To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character formed from a single strand of spring wire in such a manner that it may be adapted for packages of diiferent thicknesses and difierent widths.
A further object of the invention is to provide a spring clip which may be applied to packages as a substitute for rubber bands which will not only hold the papers of the package together but will prevent their relative separation by lateral slipping.
Further objects of this invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the device applied to a package of papers. Fig. 2 is a similar elevation taken from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
In the specific embodiment of the invention, as illustrated, in Figs. 1 to 3, the device comprises a single strand of resilient wire which is bent intermediate its ends to produce separate legs 3 and 4 which diverge, as shown, and are bent upon themselves to form angular loops 5 and 6 and spring fingers 7. These spring fingers are curled at their end to prevent abrasion of the papers or other material being held by the clip.
In the application of the device one of the loops is grasped and bent to separate its attached finger from the adjoining leg. This loop is then placed over one edge of the package of papers as shown. The opposite loop is then grasped and bent in a similar manner and the finger hooked over the opposite side of the package, the legs being stretched apart to accomplish this latter operation. The clip may also be applied on one edge of paper only by arranging the fingers and the loops entirely upon one side of the paper with the legs lying upon the opposite side of the paper, or with the fingers arranged upon one side of the paper and the loops and legs upon the opposite side so that the connected portions of the legs project beyond the paper and the board or other support to which it is attached and acts as a lever for raising the loops from the boards so that papers can be inserted beneath the same and clamp beyond the board or file.
The device by reason of the fact that it is constructed from resilient wire permits of the legs 3 and 4 being spread apart to accommodate packages of diiferent widths and at the same time allow the arms 5 and 6 of the said loops to be adjusted to difi'erent thicknesses to accommodate packages from two sheets to a thickness equal to the length of the arms a.b.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A package clip constructed from a single length of resilient wire formed to provide a relatively long main inverted V-shaped member adapted to bear against one face of a package and having spreadable legs, extensions from the terminals of the legs of such member to form with such legs relatively short auxiliary V-shaped members arranged in the same plane with said inverted V- shaped member and adapted to bear against the said face of the package adjacent the opposite side edges thereof, the outer legs of said V-shaped members terminating at a point approximately midway of the length of said inverted V-shaped member and extended to form inwardly disposed angularly related arms, said main and auxiliary members being spreadable outwardly in the plane of the clip and being adapted to bear on one face of the package, said arms being adapted to bear on the opposite face of the package, and the outer legs of said auxiliary members adapted to embrace the side edges of the package to permit said arms to be moved transversely to the plane of the clip to accommodate packa es of varying thickness, said clip being adjustable to any portion lengthwise of the package.
