WINFRED R. WHITWELL AND JOHN CHARLIE KELLY, OF REDONDO BEACH, CALIFORNIA.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 24, 1914.
Application filed May 17, 1913. Serial No. 768,327.
To all tolto/m it may concern.:
Be it known that we, IVINFRED R. WHIT- WELL and JOHN CHARLIE KELLY, citizens of the United States, residing at Redondo Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to bottles, and more particularly to bottles of the non-refillable type, and has for an object to provide a bottle vwhich cannot be conveniently refilled after the original contents have once been withdrawn therefrom.
The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of means within the neck of the bottle body and whereby, upon the tilting of the bottle body, the contents thereof will flow therefrom, the said means being so arranged as to close the exit from the bottle bodyT when the same is in an upright position.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical fragmentary sec-V tional view of the bottle, showing the valve in closed position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casinfr.
Ieferriiig more particularly to the views, we disclose a bottle body 10 including an integral neck 11 in which is arranged a collar 12 preferably made of cork, the said neck 11 immediately above the upper edge of the collar 12, being provided with a circular recess 13 formed in the wall of the neck. The casing 14 is adapted to be inserted in the neck 11 and encircled by the collar 12, the said casing having a bottom 15 provided with an opening 16, the wall of which forms a valve seat 1T. The upper end of the casing terminates in a series of spaced springlike members 18 provided with integral lateral flanges 19, also of a spring-like nature. Now it will be apparent that when the casing 14 is inserted in the neck 11 the edges of the flanges 19 will spring into the recess 13 to lock the casing within the neck, thus also securing the collar 12 against accidental outward movement in the neck of the bottle body. The casing 14 supports a cylindrical member 2O closed at the top and provided with a series of side openings 2l, a ball valve 22 being arranged to loosely operate in the member 2O and normally seating on the valve seat 17, it being readily apparent that when the bottle body is tilted, the ball valve will be advanced in the cylindrical member and unseated from the valve seat 17 so that the contents of the bottle body can flow through the opening 16 and thence through the side openings 21.
A frusto-conical battle 23 is secured within the casing 14 and encirclcs the upper part of the cylindrical member 20, the upper end of the baille 23 being restricted to provide an opening 24: through which the fluid flows after passing through the side openings 21 of the cylindrical member 20, a disk 25 being carried on the upper end of the battle 23 and of a diameter substantially equal to the inner diameter of the neck of the bottle body so that the peripheral edge of the disk 25 will engage the inner wall of the neck of the bottle body so as to prevent persons from tampering with the flanges 19 of the members 1S and which repose in the recess 13 formed in the inner wall of the neck.
A suicient space is left in the neck, be` tween the upper face of the disk 25 andthe upper end of the neck, to permit of inserting the usual stopper in the neck to close and normally seal the saine, and it will be apparent that when it is desired to pour some of the contents of the bottle body therefrom, it is only necessary to Vremove the stopper and then tilt 4the bottle body to advance the valve 22 into open position, whereupon the contents of the bottle body will How through the opening 16 in the member 20 and thence through the openings 21 in the member into the casing 14, after which the fluid will pass through the outlet 24 into a glass or other suitable receptacle provided to receive the fluid.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
In a non-refillable bottle, the combination with a bottle body including a neck, of a casing in the neck and liaving'the bottom thereof provided with an opening constituting a seat and an outlet for the bottle body, ,said casing having means integral therewith for locking the same in a bottle neck, a ball valve normally reposing on the seat to close the said outlet, a member supported on the being spaced from the said casing and havbottom of the said casing and confining the ing an outlet opening registering. with an said ball Valve, the said member having a Opening in the said balie. series of openings therein and adapted to i In testimony whereof we aHX our signa- 5 limit the forward movement of the ball tures in presence of two witnesses. Y
