Description

R. JBNKS.
FASTENER. APPLIOATIION FILED JULY so, 1913.
1,091,344, Patented Mar. 24, 191 1 illTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN JENKS, 0F YOUNGSTOWN, OHI O.
FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, REUBEN JENKs, a citizen of England, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Maho-ning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fasteners, and has particular reference to that type consisting of detachable sections which are adapted to engage the free ends of the bands, securing the several parts of a locomotive boiler.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which provides for the securing of the several parts of the locomotive boiler in a more expeditious and reliable manner than has heretofore been provided.
A further important object of my invention is to construct a device of the above mentioned character, comprising detachable sections, slotted vertical members in which is adjustably mounted a locking lever, and
means for locking the lever to hold the sections against accidental derangement.
An equally important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is reliable in its operation, constructed of few parts and therefore cheap to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are ac complished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a top plan view of my fastener assembled, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing my fastener secured to the free terminals of the band and the manner of locking them.
Proceeding now to the description of my invention, is consists of preferably rectangularly detachable sections 1 and 2, each of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 30, 1913.
Patented Mar. 24:, 1914. Serial No. 782,077.
which is provided with openings through which are inserted rivets 3, or any other suitable fastening means for securing the sections 1 and 2 to the free terminals of the band, designated at B as an entirety, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The section 1 is recessed intermediate its longitudinal edges at its inner terminal, as indicated at 4, and is provided upon opposite sides of the recess with vertical longitudinally slotted members 5 and 6. The sec tion 1 is provided with a chamfered portion 7 between the members 5 and 6 and at the inner end of the recess before mentioned, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
The section 2 is provided at its inner terminal with an integral tongue 8 centrally of its longitudinal edges which is curved upwardly and inwardly toward the section 2 to provide a hook-shaped bearing member 9. An enlarged shoulder 10 is formed upon the tongue 8 adjacent the inner terminal of the hook-shaped bearing member 9. A pair of upstanding lugs 11 and 12 are formed integral with the outer terminal of the section 2, each of the lugs 11 and 12 are provided at their upper terminal with transverse openings 18.
j A locking lever designated. 14, as an entirety, is bowed intermediate its ends and reduced as shown at 15, and is adjustably mounted upon the longitudinally slotted members 5 and 6 by means of a pin 16 extending transversely through the enlarged portion 17 formed on the lever adjacent one terminal thereof, and loosely engaging the slots in the members, 5 and 6. The lever 14: is provided adjacent its outer free terminal with a transverse notch 1 1 which is adapted to engage the outer edge of the section 2 when the lever is in its locked position. As a means for locking the lever, a cotter pin lt ings 13 of each of the upstanding lugs 11 and 12 and engages the upper surface of the lever 14, thereby providing the desired action. The inner free terminal 18 of the lever 14 is bent inwardly toward the lever 11 to provide a rounded hook-shaped bearing portion 19 adapted to engage the hookshaped bearing portion 9 formed on the tongue 8 of the section 2.
The operation of assembling the fastener and securing the free terminal of the band may be briefly described as follows: The seetion 1 having the vertical longitudinally slotted members 5 and 6 and the lever 14 adjustably mounted therein is secured to one terminal of the band B, after the manner which has been herein described, and the section 2 is secured to the other terminal of the band B in such manner that the sections 1 and 2 are essentially in horizontal alinement. The lever 14 is moved upwardly as far as possible within the members 5 and 6 and swung into a position reverse to that when the lever is in its locked position, so that the hook-shaped portion 19 thereof is adapted to engage the hook-shaped bearing member 9 of the tongue 8. The lever is then moved upwardly, which action causes the tongue 8 of the section 2 to be moved between the slotted members 5 and 6, and into engagement with the chamfered portion 7 of the section 1, thereby causing upon the continued movement of the lever 14, the free terminals of the band B to meet, and the enlarged portion 17 of the lever 14 to engage the shoulder 10 formed on the tongueS of the section 2. serted after the manner described through the opening 18 in the upstanding lugs 11 and 12, and the rounded hook-shaped bearing portion 19 of the lever 14 is engaged by the hook-shaped portion 9 of the tongue 8. It
will thus be seen that when it is desired to detach the several parts of my device, that the chamfered portion 7 of the plate 1 assists during the action of removing the lever 14 from the slotted members 5 and 6 and the section 2 from the section 1.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
The cotter pin 14 is then in- Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A fastener comprising detachable sections, longitudinally slotted members integral with one of said sections and disposed at right angles thereto, a hook-shaped ton ue formed on one end of the other detacluible section between the longitudinal edges thereof, a lever adjustably mounted within said longitudinally slotted members, a hookshaped portion formed on one terminal of said lever and adapted to cooperate with said first named hook-shaped tongue during the operation of locking said sections and to lie within the hook shaped tongue when in locked position, the other terminal of said lever having a transverse groove therein, adapted to receive the edge of the last mentioned section, a pair of upstanding apertured members on last named section and removable fastening means adapted to be inserted through the upstanding members and above the lever to lock the lever in locked position.
2. A fastener consistingof detachable sections oppositely disposed bearing members formed integral with one of said sections, said bearing members provided with longitudinal slots, a lever adjustably and pivotally mounted within said longitudinal slots, a hook-shaped tongue formed on the other of said sections, a hook-shaped member formed on the inner free terminal of said lever adapted to coact with said hook-shaped tongue during the operation of securing said sections and to lie within the hook-shapod tongue when the lever is in locked position, and means for locking said lever to hold said sections in looking engagement with each other, said lever having a transverse notch in one end adapted to receive the edge of said last named section, when the lever is in locked position.
In testimony whereof I al'lix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
