MOTOR-CYCLE HAND-GRIP. j
able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,vreference being had to the accompanying draw- Tings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to handlegrips for motor-cycles of the type commonly used; in which a portion of the grip telescopes over the endof the metal'handle-bar of the motor-cycle and the remainder, approxi-v mately one-half of the length of the grip, extends beyond the end of the metal handlebar, This type of handgrip has been .de:
veloped to minimize the efiect of the great vibration upon .the hands of the rider, caused by the weight of the machine and high speed at which motor-cycles are ordinarily operated. These hand-grips have, however, been subjected to frequent breakage at the point where toe metal handle-bar of the motorcycle ends, and the object of my invention is to overc'omethis breakage, had yet make the hand-grip suiiiciently flexible to be satisfactory in operation. To accomplish this result I place in the hand-grip a reinforcing n'iaterial, )ret'erably of metal, which overlaps the point where the metal handle-bar ends for a short distance in each direction therefrom; thereby so strengthening the grip that breakage at that point is practically eliminated;. while the flexibility of the part of the grip extending beyond the end of the metal handle-bar is not so materially deoreasec by said reinforce as to materially reduce its eiiiciency. v
The features of my invention are hereinafter set forth and explained, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a view in elevation of my improved hand-grip, and a section of the handle-bar upon which it is mounted. Fig.
2-, is a view showing a longitudinal section of one form of construction oi? my improved hand-grip with the handle-bar in levation, Fig. 3, is a view in elevation of i:-' name, with a portion of the hand-grip broken clear, and exact de-- scription of the inventiomsuch as will en- Specification of Letters Patent. I I P te t d 12 19 14 A pliestion filed August 14. 1913.v
te ial thoreiin ljig. at, is a view showing a longitui'linal section of another form-of constructionofmy'improved hand-grip, and a section of the handle-bar upon which it is mounted. Figs; 5,': 1 nd 6, show sections of my improved hand grip with parts broken away, showing different forms of reinforcing material used therein.
In these drawings illustrating 1'ny i'nvention, Figs grip as made ofvulcanized rubber, with a sleeve port-ion A,'*telescoping over the 'end of a handle-bar B, and with a grip-portion C, of approximately one ha'lf of the'entire structure, extending outward behand-grip All, I place a reinforcingmate rial D, preferably metal, which is vulcanized way fron the end was illustrated in Fig. 3; of longitudinal strips, D as illustrated in F ig. 5; or of a perforated metal tube D as illustrated in Fig.0. I, however, prefer the form D, of woven metal strips, although I dohot limit myself to the use of a reinforce, of any particular material or of any particular fOI'IIL- In the manufacture of my improved handgrip, I have found-it desirable to construct it of 'lay'er's of rubber coatediand permeated clothor canvas E, and rubber F, with the reinforce 'l), inserted at any convenient point thea'ein, the whole being iioimed up be vulcanized, and in which the structure forming the hand-grip is finally completed byfiulca'nization 'inthe usual manner in whiehrubber goods are made.
It is obvious from the foregoing, that in the construction of my improved-hand-grip, that I can make the body of the hand-grip either of rubber alone, with, the reinforcing into the completed structure, or Icanb'uild away showing; one form of rein forcing ma yond the end of the handle bar lhin the usualnianner. In the central portion of this metal and in any convenient shape; for example, of spirally woven metal strips D;
to fit the mold in which the hand-grip is to l and, 2, I have shown the handthe length of into the body of the hand-grip so as-to exmaterial D, en'ibeddedtherein, before vul I canization, and the wholethen vulcanized up the body of the hand-grip of layers of rubber l and rubber permeated and coated cloth or canvas E, in the usual manner of nmkmg rubber goods, with the reiniorcing imiteriul D, inserted therein at such point 5 as nuty be deslred, and the whole then Yulbut grip.
lzlnving thus described. my invention so as to enable others skilled in the art to which it nppcrtuins, to construct and utilize the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Potent is:---
1. In it bend-grip for motor cycle handlebar. the combination of u sleeve portion adapted to be placed upon a handle-bur, u. bend-grip portion extending longitudinally from the end of said sleeve portion beyond the end of the handle-bur, a longitiulinully non-clu lic reinforce embedded in the wall of said sleeve and hand-grip portions, substuntially as and for the purpose set forth.
in u hand-gripior motor-cycle handlebar, the combination of a sleeve portion adapted to be placed upon a handle-bur, hand-grip portion extending longitudinuliy from the end of suidsleere portion beyond the end of the lumdle-l'iur, u reinforce com-- posed of longitudinally non-elustic inclined elements and in spaced relation to each other embedded in the wall ofsaid sleeve and hand-grip portions, substantially as set forth. 4 In a handgrip for motor cycle handle her, the combination of a sleeve portion adopted to he placed upon 2:. bundle-bur, a hand-grip portion extending longitudinally from the end of mild eleeve beyond the end of the bundle-bur, a reinforce composed of long ili'uliunlly 1l0ll-0lil tltl elements enili(ll(l(ll in the well of said sleeve and hundgrip portions in opposite inclinations and in spaced relation relative to ouch other, subsluntiully us and for the purpose set forth.
