Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1'7, 1914.
Application filed March 11 1913. Serial No. 753,561.
To all'whom it'may concern:
Be it known thatI, EMERALD B. MCNEER, a cltiz'en of the United States, residing at Glen' Wilton, inthe county of Botetourt,
State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Overshoes and Leggings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in overshoe and leggings and has for its object to so construct an overshoe that the same ma be worn independent of the legging or the same may be connected to the lower edge of the legging so that a water tight connection is obtained.
With these and otherobjects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations and arrangements of arts to be hereinafter more fully describe claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figurel is a side elevation showing the legging and overshoe connected. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. 3 is a detail VIBW of a portion of the spring used. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modlfied form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line.
55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the .overshoe. 4 I
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an overshoe having formed near its upper edge an annular groove 2,-said 0e during the manufacture of the same. The legging 3 is formed from any suitable water roof material, and may have its upper e ge provided with a draw string 4, so that the same will be held in its proper osition upon the leg of the wearer. The
lower edge of the legging 3 issewed so as to provide a tube 5 in wh1ch is placed a coil spring 6, the terminals of which may be secured in any suitable manner. A reinforcing spring .7 is placed within the spring may be easily an 6 and consists of a plurality of coils 8 which are connected by straight sections 9. The tensions of the springs 6 and 7 are such that the leggin may be drawn over the overshoe so that said springs will be in a position to engage the annular groove 2 formed in the overshoe, thus firmly connecting the legging and overshoe together.
In the modified form of the invention the legging 10 is provided near its lower end w1th a strip 11 which is secured interiorly thereof and incases springs 12 and 13, said springs being identical to the springs 6 and 7 hereinbefore mentioned. The extreme lower edge of the leggin 10 is provided with sockets 14 which are a apted to detachably engagf the heads 15 which are secured to the overs 0e 1, and below the annular groove 2 formed therein.
.From the foregoing description it will be seen that a leggin has been provided which 5 quickly connected to an overshoe, and when connected thereto forms a water tight article.
What is claimed is 2- 1. The combination with a legging of an overshoe having an annular groove ormed in its outer surface near the top edge thereof, and means carried by the lower edge of the leggin for detachably on aging said groove.
2. T e combination wit a legging of an overshoe having an annular groove formed in its outer surface near the top edge thereof, saidlegging havin its lower edge rovided with a, tube, a co spring carried in the tube, and a reinforcing spring mounted within the coil spring and consisting of a plurality of coils connected by straight sections, said tube being adapted to detachably enga e the'groove 1n the overshoe, as and for t e purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EMERALD B. MGNEER.
