To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BENESH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Napavine, in the county of Lewis and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stanchions; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in stanchions, and has for its principal object to provide 1 a stanchion which may be easily and quickly operated to release cattle therefrom. 1

;Another object of the invention is to provide a stanchion which is capable of being operated from the exterior of the barn in which the device is used should it be so desired.

A still further object of this invention is to provide a means for easily and quickly opening or closing a plurality of stanchions simultaneously.

"With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side. View in elevation of a portion of a row of stanchions' constructed in accordance with thisinvention showing the same in their open position, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing one of the stanchions "in its closed position, and Fig. 3 is an end View of Fig. 2.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the floor of a barn orsimilar structure havingsecured thereto the usual beam 2, which is provided at intervals with the upstanding members 3 which are held in spaced relation by means of the strip 4 which is nailed or otherwise secured thereto. Secured to the uprights 3 slightly below the strip 4 is provided the beam 5 which cooperates with the beam 6 which is spaced :1, short distance from the beam 2 and the uprights 7 and 8 to form the stanchion frame as clearly shown in thedrawings.

The stanchion which is designated generally by the numeral 9 comprises the horizontal bar 10 which is rotatably mounted on the spacing element 11 by means of the bo1ts12 which extend through the bar 10) the spacing element 11, andthrough the beam 6, thus rotatably securing the stanchion to the beam. Pivoted to each end of the bar 10 are the vertical bars 13 which are arranged to form the sides of the stanchion when the device is in use. Pivotally secured as at 14: to the bars 13 are provided the links 15, the free ends of which are pivoted, asat 16 to the vertical operating bar 17,=. he use. of which will appear as the descri ceeds. Suitably secured to each of the'uprights 3 are provided the brackets 18 having rota tably mounted therein the operating rod 19 which is provided at one end with a suitable crank 20 which may be placed in any desired position. An angular extension 21 is secured to the rod 19 in direct alinement with each of the stanchions 9 and the free end of each extension is pivotally secured as at 22 to the free end of the link 17 thus providing the connection between the operating rod 19 and each of the stanchions 9.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the animals head is placed in the open stanchion illustrated in Fig. 1 in the i1sual ,manner and upon turning the crank 20 insuc lia way as to raise the extension 21, it will be apparent that the link 17 will exert upward pull against the links 15, thus causing the free ends of the uprights 13 to swing toward each other until they; assume the position illustrated in Fig. 2. W hen it is desired that the animal be released from the stanchion it will be apparent that-by reversing the operation the link 17 will be pushed downwardly, thus forcing the free ends of the members 13 apart and permitting the animal to withdraw its head.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be madein the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A stanchion comprising a horizontally extending bar pivotally secured intermediate its ends, uprights pivoted to each end of the ion probar, links pivotally secured to the free ends of the uprights, a link pivotally secured to the free end ofthe aforesaid links, and

means connected to the free end of the link to move the same vertically and thereby close the stanchion. I

A stanchion comprising a horizontal .bar, pivotally secured intermediate its ends, uprights pivoted to each end of the horizontal bar, links pivoted to the ends of the uprights, a link pivotally connected to the free ends of the aforesaid links, a rotatable rod, an extension on said rotatable rod, means pivotally connecting the free end of the extension with the free end of the last mentioned link, and means at the end of the rod to operate the same.

3.
