WITNESSES v M IIVVEIVTOR.
ATTORNEYS MAX COI-IN, OFNEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT-WAIST.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented ltlay, 1'? 1914,
Application filed April 8, 1911. Serial No. 619,638.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MAX CoHN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt-Waists, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to shirtwaists, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and which is adapted to be drawn on over the head and secured at the neck and at the waist by draw cords or similar devices; a further object being to provide a garment of the class specified which is composed of front and back portions only, said front and back portions being connected on the sides only, and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view showing my improved shirtwaist and the method of using the same ;Fig. 2, a back view thereof Fig. 3, a partial section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 ;Fig. 4, a partial section on the line fir-4: of Fig. l;and, Fig. 5, a transverse section on the line 55 of Fig. 2, but showing only the garment.
In the practice of my improvement, I provide a shirtwaist a which is composed of one piece and the front and back portions of which are connected under the arms, as shown at a in Fig. 5, and said garment is provided with the usual sleeves or sleeve members a which are also formed integrally therewith. The neck portion of the garment is open at the front as shown at b, and said neck portion, in the form of construction shown is finished with a lace band, yoke or similar device 0, in the top of which is placed a draw cord d which may be tied at the front as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom of the garment is also provided with a draw cord or tape 6 which may also be tied at the front, and with this construction the garment may be drawn on over the head, and the neck portion, and waist portion, may be secured as shown in Fig. 1, by means of the draw cords (Z and 6.
Instead of the draw cord 6 at the bottom of the waist of the garment, an elastic cord may be employed, and in practice, the bottom waist portion of the garment is made large enough to permit said garment to be drawn freely over the head and shoulders, and with my improvement all buttons, hooks, and other fastening devices are done away with and a neat and attractive garment is produced.
Although I prefer to make my improved shirtwaist of one piece, as described, this construction is not absolutely necessary, and said garment may be made of a number of pieces if preferred, the distinctive features being the method of forming the garment so that it can be drawn on over the head and secured at the throat and waist, whereby simplicity of construction is obtained together with a reduced expense of manufao ture, and whereby all fastening devices of the ordinary type are dispensed with.
While I have shown and described my improvement as pertaining to shirtwaists only, it will be understood that my invention is not limited to this specific style of garment, as said invention may also be employed in the manufacture of gowns or dresses, or other garments comprising a waist portion and a skirt portion connected, all that is necessary in order to do this being to make the waist portion of the gown or dress large enough to permit of its being drawn on over the head and provide said waist portion of the gown or dress with a draw cord or elastic cord, as herein shown and described.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A ladys body garment composed of a front portion and a back portion each formed in one piece, said portions being united at their meeting edges at the sides of the garment, and having a waist portion of a size suflicient to permit the passage of the shoulders of the wearer, and a neck opening, the front portion provided with a vertical slit extending downwardly a short distance only and communicating at its upper end with the neck opening to enlarge the neck opening temporarily to permit the passage therethrough of the head, means for contreating the Waist portion and holding it in presence of the Subscribing witnesises this contracted position While being Worn, and 7th day of April, 1911. means for detachably uniting the upper edges of the slit adjacent to the neck open- MAX COHN 5 ing. Vitnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing J AOOB IsIzAELsoN, as my invention I have signed my name in BELLE WALLACE.
