.Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. LLoYo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steam boiler furnaces, the object of the invention being to provide an improved arrangement of drums, ring, and segments connected by water tubes and located withl may freely circulate in these segments and freceive the heat units radiated therefrom. IAn upper drum 16 corresponding to drum 5, except that the upper drum has no flange in the combustion chamber of a furnace in such a manner as to utilize to a maximum degree the heat units of the fuel to rapidly generate steam or bring the water to a high degree of temperature.
A further object is to provide an improved steam boiler furnace of this character with a fuel supplying magazine, discharging centrally through heating drums into the fire box so as to supply the fuel as it is needed.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in vertical longitudinal sect-ion illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a similar view in drums 5 is supported. The wall of the furnace inclines inwardly from said ledge 3, so that the space 6 constituting the fire box is appreciably smaller in diameter than the heating chamber above. A supporting ring 7 is secured in the wall 1, and supports any approved form of grate 8, separating the fire box above from the ash pit 9 below. The supporting ring 7 also supports a hollow ring 10 which I shall term, for convenience of description, a base ring. This base ring constitutes the inlet chamber and is connected by. any number of pipes 11 with the Water supply or with the return of any system. The drum 5 and ring 10 are connected by a circular series of water tubes 12 secured 1n openings in the bottom of drum 5, and in opening in the top of ring 10. Above and below the door opening 13 in the furnace wall, hollow segments 14 are located and are connected by short water pipes 15with the upper drum 5 and the ower ring 10 respectively, so that the water 4, is located in the upper portion of the heating chamber 2, and is connected by relatively large water tubes 17 with the drum 5 below. These water tubes 17 are secured in openings in the bottom of drum 16, and also secured in openings in the top of drum 5.
20 is an outlet flue into which the smoke and gases pass after their passage through the fines 18. It will be noted that this outlet flue 20 is in a horizontal plane adjacent the lower drum 5, so that the smoke and gases must pass downwardly around the outside of drum 16 and around the outside of water tubes 17 before enteringthe flue 20. The drums'5 and 16 are provided with relatively large central openings 21 in which acylindrical magazine 22 is mounted. The upper end of this magazine 22 communicates with a hopper 23 secured to a cap ring 24 on the furnace wall 1. The top of the hopper is closed and provided with a hinged door 25 to admit fuel thereto. The lower end of the magazine 22 projects into the fire box and is adapted to feed fuel thereto. In operation, the water entering through pipes 11 flows upwardly through the several water tubes 12 and 15, and circulating within the segments 14, receives the maximum of heat provide as many of these fiues and tubes I would have it understood that I do not limit myself to any particular number or arrangement of the water tubes and fines connecting the drums 5 and 16, but would have it understood that it is my intention to as space will permit.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my inventiou, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1-. The combination with a, furnace wall having an internal supporting shoulder, a drum supported on said shoulder, a second drum above the first-mentioned drum, water tubes connecting said drums, tubular fiues extending through the last-mentioned water tubes and communicating with the spaces above and below" said drums, a magazine projecting through the central openings in both. of said drums, the lower portion of the furnace below the lower drum constituting a fire box, vertical water tubes in said fire box communicating with the lower drum, and a base ring communicating with all of said last-mentioned water tubes, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a furnace wall of two'internal diameters, a drum having an annular flange supported on the wall at one end of the larger internal diameter thereof, a hollow ring supported within the furnace wall below the drum, water tubes connecting the ring with the drum, hollow segments located above and below the door space in the wall, water tubes connecting said segments with the drum and with the ring respectively, a second drum above the firstmentioned drum, water tubes connecting said drums, tubular flues extending through said last-mentioned water tubes and communicat- As the water is heated, it

3. The combination with a furnace wall of two internal diameters having an annular ledge at the lower end of its lar er diameter, said larger diameter constltuting a heating chamber, and said smaller diameter constituting a fire box, a water inlet ring horizontally positioned in the fire box, a drum located in the heating chamber at the juncture of the heating chamber with the fire box, water tubes connecting the ring with said drum; a second drum smaller in diameter than the internal diameter of the heating chamber located above the firstmentioned drum, water tubes connecting said drums, tubular flues extending through the drums and through the water tubes, and an outlet flue located in the furnace wall adjacent the lower drum, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a furnace wall of two internal diameters having an annular ledge at the lower end of its larger diameter, said larger diameter constituting a heating chamber, and said smaller diameter constituting a' fire box, a water inlet ring horizontally positioned in the fire box, a drum located in the heating chamber at the juncture of the heating chamber with the fire box, water tubes connecting the ring with said drum, a second drum smaller in diameter than the internal diameter of the heating chamber located above the first-mentioned drum, water tubes connecting said drums, tubular fines extending through the drums and through the water tubes, an outlet flue located in the furnace wall adjacent the lower drum, said drums having alined central openings, a cylindrical magazine 10- rated in said openings, and a hopper secured in the upper end of theffurnace wall and communicating with said magazine, substantially as described. a
