To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LADIsLAs LUKI, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swimming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in swimming devices.
The primary object of this invention is to provide a float for maintaining the body of a swimmer upon the surface of the water while manually propelled through the water by paddles operatively positioned upon the float.
A further object is to provide a swimming receptacle having a two-part hinged float collar and adapted for manual propulsion through the water by the occupant thereof.
A still further object is toprovide a water-proof receptacle adapted to receive a person and having a sectional collar float secured thereto while the occupant propels and steers the float through the water by paddles and a rudder mounted thereon.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view thereof, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon a plane at right angles to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the floating top showing the operating paddles, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view showing the locking bolt for the float sections.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the tubular receptacle is illustrated adapted to receive a persondesiring to employ the device for swimming and such receptacle may be formed of fabric, rubber or other suitable material. A collar float 11 is formed in two sections 12 and 13 each section being in the form of one-half of an annulus and with a sloping upper deck surface terminating in a flat annular top 14 while the under surface of the float is hollowed out forming the co-ncaved lower chamber 15 which is submerged when the float is positioned in the water.
The float collar sect-ions 12v and 13 are hinged together at their outer adjacent edge by means of hinges 16 while a sliding bolt 17 slidably mounted in two'similar brackets 18 carried by the collar section 12 is adapted for movement by the handle 19 for engagement with a keeper bracket 20 upon the other collar section 13. A latch 21 pivoted to the slanting face of the collar section 12 is provided at its free end with a hook 22 for engaging a pin 23 of the collar section 13 and is retained in engagement therewith by means of the pivoted engaging hook 24.
An operating shaft 25 is journaled upon the collar in brackets 26 and has a central crank portion 27 adjacent to the well 28 of the collar and whereby the swimmer positioned within the I receptacle may readily turn the shaft 25 and its terminal propeller blades 29 for the purpose of navigating through the water.
The rudder 30 is secured to a vertically pivoted post 31 and adapted to be turned by the manipulation of said post through the agency of its handle 32 while the rudder is maintained in the desired position by the latch 33 upon said post 31 engageable with the teeth of a rack 34 carried upon the top of the float,
The complete operation of the device will now be apparent in that the swimmer being within the receptacle 10 and positioned having the float 11 encircling his body, he may readily operate the propeller blades by turning the crank 27 and may also direct his course through the water by the rudder 30. By releasing the latch 21 and bolt 17 the float may be readily folded by moving its separate parts upon-the hinges 16 while the receptacle 10 being flexible allows the same to fit within the float concavity l5 and whereby the entire structure may be stored or shipped, the propeller shaft 25 being centrally severed forming two parts connected together by a sliding ferrule upon the crank portion 27.
