Description

i e till FLOYD O. HUTCHINGS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BARBER-POLE.
Application filed May 23. 1912.
'SPBClllCZLlZiOIL of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 9, 191-41. Serial No. 659,134.
To'cZZ whom it may concern:
lie it linown that l, l norn O. llu'rcnixos, citizen of the United States, residing in e and county of San Francisco and oi" California, have invented new and end lmprovei'ncnts in Barberioles, oi :nich the following is a specification leis ii'ivention relates to advertising signs,
orzrrticulerly to barber poles.
is the object of the present invention to provide a barber pole, or other advertis- (I sign, involving a movable member \l'lllCLl y bu decorated with suitable or divers ers, and to combine with such a pole an i l'rhting system, the movable mcm- "n and the electric system, which include lights of various colors, being col l, con 'ollcd and operated by a common source iiun consists of van-colored elecic lamps mounted in a translucent or other on the pole; the illumination of the s sing controlled by a switch mechan operable by a motor which is arranged c drive or move the movable element of the s also comprises details of construction ch will be more fully explained by referthe accompanying drawings, in
a vertical sectional view Fig. 2 is an underneath the switch disk. i order render conspicuous and at- *2- c, l by day and night signs adbusiness establishments, 1 e present invention, which 3 part of n rotary cylinder or its suituble decorations, 3, on its surface; the cylinder esent instance being supported ed by a hanger d which proiuly through an annular cap or ihc hanger is provided with an ilur it, running on a ball-bear- ,d on the upper portion of the for 2 is protected by an exterior, i la. ni, glass casing or shell 8 which 50 is it ed in the cap and rests upon a base 9; tie cup 5? in the base being suitably and 'dly connec ed by one or more bolts 10 l may be inclosed for-decorative purpose." in polished or otherwise finished tubes abutting at their ends against the cap 5 ,s d the base or bottom memb r 9. Resting upon the upper portion of the cup 5 is a crown or bonnet 1; of ornutc design, upon which is superposed a transparent or translucent globe 13 of desired proportions. Within the globe 13 is arranged a cluster of lights ll to which current is conducted through a lead wire 15 which runs downwardly through the crown 12 and through the cup into one of the spacing tubes 11, and thence outwardly through the base 111C111- :Pl 9.
ll'hc conductor 15 is common to the lamps 14, and to each of the lamps is attached separate conductors 16 which are carried downwardly in the form of a cable 17 through one of the tubes 11; the conductors 16 being connected to respective, several brushes 18 which bear upon a switch disk 19 which is provided with an annular conductor 20, Fig. 2, which is energized by a lead wire 21 in circuit with the lead wire 15.
The switch disk is provided with a concentrically arranged series of segmental insulators 22, movable over the lamp wire brushes 18, so that these will be successively energized and the lamps .14 successively or simultaneously illuminated, as the case may be, during the rotary movement of the disk 20, which is shown as being secured to a shaft 23 extending from a suitable spring motor 2% which is secured to the bottom of base member 9.
Power is transmitted from the spring niotor Q-l through a driving spindle 25, which is quickly and easily coupled to a coupler 26 secured on the lower end of the rotary, decorated drum or cylinder 2. However, the coupler 26 does not bear. downwardly upon the spindl 25 of the clockwork with any degree of pressure; the entire load of the cylinder 2 being carried by the ball-bearing 7, since any downward pressure of the coupler 26 upon the spindle 25 would tend to stop the chick-work. The coupling connection between the members 25 and 26 is of that nature designed to transmit a rotary movement to the cylinder 2; the couping device permitting free, endwise novcinent either of the cylinder 2 or the driving spindlc in order to effectually protect and cover the mechanism in the lower part of the apparatus, I. attach to the lower side base plate 9 a suitable shell or cover 27, which may be fastened by means of the bolts or other devices M) which unite the sections.
disposed in a plane above theorbit of the shoes 32.
\Vhen the cylinder 2 is rotated, the gov ernor balls 31 are thrown outwardly and the friction of the shoes 32 rubbing on the friction plate33 is sullicient to check the rotary movement of the cylinder under the impulse of its driving motor 24. The friction disk 38 is adjustable, vertically, by means of a set-screw or other equivalent device 34 so that the desiredspeed of rotation of the cylinder 2 may be readily obtained.
After the clock-work or motor 24: has been wound and permitted to run, it will revolve the cylinder through means of the loose coupler 2526, and when a certain speed is attained the governors 31 will come into effect and thereafter control the speed of rotation of the cylinder 2; meanwhile the disk switch 19 is being rotated. by the spring motor Q-l and the circuits of the lamps 14: successively or simultaneously closed when the several brushes 17 rest upon the common conductor 20 of the disk switch 19.
From the foregoing it will be seen that 1 by centrif- .,il-lust;;ated in the present instance inolud- .ing brackets or hangers 35 which may be screwed or bolted, at 36, to the top and bottom members 5 and 9 and the brackets screwed or fastened. to the contiguous sup port by screws 37. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In an advertising sign in C(Jlllblllfixtlltlll, a
cylindrical sign member mounted to rotate on a vertical axis, a motor for driving said cylindrical sign member and located beneath the same, a non-transparent casing sur rounding said motor. a cylindrical gjass casing surrounding said cylindrical mean her, a non-transparent crown above. said glass casing, a loose connection between the lower end of said cylindrical sign member and said motor, a governor on. the upper end of said cylindrical sign memliier to always maintain the said loose connection under tension from the motor, said governor being located within said non-transparent crown, a transparent stationary globe above said crown, stationary lights within said globe, and means operated by said motor for intermittently controlling said lights.
In testimony whereof I have herein set my hand in the presence Oll' two subset is conserved and its value increased by means I i'ng witnesses.
of the illuminated lamps 14, which, as before stated, may be successively or siinultaneously lighted.
The device is particularly effective for advertising barber's establishments, since FLOYD Oi HUTCl-lQlNG-Ft \Vitnesses:
