GODFREY S. MAHN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONTAINER Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September as, 1913; Serial no. 791,913.
Patented July 21, 1914..
I improved lockm means holding the drawer in the casing an released from looking en'- gagement with the casing by pressure .between the thumb and fore-finger of the person desiring to open the box.
A further object is to provide a container of this character which is 1provided with im proved locking means t at automatically looks when. the drawer is moved into'the Possi With these and other objects in view, the
casing, and is securely held thereby against ility of accidental opening.
invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim. I In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my 1mprovements, showing the-thumb and forefinger of the operatorl in position to compress the drawer and release the same from locking engagement with the casing. Fig. 2 .isa View in transverselongitudmal section,
' and Fig. 3 is a View in vertical longitudinal section.
1 represents the outer casing and 2 the sliding drawer of my improved box or con tainer. Both casing and drawer areprefcrably of metal or other'elastic material and are of general oblong shape. The casrng 1 has a top and bottom 3 and 1 respectively connected by sides, 5, and one end 6, the other end of the casing open forthe entrance and exit of the drawer 2. p
The drawer 2 has a bottom 7 sides 8, and ends 9, but is provided with an'open top so that the cigars or other articles may be readily packed therein. .Ihc'sides 5 of caslock w en the ing 1 are recessed at their ends as shown at 10. These recesses extend from the open 1 end of the casing, and longitudinally of the grip of the sides 8 of the drawer 2 between the thumb and forefinger of the operator when the drawer is in its closed position as I, I '60 indicated clearly in Fig; 1.
The'sides 5 of easing 1, adjacent the inner .ends of the recess 10, are formed with outwardly pressed portions 11, which form on the innerface of the casing, recesses to receive similarly shaped rojections 12 forced outwardly from the sid s 8 of the drawer 2. These rojectin portions 11 and 12 interrawer is in its closed posit1on, so that the drawer will not accidentally fall open.
To open the box, the o erator places his a thumb and fore-finger in t e recesses 10, and
presses the sides 8 of drawer 2 toward each other, withdrawing the projections 12 from the pro ections 11, and enabling the drawer to be drawn out. As a matterof fact, the
operation of releasing the lock and moving t e drawer 1s simultaneous, as the operator may press the sides of the drawer inwardly. an withdraw it at the some time.
When the drawer is forced into the casing, its enlargements 12, by reason of their rounded formation in cross section, will press the sides 5 of the casing outwardly, until they reach the projections 11, when they will spring into locked engagement therewith.
Various slight changes might be made in the general-form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope or the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what .Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A cigar box formedof sheet metal comprising a rectangular drawer having an open top and closed bottom'sides and ends, a gasing conformin in shape and size to the drawer adapter to snugly receive the drawer and having one open end, said casing at its sides having recesses extending inwardly '55 casing, a distance suflicient to permit a free from its open" end adapted to receive the thumb and finger of an operator to compress the sides of the drawer toward each other, said drawer and casing having interlocking means separated bythe movement ofthesidesbf the drawer teward each other, substantially as described.
I Witnesses i In testimony whereof I have signeci name to this specification in the presence 3.15 two subscribing Witnesses.
