Description
A. C. BATES. I
WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 16, 1910.
Patented Mayl9, 1914;
INVEN TOR A T TORNE Y Y ARTHUR C. BATES, OF BRONNSVILLE, CALIFORNIA.
VJRENCH.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. Barns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownsville, in the county of Yuba and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
The object of my invention is to provide a device which may be used for the purposes hereinafter mentioned, which is positive in its action and may be quickly and easily attached, shifted in position and removed, and a further object is to provide an instrument which may be used as a pipewrench, or similar tool, which combines lightness with great range of action for structural work and particularly for underground mine, timbering and general iron pipe fitting.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, described in the following specification and claimed in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawin Figure 1 is a side view of the said device, engaging a pipe for turning. Fig. 2 is a bottom longitudinal view of the device.
In the figures, 2 represents the handle of the device which has a head or hearing provided with a tooth 8 adapted for engagement with the links 6 of the chain 7 The head is fulcrumed eccentrically within the double link 3 and is provided with a shoulder 9, the purposes of which are to strengthen the tooth, to cause the chain to conform tightly to the material or article as held by the instrument, also automatically to permit the chain to be loosened without detaching it from the tooth so that the position of the device may be changed while the object is held or engaged and also to aid in the taking up of the slack in the chain as may exist. The pin 4 at one end of the double link 3, the members thereof running parallel to each other, secures the same to the head of said handle and at the other end to the swivel 5 of the chain, but so as to permit the turning of said link.
The links of the chain are provided with teeth on the inner edges of the same as shown at 11, said links being arranged as shown in Fig. 2. The double link 3 is also provided with teeth 10 on the inner edges of its members.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. November 16, 1910.
Patented May 19, T3914. Serial No. 592,669.
To operate the device pass the free end of the chain around the material to be held or turned, which may be either circular or angular, through the space between the double link 3 and thence along the top of the handle as shown in Fig. 1, the tooth 8 being permitted to enter the appropriate space between the link members in position therewith. The tooth 8 is concave on one face thereof to conform to the rounded end of bar 7 of connecting links 6 as shown. By grasping the end of handle 2 and pulling the tooth 8 from the material engaged any slack in the chain is taken up, the shoulder 9 on turning the handle increasing the pressure thereof on the chain against the material, and the binding pressure against the material being increased so as to decrease the strain on the tooth 8. It is apparent that the harder one pulls onthe handle 2 so that the chain is tightened around the pipe, column, post, timber or other object, the greater the grip and that the moment the pressure on the handle is relieved the chain slackens so that the position of the chain may be changed on the material instantly, thus allowing the operator to twist or hold the material from any direction about it without detaching the chain from the tooth 8. Also by my combination of parts the thinnest wire may be held and the capacity of the device is limited only by the length of chain and strength of the instrument. 7
Great power is attained by my special construction of link designated 3 as applied to any object to be acted upon therewith, the same acting as a chain or head block, and I do not require any special part to take up slack, the hook 8 in the operation not only drawing the chain but taking up slack to the full extent required. Also, the shoulder 9 by being pressed against the chain at lowest point of contact as shown in Fig. 1 gives a special friction leverage, the said link and shoulder together efiecting a compound leverage. Besides as shown in Fig. 1 the construction of my device permits the formation of an angular recess between an object such as the pipe B, and the link 3 and chain 6,
whereby the chain is permitted to slip around the material to be acted upon with ease in the adjustment of the device, constituting the arrangement an easily adjustable jaw, and preventing buckling, twisting or other undesirable positions of the chain-in the adjustment which might otherwise re sult, while at said place great power is at tainable in the contact.
In the foregoing specification I have described the preferred form of my invention for securing the best results, but it is apparent that the same may be modified Within the scope of the appended claim, as for example the teeth shown may be omitted or the shape of the tooth 8 may be changed or a plurality of them constructed. I
It will be seen that the double link 3 constitutes what I have termed in the claim a head block with an opening through which the relatively free end of the chain may be easily passed, and it will be noted particularly that the pivot point of the handle lies nearer the base of the hook 8 than the eX- treine edge of the lateral enlargement which constitutes the shoulder 9. By this construction, the said shoulder is adapted, in the operation of the device, with the chain passed through the opening in the head block and the hook 8 engaged with the chain, to bear directly against the chain to contract the same about the work between the point of connection of the head block and chain and the point of contact between the shoulder and the chain.
I claim:
A tool of the character described, coinprising a chain, a headblock pivotally connected at one end to one end of said chain and formed with an opening through which the other end of the chain is insertible, and a handle pivotally connected at one end to the other end of the head block and formed at its pivot end with a hook receivable in said opening and engageable with said chain, said end of the handle being enlarged laterally from the pivot in a direction opposite to the hook and the pivot lying nearer the base of the hook than the extreme edge of the said enlargement, whereby the latter forms an eccentrically disposed shoulder adapted, in the operation of the device with the chain passed through the opening in the head-block and the hook engaged with the chain, to bear directly against the chain to contract the same about the work between the point of connection of the head-block and chain and the point of contact between the shoulder and the chain, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
