To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Trmnnnus GAHILL, a citizen of the United States and of the city, county, and State of New York, temporarily residing at \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-VVriting Ma chines and other Similar- Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to avoid the possibility of the operator printing letters one on top of another at the end of a line, and consists in the parts, improvements and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
For convenience I shall call my invention an automatic printingpreventing device. This automatic printing-preventing device I shall show as applied to a type-writing machine of the general type illustrated in my pending application No. 735,813, ,filed November 4th, 1899; but when the invention as applied to one type of machine has been made clear, mechanics skilled'in the art will be able easily to apply it to other types of machines.

10 is a type-bar set in the hanger 11 and connected by the pull-down rod or wire 12 with the lever 13, which-is centered at 14 and has pivoted-t0 its other end the movement-reeeiving arm 15, which is controlled by the key to take'movement from-the motor-frame 16, hereinafter described, for the actuating of the type-bar. The movementf-receiving arm 15 lies normally clear of the motor-frame 16, so that said frame can play without giving movement to said arm. But
movement-rec'eiving arm 15 is depressed, it
throws said movement-receiving arm over said frame and at the same time closes the circuit of the magnet which operates said frame, so that said magnet actuates said frame and the type-bar. To this end the key 17 (which is fulcrumed at 18 and held 1n its normal position by a spring 19) acts, when depressed, through the key-extension 20, upon the latch 21, pivoted to the hori- Zontal arm ofthe bell-crank 22; and thus through said latch, bell-crank and the link 23 throws the movement-receiving arm 15 over the motorframe 16. The spring 24 serves to hold the lach 21 normally in engagement withthe ey-extension 20. The bell- cranks 22, 22, are set in slots milled in the hanger-bar 25, upon the rod 26. At the same time that the key thus throws the movement-receiving arm 15 over the motor-. frame 16, 1t gives movement to the circuitclosing frame 27, which in turn gives move 1 ment to the contact-spring 28, bringing sa',
spring into contact with the contact screw 29, thereby closing the circuit of the magnet 30, whose armature 31 is connected by the rod 32 (whose screw-threaded shank enters the armature and is provided with facility for adjustment in the lock-nut 33) with one of the arms of the motor-frame 16. Said vmagnet, becoming energized, gives movement to the frame 16, and thus through the movement-receiving arm 15, lever 13, and pull-down wire 12, to the type-bar 10, throwing the type up toward the printing point so that it prints. At the same time the magnet 30 gives m'ovement through the motor-frame 16 to the link 34 (which is connected. at 35 ,with the motor-frame and at 36 with the releasing-frame) to the releasing-frame 37, which is centered at 38 and serves both to release the latch or jack 21, thereby permitting the circuit-closing frame '27 to-return to its normal position in advance of the release of the key. The circuitclosing frame 27, returning to its normal position, breaks the circuit of the magnet 30 which thereupon loses its magnetism, an
so permits the motor-frame'16 to return to its normal position under the influence of its contractile returning spring 39. At the same time the bell-crank 22, the latch 21 and to their normal positions under the influence of gravity and the returning spring40. The type-bar at the same time, continues its excursion toward the printing point until the 5 type strikes, when the type-bar rebounds and returns to its normal position under the influence of the rebound, gravity and the returning spring 41.
Inserted in the circuit of the magnet 30, along with the battery 42, rheostat 48- and switch 44, is a contact-spring 45 and contact-screw 46, the latter being set in the lug 47 of the bed-plate, but insulated therefrom.

through said magnet back to the negative pole of the battery. The contact-spring 4-5 and the contact-screw 46 form a part of the printing-preventing mechanism as the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
though my invention may, as will appear hereinafter, be carried out without such a contact device.
Traveling with the carriage is a trip piece 48, which is centered at 49 on the rack-frame and held by an expansive spring 50 normally resting against the under side of the head of the screw 51. Just back of the rackrame is another rack 52, which is mounted by means of the bridle-lever 53 (centered at 54) and the arm 55 of the rocks aft 56,

or other suitable insulating material, 60,
which serves, when actuated by the trip 48 in the manner-hereinafter described, to act upon the spring 45 to move the same from its normal position of contact with the con tact-screw 46, thereby opening a gap in the 50 circuit of the magnet 30, so that printing is rendered impossible.
Traveling on the rack 52 is a little casting or carriage 62, which is furnished with a pawl, 63, centered at 64, and held by a tiny 55 expansive spring normally in engagement with the rack 52. There is also attached to the casting or carriage 62 a little fly, 68, which is centered at 66 and held by a tiny contractile spring 67 in the normal posi- 6 tionshown in the drawings. The pawl 63 serves to hold the carriage in Whatever position upon the rack 52 it may be placed, out,
the operator, by catching the fly 68 and the vertical arm of the pawl 63 between the 66 finger and thumb,,can move the carriage 62 to any position desired, so as to cause the printing-preventing action to take place at any part of the line desired. To assist the operator in this, the rack 52 is graduated and marked to indicate in any given posi- 70 tion of the casting 62, the point in the travel of the carriage at which printing will be prevented. The trip 48 serves as the carriage moves down the line to encounter the fly 68, thereby throwing the rack 52 in the direc- 5 tion of the arrow, (Figs. 2 and 4) giving movement to the arm 57 of the rock-shaft, which in turn acts upon the spring 45, breaking the circuit of the magnet 30, so that however much the keys may be operated 30 said magnet cannot act, and no type-bar can print. If, after the printing has been thus prevented, the operator wishes to write other letters, he touches the trip 48, pressing down the forward end, thereby raising the 35 rear end above the fly 68, whereupon the spring 70 attached to the arm 57 of the rock shaft 56 restores the parts to their normal positions, thereby permitting the spring 45 to again come in contact with the screw 46, thus closing the gap in the circuit so that the operator can now continue his printing. When the carriage reaches its extreme downward or left-most position the lug 69 on the rack-frame comes in contact with the piece 48, attached to the rack 52. The rack 52, as before said, is graduated so that the point at which the dog 63 engages the rack 52 corresponds with the number on the front scale at which the printing will be prevented.
It will be observed that my printing-preventing device operates upon a broadly new principle;,to wit: by preventing a magnet or other motor device from acting to give movement to the type-bar. The typebars thus are not locked-each type-bar is 'free to move-but the motor is prevented, as I have said, from actuating them.
The deviceillustrated in the drawings is a. convenient means of carrying out Invinvention, but it is only one of several that I have invented, and many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or' from certain essential combinations and sub-combinations set forth in the statement of claim at the end hereof. Thus, for example, it will be obvious that the means intermediate the carriage and the circuit breaking device may be widely varied without departing from certain essential features of my invent on. Instead of using the circuit-controlling device operated by the travel of the paper-carriage to prevent the magnet 30,01 its equivalent, from acting, by opening a gap in the working circuit, as illustratedin-the drawings, the same effect may be produced by using said circuitcontrolling device to close a circuit of small resistance which is arranged to'serve as 'a shunt to the working circuit, and whiohih t on the end cfthe arm 5?, to swing over. the circuit-closing frame 2". -The position of the rock shaft 56 with its arms and 57- .may obviously be inverted, the shaft being made vertical and the arms to lie horizontal if desired, the lengths of the arms also being altered as required. Also, the independently mounted rack 52 might be dispensed with, and the casting 62 or its equivalent made to travel upon the rack-frame to engage a fly on the arm 55 or its equivalent. Numerous other modifications maybe made without departing from certain essential features of my invention.

Having illustrated my invention as applied to the kind of type-writing machine figured in the drawings, it will be obvious that it may no applied to an, other sort of typewriting machine whatever in which the type-bars-are actuated by electricity. .For in any such device the operating of the magnet or magnets can be prevented in one of the ways above described. Also, my invention is applicable to other forms of motor device. It has been. pointed out by ,me

Thus, for example, I have pointed out how a pneumatic device might be used instead. In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) a traveling paper carriage; (b) an ele-ctromagnet; (c) a contact device in the circuit of said electromagnet normally closing a gap in said circuit; the paper carriage aforesaid controlling said contact device and acting by its normal movement to open a gap in the circuit of the magnet aforesaid, thereby to prevent said magnet from operating.
6. In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) a traveling paper carriage; (b) a motor; (0) means operated by the normal movement of said paper carriage and acting to prevent said motor from'operating; and (a) means whereby the point in the normal travel of said paper carriage at which it acts to prevent the motor aforesaid from operating is regulated.

In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) a traveling paper carriage; (b) a power device; (0) a source wherefrom power is supplied to said power device; ((Z) means operating to prevent the supply of power to said power device; the means last mentioned being operated by the normal movement of said paper carriage; and (0) means whereby the point in the normal travel of the paper carriage at which it acts to prevent the motor aforesaid from operating is regulated 8. In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) a traveling paper carriage; (b) an eleetro1nagnet ,f7(c) means operated by the normal movement ofsaid paper carriage acting to prevent said magnet from operating; and (d) means whereby the point in the normal travel of the paper carriage at which it prevents said magnet from operating is regulated.
9. In combination, in a typewritingma chine (a) a traveling paper carriage; (b) an electromagnet; (a) circuit controlling means for said electromagnet operated by the normal movement of said paper carriage, and serving when thus operated to open a gap in the circuit of said electromagnet; and (all means whereby the point in the normal travel of the paper carriage at which it operates the circuit controlling means aforesaid is regulated.
10. In combination, chine (a) a traveling an electromagnet; (c) a contact device in thecircuit of said elect-romagnet normally closing a gap in said circuit; the paper parthe paper carto prevent said in a typewriting mapaper carriage; (6)

11. In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a travelingpapecarriage; (b) a motor; (a) one or more keys at the keyboard acting when depressed to bring said motor into operation; and (cl) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent said motor from operating.

In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b) a motor; (a) one or more keys at the keyboard acting when depressed to bring said motor into operation; ((Z) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent said motor from operating; and (e) means whereby the point in the travel of the papercarriage at which it acts to prevent the motor aforesaid from operating, is regulated.
13. In combination in a type-writing machine (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b) a motor; (0) one or more keys at the keyboard acting when depressed to bring said motor into operation; ((Z) means for printing operated by said motor; operated by the carriage aforesaid, acting to prevent said motor from printing. 1

In combination in a typewriting machine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b) a motor; (0) one or more keys board acting when depressed to bring said motor into operation; ((5) means for printing operated by said motor; (6) means operated by the carriage aforesaid, acting to prevent said motor from printing; and (f) means whereby the point in the travel of the paper-carriage aforesaid at which it prevents the motor aforesaid from printing, is regulated.

In combination in a type-writing machine, a traveling paper-carriage; (b) an electro-magnet; (0) one or more keys at the key-board serving when depressed to bring said magnet into action; and (cl) means operated by the paper-carriage aforesaid, acting to prevent said magnet from operatin 16. In combination in a type-writing machine, a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b) an electro-magnet; (0) one or more keys at the key-board serving when depressed to bring said magnet into action; and ((Z) a contact device in the circuit of said magnet, normally closing a gap in said circuit; the paper-carriage aforesaid controlling said cqntact device and acting to open a gap in the circuit of the magnet aforesaid, thereby to prevent said magnet from operating.
17. In combination in a type-writing maand (6) means at the key-- chine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b)
1 an electro-magnet; one or more keys at the keyboard serving when; depressed to bring said magnet into action; (d) means operated by the papercarriage aforesaid, acting to prevent said magnet from operating; and ((2) means whereby the point in the travel of said paper-carriage at which it prevents the magnet aforesaid from operating, is regulated.

In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b) an electro-magnet; (a) one or more keys at the key board, serving when depressed to bring said magnet into action; ((Z) a contact device in the circuit of said magnet, normally whereby the point in the travel of said paper-carriage at which it prevents the magnet aforesaid from operating, is regulated.
19. In .combinationin a type-writing machine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b)
an electro-magnet; (0) one or more keys at the key-board, serving'when depressed to bring said magnet into action; (cl) means for printing, operated by said electro-niagnet; and (6) means operated by the papercarriage aforesaid and acting tr; prevent said magnet from prlnting.

' bring said magnet into action; (all) means for printing, operated by said electro-mag net; and (e) a contact device in the circuit of said magnet, normally closing a gap in said circuit; the paper-carriage aforesaid controlling said contact device and acting to open a gap in the circuit of the magnet aforesaid, thereby to prevent said magnet from printing.
21. In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b)
an electro-magnet; (0) one or more keys at the key-board, serving when depressed-to bring said magnet into action; ((1) means for printing, operated by said electro-magnet; (0) means operated by the paper-carriage aforesaid and acting to prevent said magnet from printing; and (f) -means whereby the point in the travel of the papercarriage at which it prevents the magnet aforesaid from printing, is regulated.

In combination in a type-writing-machine, (a) a traveling paper-carriage; (b) an electro-magnetg (0) one or more keys at the vat (c) a contact device in the circuit of said ling said contactdevice and acting to open a gap in the circuit of the'magnet aforesaid, thereby to prevent said magnet from printing; and (f) means whereby the point in the travel of the paper-carriage at which it prevents the magnet aforesaid from printing, is regulated.v

In combination in a. type-writing machine, (c) a type-bar; (b) a motor serving to actuate said type-bar; (0) a key at the key-board and means controlled by said key whereby, when said key is depressed, the motor aforesaid is brought into action to operate the type-bar; (d) a traveling papercarriage; and (6) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent the motor aforesaid from actuating a type-bar.
24. In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a type-bar; (Z2) a motor serving .to actuate said type-bar; (c) a key at the '(f) means whereby the point in the travel of the paper-carriage at which it prevents the motor aforesaid from operating a typebar, is regulated.

In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a type-bar; (b) an electro-magnet serving to actuate said type-bar; (a) a key at the key-board for controlling said magnet; (d) a traveling paperecarriage; and (6) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent the electro-magnet aforesaid from operating.

In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a plurality of type-bars striking to a common printing center; (b) a motor device common to said type-bars for actuating said type-bars, each as required; (0) keys, and means controlled thereby, whereby said motor device is brought into action to operate the different type-bars to which it is common, each type-bar as required; (03') a traveling paper-carriage; and (6) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent the motor device aforesaid from actuating a type-bar.

In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a plurality of type-bars striking to a common printin center; (I? a motor device common to sai type-bars or actuating said type-bars, each as required; (c) keys, and means controlled thereby, whereby said motor device is brought into action to actuate the diflerent type-bars to which it is (d) a traveling paper-carriage; (6) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent the motor device aforesaid from actuating a type-bar; and (f) means whereby the point in the travel of the paper carriage at which it prevents the motor device pfoiesaid from operating a type-bar, is regu- -ate 31. In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a plurality of type-bars striking to a common printing center; (6) an electromagnet common to said type-bars for actuating said type-bars, each as required; (0) keys, and means controlled thereby, wherecircuit; the paper-carriage aforesaid controlling said contact device and acting to open a gap in the circuit of the electro-ma-gnet aforesaid, thereby to prevent said electromagnet from actuating a type-bar.
33. In combination in a type-writing machine, (a) a plurality of type-bars striking to a common printing center; (6) an electromagnet common to said type-bars for actuating said type-bars, each as required; 0)
keys, and means controlled thereby, whereby said electro-magnet is brought into action to operate the difierent type-bars to which it is common, each type-bar as required; (d) a traveling paper-carriage; (6) means operated by said paper-carriage and acting to prevent the electro-magnet'aforesaid from operating; and f) means whereby the point in the travel of the paper-carriage at which it prevents the electro-magnet aforesaid from operating, is regulated.
34. In combination in a type-writingmachine, (a) a plurality of type-bars striking to a common printing center; (b) an electromagnet common to said type-bars for actuating said type-bars, each as required (0) keys, and means controlled thereby, whereby said electro-magnet is brought into action to operate the different type-bars to which it is common, each type-bar as required; (d) a traveling paper-carria e; (0) a contact device in the circuit 0 the electro-magnet aforesaid, normally closing a gap in said circuit; the paper-carriage aforesaid controlling said contact device and acting to .open a gap in the circuit of the electro-magnet aforesaid, thereby to prevent said magnet from actuating a type-bar; and (f) means whereby the point in the travel of the papercarriage at which it prevents the electromagnet aforesaid from operating, is regulated.
35. In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) a motor; (6) a motor controlling device therefor; (a) a traveling paper carriage; and (cl) adjustableconnections between the carriage aforesaid and the motor con-trolling device aforesaid; said connections being operated by the normal movement of the carriage aforesaid and serving when thus operated to prevent the motor aforesaid from operating; whereby the point in the normal movement of the paper carriage at which it prevents the motor aforcsaid from operating may be altered as required.
36. In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) a motor; (6) a motor controlling device therefor; (o) a rack'connected with said motor controlling device; (0?) a member adjustable on ,id rack; and (e) a member traveling with the paper carriage and acting during the normal movement of said crating; whereby the point in the normal movement of the paper carriage aforesaid at which said carriage operates to prevent the electromagnet aforesaid from operating may be regulated.
38. In combination, in a typevvriting machine (a) an electromagnet; a. circuit breaking device therefor; (c) a rack connected with said circuit breaking device; (d) a member adjustable on said rack; and
(c) a member traveling with the paper car-.
riage and acting during the normal movement of said carriage on the member last mentioned to give movement to the rack aforesaid; thereby to operate the circuit controlling device aforesaid in such manner that it prevents the electromagnet aforesaid from operating.

In combination, in a typewritlng machine, (a) a motor for printing; (5) a motor-controlling device therefor; (o) a traveling paper-carriage; and (d) adjustable connections whereby the motor aforesaid "is made to actupon the motor-controlling device aforesaid at the required point in said carriages travel, in'such manner as to preven the motor aforesaid from printing.

In combination, in a typewriting machine, (a) a motor for printing; (6) a mo-- tor-controlling device therefor; (c) a rack connected With said motor-controlling device; (d) a member adjustable on said rack; and (e) a member travelingwith the papercarriage and'acting on the member last men tioned to give movement to the rack aforesaid, thereby to operate the motor-con rolling device aforesaid, in such manner as to prevent the motor-aforesaid from printing.

46. In combination, in a typewriting machine (a) mechanism for printing; (Z a electromagnet for operating said printing mechanism; (0) a traveling paper carriage;
and (d) adjustable connections whereby the carriage aforesaid is made, at the required point in its travel, to prevent the electro. magnet aforesaid from operating the printing mechanism aforesaid.

In combination in a typewriting machine (cz) means for printing; (6) a motor for operating said printing means; {0) a controlling device for said motor; ((Z) a traveling paper carriage; and (6) adjustable connections whereby said carriage is made to act, at therequired point in its travel, upon the motor-controllingdevice aforesaid, to prevent said motor from operating the printing means aforesaid.

The combination in an electrically-' operated typewriting machine including electrically-operated devices for actuating the type bars arranged in a normally open circuit, of means for closing the circuit to cause a. type bar to be actuated, a normally closed circuit breaker arranged in said normally open circuit, and means operated by the movement of the carriage for causing said normally closed circuit breaker to break the circuit.

The combination in an electrically -'4( operated typewriter including an electri= cally-operated device for actuating the type bars arranged in a normally open circuit, of means for closing the circuit to cause a type bar to be actuated, and means operated by the movement of'the carriage-to so break the circuit that the type bars cannot be actuated. i v

The combination with an electricallyoperated typewriter including an electrically-operated device for actuatingthe type bars and an electrical circuit including said device and make and break mechanism located in said circuit, of a longitudinally movable gage bar supported independently of the carriage, means interposed between the same and thecarriage for shifting said bar and means interposed between said bar and said make and'break mechanism for actuating the latter. 6O 54. The combination with an electricallyope ated typewriting' machine including an electrically-operated device for actuating the type bars, an electrical circuit including said device and make and break mechanism located in said circuit; of a longitudinallyoperating the printshiftable gage bar supported independently of the carriage, astop carried by said bar, a device projecting from the carriage of the machine co-acting with said stop, and means interposed between said bar and the make and break mechanism actuated by the former in the longitudinally shifting movement for operating said make and break mechanism.
55. ,In combination, in an automatic printing-preventing action for a power-operated typewriting machine, in which the printing-preventing mechanism operates by cutting off power from the motor mechanism, a longitudinally-movable gage-bar and connections operated by said bar for cutting ofi the power from the printing mechanism.

In a typewriting machine, in whichthe type-bars are operated by a motor device, the combination, with said type-bars and motor device,..of a gage-bar, controlling said motor device; with an adjustable stopgor moving longitudinally upon said gage- 57. In an electrical typewriting machine, in which thetype-bars are actuated by the force of the socalled electrical current, the combination, with the type-bar operating electro-inagnet, of a gage-bar, controlling saidelectro-magnet, and an adjustable stop 01 moving longitudinally upon said gagear. 1 Y 58. In a typewriting machine, having means for printing, and a motor for operat- 105 ing said printing means,.the combination with said printing means hfan electricallyoperated motor, for actuating said printing means, and the combination with said motor of a circuit-controlling gage-bar, acting 110 upon a circuit of the motor mechanism aforesaid, so as to control the action of said motor, and anadjusta-ble stop for moving longitudinally on said gage-bar.
