To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. HAennrHnY, a citizen of the United States, residmg at Linwood, in the county, of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing-Cans, of which the following is a spamfication.
My invention relates to improvements in dispensing'cans, and more particuluarly to an improved air inlet valve therefor, the object of the invention being to provide a valve of this character which permlts a1r to be admitted to the can while the latter is in pouring position, so that the liquid will run freely from the outlet of the can.
A further object is to provide improvements of this character which are especially adapted for use in connection with large cans ordinarily employed for dispensing gasolene and the like.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construct-ion and combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating my im-' provements. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudi- 'nal section showing the valve in elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 3 3 of Fig.2, and Fig. 4 is a view in section on the line 4.4 of Fig. 2.
1 represents a can or other receptacle having a reduced outlet end 2.
3 is the ordinary supporting bail of the can and 4 is my improved air inlet valve which is secured in the side of the can in convenient position to be operated by the thumb of the user, while holding the can at an incline for pouring as seen in Fig. 1.
The valve 4 comprises a cylindrical member 5 on which a cup shaped cap 6. telescopes. The cylinder 5 is provided in one end with an opening 7 which is normally closed by a valve 8. The valve is screwed onto the threaded end of a rod 9. This rod throughout the greater portion of its end is angular, and extends through angular ope11- ings in the top 10 of cylinder 5, and in the cap 6, and is securely riveted in the latter.
A coiled spring 12 is interposed between the top of the cylinder 5, and the cap, and is inclosed within the latter. This spring exerts an upward pressure on the cap and rod 9 to normally hold the valve 8' in closed position.
The lower end of cylinder 5 is screwthreaded and is adapted to screw into a threaded ring 13 formed in the'side of the can, and this ring 13 has an annular flange 14 at its inner end upon which a gasket 15 is located, so that the end of the cylinder 5 when screwed a ainst this gasket forms a tight juncture with the can.
The cylinder 5 is provided with a plurality of openings 16 which are normally out of register with openings 17 in the side walls ofcap 6, so that dirt and foreign matter are excluded from the valve.
When the ca 6 is forced inwardly to open the valve .8, t e openings 16 and 17 are reglstered, so that the air freely enters the can to allow: the liquid to flow freely through the outlet 2. As soon as-pressure on the valve is released, the spring 12 returns the cap to the position shown in Fig. 3, effectually closing the o enings 16, and rendering the device perfectly tight.
My improved valve illustratedin Figs. 2, 3, and 1, may be readily screwed into the can by the employment of a nail or spanner wrench which may be inserted through the openings 16 and 17 and used as a handle to turn the valve either to screw it into place or unscrew it from the can.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended .claims.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Let ters Patent is: 3
1. In combination with a dispensing can having a screw-threaded opening therein, a cylindrical member screwed into the opening in the can and having a closed outer end, a cap on the cylindrical portion, a valve normally closing an openlng in the inner end 'of the cylindrical portion, a rod connecting out of register, and said openings registered when the cap is moved to open the valve, substantially as described.
2. An air inlet device of the character described, comprising a cylindrical member having a closed outer end, and externally screw-threaded at its inner open end, a valve adapted to close said inner open end a rod secured to said valve and promoting through the closed outer end 0 member, a cap telescoping on the outer end ofsaid cylindrical member and secured to said rod, a coiled spring around the rod besaid cylindrical tween the cap and the closed outer end of the cylindrical member, said cylindrical 15 portion and cap having openings therein normally held out of register by said spring, and said openings registered when the cap is moved to open In testimony name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
