BRICKLAYERS GUIDE-LINE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 31, 1914i.
Application filed November 9, 1912. Serial No. 730,311.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, MILLER Know and ADAM C. BIBLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleburne, in the county of Johnson, State of TeXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bricklayers Guide-Line Holders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to guide line holders designed for removably securing a guide line to the guide bricks of a wall under construction,
An object of the present invention is to provide a holder which may be utilized in securing the terminal or an intermediate portion of the guide line in stationary position on the wall.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder having a pair of spring controlled jaws for engagement with a brick to securely anchor the holder to the brick.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a front elevation of a wall showing a plurality of our improved holders in applied position for securing the guide line. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the holder. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is a detail perspective view of the holder. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a wall under construction. In ordinary wall construction after the corners 11 are built up a few courses, a guide line 12 is stretched from one corner to the other, and a guide brick 13 is set in the wall midway between the two corners and level with the tops thereof, the guide line being fastened to the top front edge of the guide brick 13 and to the corner guide bricks 13 The present invention contemplates providing a holder for securing the guide line in position, and to attain this end a pair of rightangular brick clamping jaws 14; are provided each having a handle 15, the handles of both jaws being adjustably pivoted together intermediate the ends by a hinge as shown at 16. A helical spring 17 is interposed between the jaws above the hinge and normally holds the jaws closed. To apply the holder it is simply necessary to press the handles together above the hinge whereupon the jaws open to receive the brick upon which the holder is to be applied. When the handles are released the jaws close and grip the brick.
Each jaw is provided in the inner face of the elbow with a groove 18, and is further provided with a split pinch plate 19 on the outer face of the elbow. A guide arm 20 is adapted to be fixedly secured to the outer face of the elbow of either jaw by means of a set screw 21, the guide arm being terminally equipped with a guide eye 22 adapted to aline with the adjacent groove 18. The guide line is trained through the guide eye thence through the groove and thence engaged in the notch of the split pinch plate 19 of the holders disposed on the corner guide bricks 13, while the line is engaged through the guide eye and groove only of the holder disposed on the central guide brick 13.
For clamping the ends of the guide line against escape from their respective holders, each holder is equipped on the outer side of one of the jaws with a clamp 23 which is secured at the upper end to the jaw by means of a set screw 24 and is equipped at the lower end with a swinging latch 25 adapted to engage the edge of the jaw. The terminal of the guide line is passed between the clamp and the jaw and the set screw tightened, then the latch is turned to operative position to prevent the pull of the guide line from disengaging the clamp from operative position.
What is claimed, is
1. The combination with a pair of brick clamping arms, each including a vertical portion for engaging the side of the brick and a horizontal portion for engaging the top of the brick, of a guide arm connected with the horizontal portion of the brick V clamping arm and having the line eye adjacent the free end thereof and a clamping plate pivoted to the vertical portion of the brick'clamping arm and adapted to clamp the line against such vertical portion of the brick clamping arm. 7 a
2. The combination with a pair of brick clamping arms, each having a vertical brick engaging portion adapted to bear against the side of the brick, of a horizontal brick engaging portion adapted to rest on top of the brick, of a guide arm for the line connected with the horizontal portion of the brick clamping arm, a line clamp pivoted to the Vertical portion of the brick clamping arm, and a bifurcated line engaging member projecting upward from the brick clamping MILLER KNOTT.
