Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 9, 1914.
-uUatiOn filed November 1, 1912. Serial No. 729,090.
10 an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB MEHKLUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Finger-Rings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ewelry and more particularly to finger rings but may be used in the construction of bracelets as well.
An object of this invention is to provide a finger ring orthe like which contracts so as to assure a perfect fit when properly applied but which is expansible to permit its passage over enlargements such as joints or the like.
A further object of this invention is to provide a jointed ring which automatically contracts after passing an enlargement.
A further object of 'this invention is to provide afinger ring or the like made up of sections, said sections having loose con nections with each other and a resilient means passing through said sections to re turn them into bearing relation with one another when said ring or the like has been properly placed.
F urther objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claim and drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device showing one half in closed position while the other half is shown in extended position, Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a section of the ring or the like showing the links in both closed and extended position, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the sections showing the lug extending therefrom, Fig. 4- is a similar view showing the section turned as to expose the opposite end, Fig; 5 is a view of oneof the springs, and, Fig. t s a transverse sectional view through the ring.
In the constrncticn of finger sings the abiiitv to expand a ring to permitits passag-1,
ver a joint and its contraction when properly placed will be appreciated by many. Not only is it necessary to provide an expansiblering but means are necessary to normally contract the ring when in place. I provide that a ring may be made in a plurality of sections 10 which are provided on their inner faces with ribs 11 which are drilled as at 12 to be hereinafter described. Each of the sections 10 is provided with a. tongue 13 slotted as at 14:, and this tongue is intended to slide between the ribs 11 of the adjacent section.
'A pin 15 passes through an opening 16 in each of the ribs 11, and through the elongated slot 14 of the tongue between'the ribs. As each link is added, the section of the pin 15 traversing the opening 12 is removed in each link except in the last one applied, and, before the application of this lastpin,
springs 17 are inserted in the passages 12 s,
of the several links.
The springs 17 pass through the passages 12 of each section and tend to hold the sev-; eral sections in bearing relation witheachl other and these springs will yield when the ring is desired to be expanded by permitting the several sections to slide thereon. 5 of the drawing shows the spring in. released position in full linesand the dotted lines show the position it assumes when made, up in a ring in its contracted form. After the springs 17 are inserted, the ex; posed slotted tongue is placed between the exposed ribs of the link opposite thereto, where a pin 15 is inserted as usual. This pin remains in perfect condition.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of this invention without departing from the spirit of the invention and I do not restrict myself to the identical form shown which is submitted for illustrative pur oses only and aving thus described my invention,-.';I
claim: An expansible ring comprising/a. Phil-315i ity of sections, each of said sections havin a slotted tongue extending from one en thereof, each of said sections having ribs termed on one side thereof. sald ribs having passages therethrough, said ribs forming a. means for the several sections against disrecess to receive the slotted tongue of an placement. 0 adjacent section, said ribs having a trans- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature verse recess therethrough, a fastening means in presence of two witnesses. 51 in the transverse recesses to engage the JACOB MEI-IRLUST. slotted. tengue of the adjacent section, and Witnesses: springs passing through the passages in said.
