ARTICLE OF FURNITURE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JEAN Borsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at East lVeymouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, 11 ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Furniture, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in articles of furniture and more particularly to a cabinet and stand therefor.

The object of the invention is the provision of a new and novel supporting stand which may be used for display purposes but is particularly adapted for supporting a novel form of cabinet or case which may be used for various purposes.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

lVith the above and other obj ects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an article of furniture constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a novel stand which comprises four upright supporting legs 1 arranged in spaced relation and suitably connected adjacent their upper and lower ends by means of the cross pieces 2 and 3. The cross pieces 2 and 3 are connected to the posts upon the inner faces thereof, the ends of the cross pieces abutting against the faces of the supporting legs 1 and are securely held in position in any suitable manner. Arranged between each of the supporting legs and suspended from the cross pieces 3 are the vertically disposed bars at to the lower ends of which are secured the transverse members 5, said members 5 being arranged transversely between the upright supporting legs 1 and the ends spaced from said legs, as clearly illustrated in the figures. lVhen the device is used as a supporting stand, this construction is merely used for ornamentation but when it is de- Speeification of Letters Patent.

If it is desired to use the device as an ornamentation a plurality of knobs 8 are provided and are removably mounted upon various members of the frame or stand, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings. It

will be understood that any arrangement of these knobs may be used but it is preferred #to have them arranged, as illustrated in the drawings.

The supporting legs 1 are provided at their upper inner corners with the recesses 9 which form suitable shoulders 10 upon which are adapted to rest the corners of the cabinet or case 11.

The cabinet, as illustrated, is preferably rectangular in form and constructed of wood, metal or any other desirable material. It is preferred, however, to form the corners 12 of angular metal strips, as shown, and the side walls 13 are to be of any transparent material, but, as shown in the accompanying drawings, glass is preferred. The upper ends of the corners 12 are suitably connected by means of the transverse members 14 and to the longitudinal members 15 which are preferably formed of wood, metal being used if so desired. Hingedly secured at one side of the frame of the cabinet 11 is a cover 16, which consists of the frame 17 and a central panel 18 which in the present instance, 'is illustrated as formed of glass, any other material being used, if desired. The upper rectangular frame of the cabinet 11 is provided with a spring bolt which is preferably mounted within one of the longitudinal members 15 and is adapted for engagement with the perforated tongue 19 carried by one of the longitudinal edges of the cover 16.

Metal brace members 20 are provided which are formed in sections and hingedly connected, so that when the cover is in its closed position, the sections will readily fold together and when the cover is in its raised position, the section will readily unfold to support the same in its raised position.

Arranged within the cabinet 11 is a shelf 21., the corners upon one of the longitudinal edges thereof are arranged Within the corners at one end of the cabinet and are suitably supported in any suitable manner. Extending upwardly from the opposite edge of the shelf is a guard member 22 whereby the articles upon the shelf will be prevented from falling off the edge thereof.

From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that my improved supporting stand or rack may be readily used for a display rack or as a supporting stand for any form of cabinet. It will also be apparent that my improved cabinetwhich is removably mounted upon the upper ends or the supporting legs on the stand may be used for various purposes such as cabinet or case for cigars, tobacco and the like or may be used for containing sewing material or for any other desired use to which the same may be put. It is also apparent that the device as a whole is extremely simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.

While I iave shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will he o'vious that various changes in the details ,ese

of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is 1. A device of the character described including spaced upright supporting legs, cross pieces connecting said legs adjacent their ends, downwardly projecting members suspended from certain of said cross pieces, transverse bars secured to the lower ends of said members and having their ends spaced from the supporting legs, upwardly projecting members mounted upon certain of said cross pieces and having transverse blocks mounted upon the upper ends thereof, said blocks having their ends spaced from the upright supporting legs, as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A device of the character described ineluding spaced upright supporting legs, cross pieces connecting said legs adjacent their ends, and opposed T-shaped members carried by said cross pieces, and and for the purpose set forth.
