Description

W. GOBLZ.
VENTILATOR POR LOCOMOTIVES.
APELIOATION FILED JAN.14, 1914.
Patented May 26, 1914.
WILLIAM GOELZ, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.-
VENTILATGR FOR LOCGMOTIVS.
Application filed January 14, 1914.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that lt, WILLIAM GonLz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ventilators for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in ventilators and more particularly to ventilators for locomotive cabs and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved ventilator which may be adjusted to various positions to admit air into the cab, as desired by the engineer.
A further object of the invention resides in providing depending members on the ventilator covers, with means in connection therewith to retain the covers in various adjusted positions and a still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
ith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the novel features of construct-ion, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through a cab having an adjustable ventilator construction applied to use therein and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a ver tical section as seen on line 2-2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar view as seen on line 3-"5, Fig. l.
ln describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a locomotive cab of the usual or any preferred design, the roof or top portion of which is provided with ventilator openings 2. Slidably mounted on the roof or top of the cab to cover the openings, are the covering plates 3, forming adjustable covering means for said openings and, removably secured to the under face of each Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, @9i-.
serial No. 812,068.
of the plates 0, to depend therefrom, is a plate member li. rlhe lower portions of these depending plate members 4l are slotted, as shown at 5, to form fork-like lower ends thereon, the purpose of which will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth. As shown, a pair of covering plates 3 are provided for a similar number of openings and disposed intermediate of the openings and secured to the topo-r roof of the cab, to depend therefrom, is a guide plate 6. This guide plate is provided with a pair of parallel slots 7 and the depending plates t are so arranged, with respect to one another, and with respect to the slots of said guide plate, as to permit the slot of one plate e to aline with one slot 7 and the slot of the other guide plate to aline with the other slot 7. A pin 8 is disposed through the furcations of each plate member 4.- and, of course, is disposed through the slotted portion 5 thereof, and loosely pivoted on the pin of each plate member, within said slotted portion 5 thereof, is an arm 9. The arms 9 are also loosely disposed through the slots 7 of the depending guide plate 6 and the extreme free ends of the same are bent angularly to form handle members or the like 10. The lower edges of these arms 9 are also notched, as shown at 11, to aord a means for adjustable engagement with the lower edges of the slots 7 in the guide plate 6 to correspondingly adjust the covering plates 3 with respect to the ventilator openings 2. n any position to which said arms may be adjusted, the same will be so held in view of the notches 11, being engaged with the lower edges of the slots 7. In this manner, the air ventilating to the cab may be readily and quickly adjusted according to the desire of the engineer. v From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device, the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that l have provided a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient in use. 1
Vihile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what l claim is l. In a ventilating device of the class described, the combination Wit-h a housing having ventilating openings in the top thereof, and sliding closures for said ventilating openings; of depending plates carried on said closures, an additional depending plate secured to the top of the housing intermediate of the openings, said plate being provided ivith a pair or' slots, and a pair of arms pivotally carried on the iirst mentioned depending plates and guided through the slots of the last mentioned depending plate.
2. ln a ventilating device of the class described, the combination With a housing having ventilating openings in the top thereof, and sliding closures for said openings; ot depending' plates carried on said closures, an additional depending plate carried on the top of the housing intermediate of the ventilating openings therein, said last mentioned plate being provided With a pair of parallel slots, arms pivotally carried on the iirst mentioned depending plates and guided through the slots ot' said last mentioned depending plate, handle meml ers formed on the free ends of said arms, and means formed on said arms adapted for coperation with portions of the last mentioned depending plate to retain said closures in various adjusted positions.
8. ln a Ventilating device of the class described, the combination With a housing having ventilating openings in the top thereof, sliding closures for said openings; depending plates carried on said closures and disposed in planes offset from one another, an additional depending plate carried on the top intermediate the openings therein, said last mentioned plate being provided With a pair oi' parallel slots alining respectively With the first mentioned depending plates, arms pivotally carried on the lower ends of the irst mentioned depending plates and guided through the slots of the last mentioned plate, the loiver edges of the arms being notched and adapted for engagement with the loiver Walls of the slots of the irst mentioned plate to retain the closures in various adjusted positions, and handle members carried on the free ends of said arms.
in testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLAM GOELZ.
