E. PHlLLlPs.
l `Corn Plow. l No. 109,934. v y 'Patented-Dec. s. 1870.l
NPETEIB. MIMUIPMLWMRC.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELWOOD'PHILLIPS, OF GEN'IREVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT |N ooR'N-PLows.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109.934, dated December 6, 1870.
To all r11/wm, t muy concern:
Beit known that I, ELWooD PHILLIPS, of Centreville, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Corn-Blows, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to the construction of a corn-plow that may be so arranged as to plow both sides of a row of corn at the same time; and it consists in pivoting the sheths to the beam in such a manner that they may be inclined so as to increase or diminish the distance between the shovels.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a corn-plow embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the beam with the cross-bar to which the sheths of the rear shovels are attached, also the braces to said cross-bar, and the front or guiding wheel.
The beam A is of iron, and is divided at O, each branch terminating in a pivot, M M2, upon which the sheths B and B are secured. The cross-bar C is secured to the beam A at O, and is further stayed by the braces D D.
E and E are curved sheths, that are pivoted to the cross-bar C and bolted to the sheths B B. The yhandles G G are secured by a link to the 'beam A, and are bolted to the upper ends of the sheths B B.
By means of the handles the shovels may be made to approach or recede from each other, it only being required to bring the handles nearer together in order to separate the shovels. In this instance the beam and handles are curved, so that both sides of the row may be plowed by the use of only one horse, the driver also walking on one side of the row.
A wheel, N, is provided near the forward end of the beam for the purpose of steadying the plow.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A one-horse oultivator having a horizontally-curved beam to admit of the horse and driver walking on the same side of the row of corn, the beam, near its rear end, being bifurcated downward, and on the extremities of which are pivoted the standards ofthe shovels, for the purpose of giving to the latter a lateral motion in the arc of a circle, substantially as set forth.
ELWOOD PHILLIPS.
