Description

F. L. HOOPER.
BED ATTACHMENT.
APPLIOATION :FILED 11110.22, 1913.
. F. LH oo PER Q/H'nv/mo www@ MKM Cuisine? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCES L. HOOPER, 0F PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
:BED ATTACHMENT.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANCES L. Hoornn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for invalid beds, the main object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will eliminate the necessity of the patient being removed from the bed during t-he period of defecation.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is sim ple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation, parts being broken away and in section; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the sleeve and collar; and Fig. 4f is a top plan view of the cover.
Referring more particularly tothe drawings, 1 indicates the frame of the bed which supports the springs 2 and the mattress 3 which is provided with an opening 4:, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The posts 5 of the bed are connected by means of the bars 6 and 6, the longitudinal bars 6 are arranged somewhat lower than the transverse bars 6.
Secured to and supported at one end by means of the transverse bar 6 at the foot of the bed are the spaced channel'bars 7 which form the track for my improved device. The inner ends of the track are mounted upon and secured to the transverse bar 8 which is supported at each end of the standards 9, the lower ends of which are mounted upon the longitudinal side bars 6.
A suitable carrier 9 is provided which Specification of Letters Patent.

may be of any suit-able form open at one side, but preferably of the form shown in the accompanying drawings. The carrier 9 is supported upon suitable standards 10 having mounted in the lower ends thereof the wheels 11 which are adapted to run with- 1n the channel bars 7. A suitable bumper 12 pro-jects out from the bar 8 and is adapted to be engaged by the closed side of the carrier to limit the inward movement of the same when being arranged in position beneath the bed.
Secured to the front or open side of the carrier 9 at the bottom thereof is a channel bar 13 to the outer end of which is secured a handle member 14C whereby the carrier 9 may be readily removed from beneath the bed when desired. The channel bar 13 is adapted to run upon a wheel 15 supported by the standard 16 which in turn is supported by the rear transverse bar 6. From this it will be seen that by grasping the handie 14; and pulling upon the same, the carrier 9 may be withdrawn from beneath the bed to empty the chamber 17 and then readily placed back in position..
Arranged above the carrier when in its normal position is a sleeve 18 having an annular flange 19 at its upper end which rests upon and is secured to the frame of the springs 2. Disposed directly above and adapted to communicate with the sleeve 18 is a collar 20 which is arranged in the opening 4 of the mattress and is provided at one end with a flange 21 which rests upon the iange 19 and is bolted or otherwise secured to the same. The sleeve 18 and the collar 20 are both formed of porcelain or other desirable material and constructed substantially as herein set forth.
In order to close the upper end of the collar 20 a suitable cover 22 is provided and which is preferably constructed of the same material as the mattress. The collar 20 is provided upon its interior with an annular shoulder 23 upon which the cover 22 is adapted to rest when in its normal position. A handle member 211 is pivotally connected to the upper face of the cover 22 whereby the same may be readily removed when desired and said handle is adapted to be countersunk in the top of the cover so as to present a smooth and unbroken surface.
From the above it will be readily apparent that I have provided a simple and durable device for invalid beds which Will eliminate the necessity of the patient being removed from the bed during the period of defecation. It will also be apparent that I have provided a simple and durable device which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a comparatively small cost.
Vifhile I'have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it Will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice Without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. A device of the class described including spaced channel tracks, a carrier, having supporting Wheels arranged in said track, a channel bar connected with the carrier and a handle formed on the outer end 4of said bar to reciprocate the carrier upon said tracks.
2. A device of the class described including spaced channel tracks, a carrier, having supporting Wheels arranged in said track, a removable receptacle in said carrier, a bumper to limit the movement of the carrier in one direction, a movably supported channel bar connected With the carrier and a handle formed on the outer end of said bar to reciprocate the carrier upon said tracks.
8. A device of the class described including spaced channel tracks, a carrier having supporting wheels arranged Within Said ,r tracks, a channel bar connected with the L one end of the tracks and adapted to be arranged Within the channel bar, and a handle member formed on the outer end of said bar to reciprocate the carrier upon the tracks.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aHiX my signature in the presence of tivo Witnesses.
