To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD Wrsnosnx, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Wilmington, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to umbrellas and has for its object to provide an article of such class, in a manner as hereinafterset forth, with means for reducing to a minimum the liability of the blowing of the umbrella cover wrong side out by sudden gusts of wind.

A further object of the invention is to provide an umbrella with foldable ribs, each rib consisting of two sections and the lower rib sections having associated therewith, means to assist in opening the umbrella cover when the stretchers are being shifted to open position.

A further object of the invention is to providean umbrella having its ribs formed of sections the lower rib sections having associated therewith means for maintaining them extended.

With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the umbrella construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to, which fall within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 1s an elevation of an umbrella stick showing the adaptation therewith of a rib and stretcher constructed in accordance with this invention, the rib being in an extended position, Fig. 2 is an elevation illustrating the rib folded and further illustrating the sections of stick disassembled, Fig. 3 is a sectional detail illustrating the upper rib section and stretcher, Figs. 4 and 5 are details illustrating the position of the outer end ofthe stretcher in the upper rib section, and Flg. 6 is a detail, broken away, of the sectional rib.

by the intermediate section 8, a handle 11 upon one end of the section 7, a spring catch 12 carried by the intermediate section and a runner 1 1 is slidingly mounted u aon the sections 7 and 8 and which, when t e umbrella is open, is engaged by the catch 12. The handle section 7 is detachably connected to the intermediate section 8 as at 13, and the tip section 9 is detachably connected to the intermediate section 8 as at 15. Each of the .ribs of the umbrella includes an upper section 16 and a lower section 17, the latter being foldable outwardly and upon the section 16. The section 16 has its upper terminus reduced as at 18 and provided with an opening 19 through which extends the ordinary coupling means for connecting the section 16 to the notch 10. The section 16 is furthermore provided with a reduced lower portion 20 having an opening 21 and between the portions 18 and 20 the section 16 is enlarged and is substantially inverted U- shaped. The said enlarged portion is indicated at'22 and is formed near its upper terminus with inwardly extending flanges 23 and an outwardly extending stock 24. Arranged within the portion 22 in the lower terminus is a block 25, provided with a seat 26, and an incline surface 27. Secured within said portion 22 is a pair of holding springs 28, each of the latter has its upper end supported by the flange 23 and fixedly secured to the portion 22, as at 29. The lower ends of springs 28 are enlarged and oppose the seat 26. The function of the springs 28 will be presently referred to.

The lower section 17 of each rib has depending therefrom a pair of eyes 30 and 31 which constitute guides for a spring controlled holding arm 32. One of the eyes 30 provides an abutment for one end of a coil spring 33, the latter surrounds the rod 32, and has one end connected to the rod 32, as at 34;. The lower rib section 17 is pivotally connected as at 35 between the arms 36, of a support 37. Extending through the opening 21, of the lower terminus 20, of the rib section 16, is a pin 38, for pivotally connecting the lower end of the rib section 16 to the arms 36. The rod 32 extends between the arms 36 and beyond the pivot 35. The rod 32 has its inner end formed with an eye 39, to which is connected a flexible pulling member 40.

The reference character 41 denotes a stretcher, which has one end pivotally con until it is arrested by the stock 24. The

holding springs have a rounded portion, which assists in maintaining the head 42, against the seat 26. The stretcher 41 intermediate its ends is provided with an opening 43, through which extends the flexible member 401, the latter having its other end, as at 44, attached to the upper portion of the section 16 of the rib.

When the stretcher 41 is extended, the member 40 is taut, and under such oircu=mstances the member 40 will pull upon the rod 32, against the action of the spring 33 whereby the section 17 is maintained extended. When the stretcher 41 is lowered, the member '40 becomes slack, and the section 17 can be folded back upon the section .16. When the spreader 41 is shifted to open the rib, the action ofthe stretcher upon the member 40, will cause said member 40, to

sudden gusts of wind.

What I claim is An umbrella comprising a stick, a runner slidably mounted thereon, a stretcher pivotally connected to the said runner, a rib formed of an upper and lower section, said stretcher slidably mounted on the upper rib section, resilient members carried by said upper section and engaging said stretcher for maintaining the latter extended when the umbrella is open, a spring actuated nod carried by said lower section, and means connected to theupper section and to said rod and engaged by the stretcher for pulling the rod to maintain the lower section extended.
