OIL TIME-SWITGH.

ANDER'snN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Boston, county ofSufi'olk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an 1m rovement in Oil Time; Switches, of whicthe following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts. i
Thisinvention relates to a time switch or circuit controlling apparatus of the class shown and described in U.' S. Patent No. 779,249 granted to me January 3, 1905, and has for its object to improve the construction of the same and more particularly the circuit controlling portion thereof, whereby the time switch is especially adapted among 'other'uses for controlling the circuits of highpotential currents. V The invention further has for its ob ect to provide. a novel construction of apparatus as'will be described, whereby the time oper- 'ated switch may be located in a well containing oil or other fluid and which is attached to the time switch .apparatus so as fto formpart thereof whereby an oil time switch may be'supplied to the trade as a single compact structure.
'These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation with the oil well in section of a time switch embodying this invention. Fig. 2, a likeview with the door of the box containing the time movement removed. The clock mechanism, the selective mechanism and the motor mechanism are and may be substantially the same as shown and described in thepatent referred to, except as to details as will be hereinafter described.

The disk 12 has eccentrically connected with it at 16, one end of a connectingrod 17 preferably made as herein-represented and comprising metal end pieces and an intermediate piece of insulating material, such as hard rubber,
which is secured to the metal end pieces by screws 19, 20.
The detent lever 15 is provided at its opposite ends with two detents or arms 21, 22, with which cooperates a finger 23 on an escape lever 21 pivoted to the wall 10 and having a second finger or projection 26 with which cooperate tripping dogs 27, which are connected with the hands f of the se-- lective device and are rotated with the toothed wheel or disk (Z, so that at predetermined times, the tripping dogs will be moved into engagement with the finger 26 and turn the escape lever on its pivot, so as to. disengage the finger 23from the detent arm 21. and permit the motor 10 to rotate the disk 12 until a finger 30 on the detent arm 22 (see Fig. 6) is brought into engagement .with the'finger 23 on'the escape lever, for a purpose as will be described. The disk 12 is thus held fronrrotating under the influence of the motor, until the tripping dog 27 passes out of engagement with the finger 26 and permits a spring 31 to turn the escape lever, so as tomove the finger 23 toward the disk '12 and into line with a recessor arch 310 in the detent arm 22. thereby allowing the motor 10 to move the disk 12 so as to complete a half revolution. or until the detent arm 21 on the other end of the lever 15 is brought into en agement with the fini P: t

and for this purpose I employ a crank on a rock shaft 36, which is extended through the partition wall 10 to the front of the box or case a and is provided with a finger piece or arm 37, see Fig. 2, by which the operator can rock said shaft so as to engage the crank 35 with 'a lug 88. on the escape lever and cause said crank to turn the escape lever so as to disengage the finger 23 from the detent arm 21, after which the operator releases the finger piece, and the T 42for the reception of screws or bolts by which the apparatus maybe secured to a suitable upright support, (not shown).
The motor mechanism within the box or case a is connected with the movable member of a circuit controller located below the base plate. 4O, by the connecting rod 17, which is extended through suitable c0- inciding slots.42, 43 in the bottom of the box or case a and in the base plate (see dotted lines, Fig. 3) The movable member re ferred to, may be made as herein shown and consists of a pair of laminated spring brushes 44, which are secured as by screws 45 (see Fig. 4) to the underside of a carrier, shown as a bar or piece 46 of hard rubber or other insulating material, which-Eis bodily movable on guide rods 47 depending from a block 48 of insulating material, which is screwed or otherwise fastened to the under-.
side of the base plate 40.. The block 48 has a hole through it for the passage of the connecting link 17. The contact members 44 are located near the opposite ends of the carrier 46 and cooperate with fixed contact members or terminal metal blocks or pieces 49, which are screwed or otherwise secured to a plate or slab 50 of slate or other suitable insulating material, which is suspended from the base plate 40 by corner belts or rods 51 provided with sleeves or coverings 520 of insulating material. 1
The carrier 46 for the movable contacts is connected with a rocking device or lever 52 mounted to turn on a pivot pin or shaft 53 supported by a metaldrame or casting comprising a horizontal portion 55 (see Figs 4, 8 and 9), from one end of which are extended studs or posts 56, which are suitably fastened to the block 48 of insulating material, and from the other end of which extend lugs 57 (see Fig. 2) through'which the pivot pin 53 is passed, and which are sepa; rated sutliciently to receive the rocking device or lever 52. The lugs 57 have extended from them cars 58 through which pass the and having attached toit a cross bar forming a counter-weight for the movable member of the switch. The arm 61 is made narrower than the slot 64 and is preferably made rounding or curved on its upper and lower surfaces so as to conform to the curved end walls of the said slot. The arm 62 is provided with a projection 66, which cooperates with a projection 67 on the frame (see Figs. 1, 8 and 9), so as to form a stop for the switch in its closing movement.
Provision is made for interposing barriers of insulating material between the pairs of contacts, and for this purpose, a block or piece 70 of hard rubber or other insulating material is erected upon the slab or plate 50 between the pairs of stationary terminals or contacts 49 and is of a length substantially equal to the distance between the terminals of each pair of terminals. The movable carrier 46 has secured to its under side cross bars or pieces 72 of insulating material, arranged so as to be interposed between the insulating barrier 70 and'the movable contact members 44. The block 70 and the bars or pieces 72 are made of a height substantially equal to the distance between the plate 50 and the carrier 46 in the closed position of the switch (see Fig. 2).
The switch mechanism is designed to be inclosed in a well or box 7 5, which contains oil or other fluid medium 76 for reducing thedanger of opening and closing a switch in a circuit whose current is of high poten; tial 0r tension, said box orwcllbeing open at its top and secured to the base plate 40 by means of rods 77 extended through the sides of the well and through lugs or ears 7% depending from the base plate 40, said rods being provided at their ends with retaining devices or nuts 7 9.
The stationary contacts or terminal members 49- are arranged in pairs as herein shown, and are adapted to be connected by the main contact brushes and also by auxiliary contact members, shown as substantially T-shaped conducting pieces 80, which are vertically movable in guides 81 connected together by a metal bar 82 fastened to the carrier 46, said bars being interposed between said carrier and the main contact members or brushes 44. The auxiliary contact mcmbers are adapted to engage the stationary contact members or tern'iinal pieces 49and are yieldingly engaged therewith by the springs 84 attached to the carrier46.
The stationary terminals it) have secured to them-metal rods or bars 85,- which are extended up through the base plate 40 and into hollow insulators 86, extended aboveand below the base plate and firmly secured thereto by clamping bars 87, which are pic. vided at their ends with holes or openings to permitsaid bars to he slipped over the ortion of the hollow insulators above said liase plate, after which said clamping bars are fastened as by screws 90 (see Fig. 4) to the upper side of said base,plate. The metal rods 85 below the hollow insulators are pref? erably provided with a covering or sleeve 91 of insulating material. The terminal rods 85 extended up into the hollow, insulators have connected with them in any suitable manner insulated conductors 92.
In the present instance, the switch is shown as a double pole double break switch, and in opeartion the switch is opened and closed at predeterminedintervals, selected by moving thc hands or levers into engagement with the slots 6 in the toothed disk (lcorresponding to the times at. which it is desired to open and close the switch.
The 'motor 9 is released as above described, and first rotates the disk 12 sufliciently to engage the finger 23 with thedetent arm 22, and thus enable the final release of the motor to take place when the edge of the tripping dog 27 passes the edge of the escape finger '26.

At the selected time, the motor 9 is released and the disk 12 rotated'in the direction of the arrow 94, Fig. 3, until the detent arm 22 engages the finger 23 of the. escape lever 15, after which the motor is fully released and moves the connecting, rod 17 down until the disk 12 has made a half turn, at which time the movable contacts 4A, 80 are engaged with the stationary contacts or terminals 10 and the switch is closed as represented in Fig. 2.
hen the crank or arm 01 is depressed as described, the counterweighted arm 62 elevated, and the toggle formed by the crank or arm and link (33, is straightened. The switch remains closed until the motor is again released by theselective device, whereupon the connecting rod 17 is moved upward into the position shown in Fig. 3, and on its upward movement said rod lifts the crank or arm 61 and rocks the lever or device 52 so as to move the toggle 60, 63- into its inclined position shown in Fig. 4 and so as to lower. the counterweight 65, which balances or substantially balances the weight of jumping of the arc' from one switch or side of the switch to the other is effectively prevented by the arc interrupting walls or bar-' riers 70, 72.
The box or case (1. containing the time mechanism is provided with a door 100 hinged thereto, and on its rear side, said box is provided with a removable plate 101 (see Fig. 1). Provision is made for etl'ecting a Water and dust-tight oint between said door and plate and the boxor case. To this end, strips 102 of rubber are interposed between the back plate 101 and the walls of the opening in the back of the box or case, and strips 102 of rubber arc fitted into channels or grooves at the top, bottom and sides of the door 100 on the inner side of the latter, and said strips cooperate with an edge 103 on the top, bottom and side walls of the box or case a at the front thereof. The packing strips 102 are forced into air and dust-tight engagement with the edges 103- by slide bars 105 movable in a guideway formed by a plate or piece 107 (see Fig. 5) secured to a cross rib or-raised portion 108 on the inner side of the. door 100, said slide bars being connected by links 109 to diametrically opposite studs 110 on a disk 112 rotatable in a socket in the cross piece 108 and actuated by a handle 113 on the outside of the door. The front ends of the slide'bars 105 are beveled (see Fig. 5) and cooperate with lugs 114 (see Fig. 2) 011 the inner surface'of the side walls of the box or-case (I, so as to force the edges 103 into the rubber packing strips 102.
Claims:
1. In combination, a circuit controller provided with a movable member, a rocking device provided with an arm, a link pivoted at one end to said arm and at its other end to said movable member to form a toggle between the-latter and said rocking device, a second arm on said rocking device, a counterweight for said movable member connected with said second arm, a third arm on said rocking device, and means cooperating with said third crank or arm for rocking said device to straighten the toggle and operate said movable member, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a circuit controller comprising a plurality of pairs of fixed members, and a plurality of movable members cooperating therewith, a carrier for said movable memoers, a stationary are interrupting wall interposed between said stationary niembers, 'mo-vable are interrupting walls attached to said carrier between said movable members and arranged with relation to said statlonary wall to be interposed between said 'walband the fixed contact members in the closed position of'said cirmembers and arranged with relation to said.
stationary wall to be interposed between said wall and the fixed-contact members in the closed position of said circuit controller, a rocking device means to connect said carrier with said rocking device, and means to operate said rocking device, substantially as de scribed.
4. In combination, a circuit controller comprising a'plurality of pairs of fixed members, and a plurality of movable members coijperating therewith, a carrier for said movable members, a stationary arcinterrupting wallinterposed between said stationary members, movable arc-interrupting walls attached to said carrier between said movable members and arranged with relation to said stationary wall to besinterposed between said wall and the fixed contact members in the closed position of said circuit controller, a rocking device, means to connect said carrier with said rocking dcvice, and means cooperating with said rocking device to move the same in opposite directions, substantially as described.
5. In combination, a circuit controller comprising a plurality of pairs of fixed members, and a plurality of movable members cooperating therewith, a carrier for said movable members, a stationary arcinterrupting wall interposed between said stationary members, mo 'able arc-interrupting walls attached to said carrier between saidmovable members and arranged with relation to said stationary wall to be interposed between said wall and the fixed contact members in the osed position of said circuit controller, a ever provided with a plurality of arms, means to connect one of said arms with said carrier, :1 counterweight attached to another of said arms, and means cooperating with a third arm to turn the lever in opposite directions, substantially as described.
G. In combination, a circuit controller comprising a fixed member and a movable member, a rocking device provided with a plurality of arms extended, in different directions, a link pivoted at its upper end to one ace-ass;
of saidarms and at its lower end with the said movable member toform a toggle, a weight located on the opposite side of the pivot of said rocking device and connected with a second arm thereof,a link provided. with a slot into which the-third arm of said rocking device is extended, and means for reciprocating said link to rockthe said device and effect movement of said movable member in opposite directions, substantially as described.
7. In combination, a circuit controller comprising a fixed member and amovable member, a rocking device provided with a plurality ofarms extended in diiferent directions, a link pivoted at one end to one of said arms and at its other end with the said movable rocking device and connected with a second arm thereof, and means for rocking. said device operatively connected with the third arm thereof, substantially as described.
8. In combination, a supporting frame, a circuit controller located below said supporting frame and provided with a movable member, an oil well suspended from said supporting frame and inclosing said 'movable member, a motor for said circuit controller located above said supporting frame, a box or case supported by said frame above the same and inclosing said motor, a link pivotally connected at its upper end with the motor within said case and extended through and bclow said supporting frame into said oil well and provided at its lower end with a slot, and a rocking device located below said supporting frame and operatively connected with the said movable member and provided with' anarm extended into said slot, substantially as described.
9. In combination, a supporting frame, a circuit controller located below said supporting frame andprovided with a movable member, an oil well suspended from said supporting frame and inclosing said movable member, a motor for said circuit controller located above said supporting frame, a link pivotally connected at its upper end with said motor and extended through and below said supporting frame and into said oil well, and a rocking device located below said supporting frame and operatively connected with said movable member and with said link, substantially as described.
