RESTRAINING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all echo/n, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KAoHnL- MEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Restraining Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention comprehends improvements in rest-raining devices, and relates more particularly to those of that type, which are especially designed for restrain ing horses and cattle in such a manner that they may be instantly released in case of an emergency.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an extremely simple, practical, and reliable restraining device of this nature, so constructed that it may be operated simultaneously with a number of other similar devices, or so that it may be operated independently of the other devices.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a restraining device, including a hollow body, having a recess formed in its forward face, through which a locking pin works, a push pin vertically movable within the body for raising and lowering the locking pin, and means whereby a number of push pins, forming portions of diiferent devices, may be simultaneously raised when it is desired to release a number of animals at once.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features and construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved restraining device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the lock operating means, Fig. 3 is asection taken on a plane of line 83 of 1, Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on a plane of line 4c-k of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the locking pin, push pin, and connecting plate.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 6 designates'generally a body of the restraining device, which is preferably cast in one piece, and which is formed with the attaching flanges 7 extending laterally from adjacent its rear face 8. Screws 9, or other suitable fasteners, extend through the flanges 7 and secure the body to any suitable support 10. The body is formed with a chamber or pocket 11, which opens upon the lower side thereof, and is also formed with the transverse slots or openings 12 and 13. The slot 12 is in communication with the chamber 11. The body has formed in its forward face 14 a pocket or recess 15 through which a vertical movable locking pin 16, works. The pin slides through the circular openings 17 and 17 and is secured at its upper end to a connecting plate 18 which, when in its lower position, seats within a recess 19 formed in the top of the body. A push rod 20 is secured at its upper end to the connecting plate 18 and extends downwardly through the slot 13 and recess or chamber 11. A collar or sleeve 21 is positioned partly within the slot 13 and serves as a guide for the push rod. A button 22 is secured to the lower end of the rod 20 so that said rod may be easily lifted by an upward push against the button.
lVhen it is desired to secure an animal to the restraining device, the push rod 20 is forced upwardly, so as to raise the lower end of the locking pin 16 above the bottom of the recess or pocket 15. A link 23 attached to the halter chain 24, is then placed within the recess 15, and the locking pin allowed to drop so as to pass through this link. It will be understood that any kind of a rope or chain may be connected to the pin 15.
In order that a plurality of restraining devices may be simultaneously actuated, so as to release a number of animals at the same time, I provide an actuating rod 25. This rod is adapted to extend through a number of the restraining devices and carries a fork 26 for operation within each of the bodies 6. The rod extends through the side walls of the recess 11 adjacent its rear wall, and has the fork 26 rigidly secured to it within the recess. The fork extends forwardly and the tines 27 thereof pass on opposite sides of the push rod 20, under the pin 28. A lever 29 is rigidly secured at one end to the rod 25, and carries a latch rod 30, which is adapted to engage the toothed plate 31 to hold the lever in any desired position. The latch rod works through a guide 32, carried upon the lever 29, and is connected at its upper end to a bell crank lever 33. When the upper end of the lever 29 is swung rearwardly, the rod 25 is rotated so as to cause all of the forks 26, which are connected thereto, to be swung upwardly so as to raise all of the push rods 20 and thus it will be seen that a plurality of restraining devices are simultaneously operated so as to release the animals which are connected thereto.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that I have provided an extremely simple, practical, and reliable restraining device for horses, cattle, and other animals, which may be operated in conjunction with a plurality of similar devices, and which may be operated independently of any other devices.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A restraining device of the character described including a body having a cham ber formed therein and opening upon the lower edge thereof, the body being also formed with a recess in its forward face, a locking pin movable across said recess, a vertically movable push rod, and means for connecting the upper end of the locking pin to the upper end of the push rod, said push rod extending through the chamber formed in the body, an upward movement of the push rod withdrawing the locking pin from said recess.
2. A restraining device, including a body having a chamber formed therein and opening upon the lower edge thereof, the Body being also formed with a recess opening upon its forward edge, a locking pin movable into and from said recess, a push pin extending through the chamber formed in the body, means connecting the push pin with the locking pin, a rotatable member ex tending transversely through the body, and means rigid with the rotatable member for elevating the push pin.
3. A restraining device, including a body having a chamber formed therein and opening upon the lower edge thereof, the body being also formed with a recess opening upon its forward edge, a vertically movable locking pin movable into and from said rocess, a vertically movable push rod extending through the chamber formed in the body, means connecting the push rod and the locking pin, a rotatable rod extending transversely through the chamber formed in the body, a fork rigidly secured to said rotatable rod and having a pair of tines extending on opposite sides of the push rod, and a pin carried by the push rod for engagement by the upper faces of the tines, a rotation of the actuating rod causing the fork to lift the push rod.
