To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, JAMES L. HAMILTON, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Grand Junction, county of Mesa, and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Orchard-Heaters, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to orchard heaters, and specifically to a draft controlling device for such heaters.
The primary object of the invention is to provide, in an orchard heater of the oil burning type, means whereby a regulatable air supply may be admitted to the stack for facilitating the combustion within said stack of gases generated within the fuel receptacle or reservoir which communicates with said stack.
A further object is to provide in connection with an apparatus of the character mentioned meansofor regulating the air supply to the fuel receptacle for mixing with the gases prior to their entrance to the stack. And a still further object is to provide means for thoroughly commingling air with the gases before the combustion point is reached in order to produce a highly eflicient combustible mixture.
With these andother objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations: of elements which will hereinafter be exemplified, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, form1ng a part of this specification, in wh1ch Figure 1- is a central vertical section of an orchard heater cover and stack, illustrating a preferred embodiment of'my 1nvent1on; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showlng a mod1- fication.
Referring to said drawings n whlch like designating characters distinguish lilre parts throughout the several views1 lndicates a cover for the fuel reservoir of an orchard heater of a common oil burning type,sa1d cover having provided therein the usual openin through which commumcatlon 1s had with a superposed stack. Having its lower and larger end suitably attached to said cover about said opening is a short frusto-conical stack 2, hereinafter termed the inner staclr. Disposed in concentric encircling relatlon to said inner stack is a second stack 3, hereinafter termed the outer stack, the same being of greater length than said lnner stack. The outer stack is preferably of frusto-conical shape and is mounted with its smaller end lowermost, as shown.
Referring specifically to Fig. 1, there is interposed between the inner stack and the outer stack a sleeve 4 which more or less closely embraces and is rotatable with respect to said inner stack. The lower end of the outer stack seats upon said sleeve near the lower end of and is rotatable with the latter. Due to the fact that the outer stack and the sleeve 4 are tapered in opposite directions, they diverge upward one from the other from their point of engagement near the lower end of the sleeve, as shown. Formed in said outer stack at a suitable point is an inwardly directed annular crimp 5 which embracingly engages the sleeve near the upper end of the latter. Thus there is formed between the outer stack and said sleeve an annular chamber 6 to which air is freely admitted through a plurality of openings or perforations 7 provided in said stack.
Provided respectively in the inner stack 2 and the sleeve 4 are perforations 8 and 9, those of the latter being adapted to be carried into and out of registration with those of the former by rotation of said sleeve, ac complished in any appropriate manner, as by applying slight power to a lever 10 mounted upon said sleeve below the lower end of the outer stack 3. Thus, by adjustment of said sleeve the volume of air admitted to the inner stack from the chamber 6 through the perforations 8 and 9 is regulated; Referring now to Fig 2, it will be observed that the positions of the outer stack and the sleeve with respect to each other are reversed, the stack 3 having its lower end seated in embracing engagement with the inner stack near the lower end of the latter, having its crimp 5 embracingly engaging the inner stack, and the sleeve 4* being disposed in embracing relation to the lower end of, and rotatable with respect to, said outer stack. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with the cover of an orchard heater, said cover having an opening therein, of an inner stack mounted on said cover about said opening and having perforations, therein, an outer perforated stack surrounding the inner stack to form an annular inclosed chamber between said stacks, an inwardly directed annular crimp formed in the outer stack to inclose said annular chamber, and a perforated sleeve embracing one of said stacks and adapted for rotation with respect to the latter for carrying the perforations thereof into and out of registration with those of the stack which it embraces.
2. The combination with the cover of an orchard heater, said cover having an opening therein, of an inner stack mounted on said cover about said opening and having perforations therein, an outer perforated stack associated with said inner stack and shaped to form an annular chamber between said stacks, and ii -perforated sleeve embracing one of said stacks and adapted for rotation with respect to the latter for carrying the perforations thereof into and out of registration with those of the stack which it embraces, said cover having a series of perforations therein encircling the opening thereof, and said sleeve having at its lower end an annular flange provided with perforations which are adapted, upon rotation of said sleeve, to be carried into and out of registration with said series of perforations provided in the cover;
3. The combination with the cover of an orchard heater, said cover having an opening therein, of an inner stack mounted on said cover about said opening and having perforations therein,a perforated sleeve embracing said stack and rotatable-.-'-w1th respect thereto for carrying its perforations into and out of registration with those of said stack, and an outer stack having portions" disposed in. embracing. engagement with said sleeve and adapted to rotate with the latter, said outer stack being formed to provide an annular chamber between it and said sleeve and havingpassages. opening therethrough into said chamber,
4. The .combination with the cover of an orchard heater, said cover having an opening therein, of an inner stack mounted on said cover about said opening and having perforations therein, a perforated sleeve em. bracin said stack and rotatable with respect t ereto for carryin its perforations into and out of registration with those of said stack, and an outer stack having por tions in embracing engagement with said sleeve and adapted to rotate with the latter, said outer stack being formed to provide an annular chamber between it and said sleeve and having passages opening therethrough into said chamber, and an annular flange formed' on the lower end of said sleeve and resting on said cover about the opening in the latter, said cover and said said cover about said opening and having perforations therein, a perforated sleeve em bracing said stack and rotatable with re spect thereto for carryin its perforations into and out of registration with those of said stack, and an outer tapered stack hat ing its smaller end disposed in embracing engagement with said sleeve near the lower end of the latter, said outer stack having an inwardly directed crimp therein which. embracingly engages said sleeve near the upper end of the latter whereby is formed an inclosed chamber intermediate said outer stack and said sleeve, and means admitting air to said chamber.
6. The combination with the cover of an orchard heater, said cover having anopenmg therein, of an inner stack mounted on said cover about said opening and having perforations therein an outer perforated stack associated with said inner stack to form an annular chamber .between said stacks, and an inwardly directed annular crimp formed in the outer stack to inclose and an inwardly directed nooegeeu g opening and havin perforations therein, an outer perforate downwardi tapered stack surrounding the inner star: to form an annular chamber between said stacks, annular crimp formed in the outer stack at a point adjacent to the upper end of the inner stack to inclose said annular chamber.
