To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, OALvrs RAY and ELI S. McCAULLnY, citizens of the United States, residing at l ama, in the county of Tania and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Governors for Spring-Motors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
, This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spring motors and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be readily used for supplying power to machines of a light character, such as sewing machines, churns, washing machines and the like.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is constructed of few and simple parts and which will give a maximum amount of power, and a still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section through a device constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section therethrough as seen on line H, Fig. 1, disclosing more clearly the.

In describing our invention, we shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughoutthe several views and in which 1 indicates a housing or casing of any desired size and shape necessary to contain the parts to be hereinafter mentioned, in the front and rear walls of which is rotatably mounted a drive shaft This drive shaft is sup ported, intermediate the front and rear walls of the housing 1 in a partition wall or the like 3 and wound on said shaft 2, is

a spring 4, the one end of which is engaged with the partition wall and the other wit-h said shaft. Also carried on this shaft 2 is an enlarged gear wheel 5. Rotatably mounted in the front and rear walls of the housing 1 above the shaft 2, is an additional shaft 6, which carries thereon an enlarged gear 7, and a smaller pinion 8, the latter meshing with the teeth of the enlarged gear 5, just mentioned. An additional shaft 9 is also rotatably mounted in the front and rear walls of said housing 1, to one side of the enlarged gear 7 and carries thereon, a gear 10 which meshes with said gear 7 so that when the latter is rotated, said shaft 9 willbe rotated. This shaft 9 projects be yond the-front wall of the casing land has a belt pulley 11 mounted thereon which is adapted to connect, through the medium of a belt, to any desired mechanism, (not shown.) The first mentioned shaft 2 has one end thereof projected beyond the front wall of the housing 1 and a crank or handle member 12 is connected therewith, whereby said spring 1 may be wound on the shaft 2 to permit the latter to be automatically rotated when the crank is released. It is obvious, that after said spring 4 has been properly wound on the shaft 2, the belt pulley 11 will be caused to rotate through the intermediate means, just described and considerable power will be derived therefrom. e have provided an improved regulating means for this device and to this end, we provide a supporting frame 12' which is secured to the inner face of the front wall of said housing 1. Rotatably mounted in said frame 12 and extending upwardly thereof, in a central shaft 13 which forms the axis of the governor, the same having mounted thereon a bevel gear 1 1 which meshes with the bevel gear teeth 7 formed on the side face of the gear 7 A. head piece 15, secured to the upper end of said shaft 13. has hingedly secured thereto the inner ends of the weighted arms 16 of the governor and a collar 17 slidably mounted on said shaft 13 has connection with these arms 16 by means of the pivoted links or connections 18. This mechanism is of the usual governor type and the lower collar 17 is provided with a disk 19 on its under face which is of considerably larger size than said collar. Also secured on the frame 12 is aleaf spring 26. which is bent and has the free end thereof projected over the upper face of said disk 19. This spring member 20 is adapted to be forced downwardly.into frictional engagement with the upper face of said disk 19 to regulate the speed of the governor and parts connected therewith and to this end, said disk 19 may be considered a brake disk. In order to force the spring member 20 downwardly into engagement with said disk 19, a bearing 21 is provided, in which is slidably mounted a rod or arm 22, the inner end of which is provided with a head member 23. The one face of said head member is beveled, as shown at 24 and adapted to be forced into engagement with the offset portion of said spring 20 to force the same dow nwardly, when said arm or rod 22 is forced inwardly. This rod or arm 22 projects through a slot in the front wall of the housing or casing 1 and the outer free end thereof is provided with an operating head or finger piece 25. It is obvious, from this construction, that when said rod 22 is forced inwardly, the same will force the spring 20 downwardly and into engagement with the face of the disk 19. Through this medium, the rate of speed with which the governor is being rotated, may be regulated and thus the speed of the complete device regulated thereby.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a. simple inexpensive and efiicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention and while we have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed is In a governor, the combination with a support and a rotatable disk adapted to move vertically with respect to said support; of a block secured on said support adjacent the rotatable disk, a leaf spring member mounted on said block having the outer portion thereof bent upwardly to project over said disk, a pin extending vertically through the block and support to cure said spring in position, the upper end of said pin being provided with a bearing having a horizontal bore, a rod slidably mounted in the aforesaid bearing, and a wedge member carried on one end of said sliding rod adapted for engagement with the upwardly bent portion of the spring to force the latter downwardly into frictional engagement with the rotatable disk.
