- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J 111$ 28, 1914.
Application filed July 18, 1913. Serial No. 779,691.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM U. Gram- 4 rrrns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vater-Closet Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in water closet apparatus and it has particular relation to the construction of means forming the communicating connection betweenthe flush tank and the closet hopper.
One object of my invention is to simplify, cheapen and render more efiicient in service, the construction of apparatus of the character of that illustrated and to be hereinafter described.
My invention comprehends the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view showing partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section a water closet apparatus provided with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section from front to rear of the connecting communication between the hopper and the flush tank which embodies my invention. v
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a closet hopper or bowl and 2 a seat hinged thereto at 3. The said seat is provided with arms connected at their rear ends by the cross-piece 4 which constitutes a weight. This weight cooperates with the arms 4 to effect tilting upwardly of the seat 2 The cross-piece 4" is provided with an adjustable screw 5 for a purpose to be hereinafter stated.
When the seat 2 is depressed it contacts with the upper end of a rod 6 and depresses the same. The lower end of the rod 6 is connected to one end of a lever 7 pivoted at 8. The opposite end of said lever beyond its pivot is provided with a weight 9 which operates normally-to 'hold the rod 6 in elevated position and at the Same time hold the valve 10 in closed position and the valve 11 in opened position.
When the valve 10 is opened (the valve 11 being simultaneously closed) water flows from the supply pipe 12 and the delivery pipe 13 to the pipe 14 and thence into the closed flush tank 16.
A pipe 20 is connected at its upper end to the lower end of the pipe 14 and at its lower end to a coupling 21 which is provided with a discharge nozzle or outlet 22 situated in the closet 1 at its rear side.
As the water enters the flush tank 16 the air escapes therefrom through the pipe 25 which extends down through the pipe 14 and is connected at its lower end to a conduit or passage-way 26 which is integral with the pipe 20. The upper end of the pipe 20 is situated a short distance below the top of the tank 16. The lower end of the passage-way 26 is connected with the interior of the closet hopper by means of the pipe 27 as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
In order to compel the water to flow from the delivery pipe 13into the tank 16 instead of downward through the pipe 20 into the hopper 1,1 have provided a valve 30 which is adapted to close the opening 31 just below the point where the delivery pipe 13 connects with the pipe 1 L. The valve 31 is connected to the upper end (if the rod 32 which extends through the side of the pipe 20 downwardly so that its lower end is situated in proximity to the adjustable screw 5. When the seat 2 is depressed on to the hopper 1 the upper end ofthe adjustable screw 5 contacts with the lower end of the rod 32 and raises the same to close the valve 31. The rod 32 is connected to a flexible diaphragm 33 opening in the side of the pipe 20.
I claim 2- A water closet apparatus comprising a flush tank, said flush tank having a port for theexit of water, a bowl, a pipe communicating with the said port for conducting water from the said tank, a separate pipe terminating interiorly of the said tank at a which extends across a closed point below the closed top of the same, a In testimony that I claim the foregoing as coupling for connecting t e lower ends of my invention, I have hereunto signed my the said pipes to the said bpwl, iaid coupling name this 16th day of J u1y,A.
