Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 23, 1914;.
Application filed April 19, 1913. Serial No. 762,270.
To all 1127mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE H. PHIL- BRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockland, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Oilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a flash light at tachment for hand oilers or the like, and it is the chief object thereof to provide a flash light device which is mounted upon the handle of the oiler and which is adapted to direct its rays of light upon the nozzle of the oiler so that the oil openings in hearings or lubricators may be illuminated during the act of filling the same with oil. In oiling overhead shaft bearings in a dark engine room, it is often necessary, in using the ord nary oiler, tomount a ladder with the oiler in one hand and a lantern or .torch in the other, so that the oiling may be accomplished accurately and Without wasting quantities of thelubricant. This operation is hazardous and troublesome at best, as should be readily apparent. In using my attachment for 0ilers, the task of oiling bearings in dark and secluded spots is greatlyfacilitated in. many respects.
A further object of the invention is to provide a special handle for oilers, to which the flash light device may be readily attachcd or may be readily removed therefrom and which is adapted to maintain the flash light device at the proper angle with re spect'to the discharge spout, the said flash light dBVLCG serving during such use as a 4 part of the handle so that it may be included in the graspof the operator and is in a po sition to be manipulated conveniently in flushing the light.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
l igure 1 is a side elevation of an engine oilcr having the flash light device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken through the handle and flash light device; and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view of the oiler handle, the flash light device being removed therefrom.
in the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body of an oiler which is provided with the usual discharge spout 2 and has a be of any ordinary well known type, but is preferably round in transverse section, and is provided with a longitudinally extending rib 8 having the lateral flanges 9 for slidable reception within the guide groove 10 formed between the inbent flanges 11 of the handle grip. The rib 8 and the handle groove are tapered toward the outer portion of the handle grip, so that means is provided for securely retaining the flash light device in applied position, wherein it is coextensive with the grip portion of the handle and is included in the operators grasp so that the push button 7 will be in a convenient position to be operated by the hand supporting the oiler.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accon'ipanying drawing, it should be seen that I have provided a very ,useful construction of oiler and an attach ment. therefor which should prove of great service to engineers and machinists and wherein the flash light attachment may be readily detached from the handle of the oiler for the purpose of replacement or repair of its parts. It is to be understood, however, that T do not necessarily limit my-, self to the exact details of constructiondescribed and shown, but that minor changes in the details of construction may be re sorted to in practice without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with an oiler having a discharge spout, of a handle therefor including an inclined grip portion provided. with a downwardly tapering groove, and a flash light device having a tapered rib adapted to be received within the said groove.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE H. PHILBRICK.
