 that is pivoted upon a pin 20 supported in the upper end of the body 6. This cam includes an eccentric surface that bears against the back edge of the yoke and is also provided with a shoulder 21 against which a thumb screw 22 operates, said screw being seated in a cross plate 23 secured to the top edge of the upper jaw. It will thus be seen that by the turning of the said screw the extended arm of the cam will be shoved down against the back loo of the yoke which in turn will force the yoke out and the upper jaw down in proper position to engage the work. After the clamp has thus been set in position the work is finally tightened by the operation of the screw 11. On the other hand, if it is desired to release the work held by the clamp the operator would in that case preferably give the screw 22 a few turns and not necessarily touch the screw 11. The work in this way can readily be released and the clamp removed with little or no trouble.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a work-clamp of the class described, the combination of an L shaped jaw member, a co-acting jaw pivotally mounted to the said L shaped jaw and having a slot through its center portion, a yoke pivoted to the said L shaped jaw member and extended through the said slot and having a cross bar to engage the outer edge port-ion of the said coacting jaw member in a way to close the same by the operation of the yoke, and a screw for operating the said yoke. V
2. In a work clamp of the class described, the combination with a main jaw member, of a co-acting aw pivotally connected thereto, a yoke pivotally mounted in the said main jaw and extending up through the pivotally connected jaw and having a cross member to engage the outer edge of the said co-acting jaw member, an eccentric cam pivotally mounted within the said oo-acting jaw and arranged to engage the back edge of the yoke to force the same forward in a way to close the jaw, and a screw mounted in the said co-acting jaw and arranged to engage the eccentric cam to operate the same and the yoke.
3. In a work clamp of the class described, the combination of an L shaped jaw having an engaging member socketed therein to engage the work, a co-acting jaw pivotally mounted in the said L shaped jaw member, a clamping screw in the outer end of the said co-acting jaw and having upon it a right hand thread to engage the jaw and a left hand thread to engage a work engaging member, a work engaging member mounted upon the said screw and adapted to be operated thereby, a yoke pivoted to one of the said members and adapted to engage the other of said members to operate the same, and a screw for operating the said yoke.
Signed at Bridgeport in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut this 18th day of April A. D., 1914.
