To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, FREDERIC P. Marini, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lancaster, in the county of Grant and State ot Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to drinkin cups. At the present time it is 'general y well recognized as a fact that use in common by diterentpeople of drinking cups and glasses is unsanitaryA and is a fruitful cause of spreading disease, both contagious and in-` fectious. For this reason, the use of public drinking cups and glasses is generally looked upon With growing disfavor and in some communities is even prohibited by legal enactment. Where the use of public drinking glasses is prohibited, or when a person desires to avoid the use thereof, when available, it is rendered necessary that people, particularly when traveling, shall carry their own drinking cups, which is in-Y convenient, or shall purchase them when they wish to drink at a public drinking place, which is some times impossible, and also involves more or less expense.

The object of the present invention is to provide a drinkino cup which will be perfectly sanitary, c can and healthful and which will overcome all of the objections in cident to the use in common by different people of drinking cupsand glasses.

To this end my improved drinkin cup comprises the various features and etailsv of construction hereinafter described land claimed.

ln the accompanying drawing, in which my invention is fu ly illustrate Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the parts of my improved drinking cup preliminary to inserting the inner paper section into the holder. Referring nowto the drawing, my improved drinkin cup comprises an inner section l, which orms the receptacle proper for 'the Water or other liquid, and an outer section, desi nated as a whole b the reference letter which forms a ho der for the inner section 1 and is adapted to receive said section and to su por-t .the same to prevent collapsing in han ling-#as when drinkingwhen said inner section or receptacle l is illedwith water. 'The inner section or receptacle proper 1 of my im roved drinking cupl forms a tube both en s of which are initially open, and is made of paper, preferably indurated or Waterproof paper of about the weight of ordinary Wrapping paper. The holder A comprises a hollow or tubular body portion 2, Whichis preferably made of suitable sheet metal. The opening in the body portion 2 of said holder is made of proper size .and shape to receive the tubular paper section l of my improved drinking cup and to facilitate inserting the tubular paper section l lengthwise therethrough, in the manner presently described, the upper edge of said body portion 2 is preferably -llared as shown at 3. rlhe holder A also com- 2 of said holder at opposite ends and at sub` stantially diametrically opposite points, suitable bearing lugs 6 being formed on the body portion 2 of the holder to provide bearings for said clamping plates 4 and 5. The meeting edges of the clamping plates 4 and 5 are constructed and arranged to overlap or interlock when said plates are fully closed, thus providing for forming a fold in the portion of the paper section l engaged by the meeting edges of said clamping` plates 4 and 5, which shall be relatively long and oiiset between its ends. As shown, the meeting edges of said clamping plates 4 and 5 are oppositely rabbeted, as shown at To insure that the clamping plates 4 and '5 .shall grip the gathered portion of the paper section 1 of the cup firmly, said clamping plates -4 and 5 are made quite heavy and the free end of the clamping plate 5 on which the underlying rabbet 8 is formed, is supported by means of a suitable stop on the body portion 2 of the holder A. As' shown,` said supporting stop consis'ts of the lower end of the handle 9 of the holder A, which is bent inwardly tov form a hook or shoulder, as shown at 10. In order that the hook 10 may not project below the under side of the clamping plate 5, the extreme end ofthe clamping plate 5 yis cut away on its under side, as shown at 11, to form an odset substantially equal to the thickness of the hook 10. To prevent the clamping plates 4 and 5 from cutting or tearing the paper, the corners of the meeting edges thereof are preferably rounded or blunted. The ,holder A preferably comprises, also, suitable means'located directly above the clamping plates 4 and 5 for gathering or folding the lower end of the paper section 1 of my improved cup as said paper section 1 is forced downwardly through the body portion 2 of said holder A. As shown, said gathering or folding means comprises plates 12 and 13 secured to the inner sides of the tubular section 2 l of said holder A, the upper ends of which are substantially flush with the inner surface'of said tubular section 2 and which and 15 likewise secured to the inner surface ofct-he body portion 2 of the holder A at substantially diametrically opposite points between the plates 12 and 13, and which converge downwardly in substantially the same manner as said plates 12 and 13. Where, as shown in the drawing, the pivotal points of the clamping plates 4 and 5 are located inside of the side ,walls of the body portion 2 of the holder A, and the bearing lugs 6 project inwardly from the inner surface thereof, the gathering or folding plates 12 and 13 will preferably be positioned so as to cover said bearing lugs 6 either wholly or in part, so that the lower edge of the paper section 1 shall not catch thereon when being inserted through the body portion 2 of the holder.

The paper section 1 of my improved cup is made longer than the body portion 2 of the holder, the relation being preferably such that when the paper section 1' of the cup is inserted in designed position in the holder A, the upper end of said paper section 1 will project above the body-portion 2 of the holder A such a distance, say from one and one-half to two inches, that it will be possible to drink from the paper section 1 without having the lips come into rcontact with any part of the holder.

The manner of using my improved cup is as follows; the description beginning with the holder A empty: The first step consists in inserting the paper section 1 into the holder A. Preliminary to this step the clamping plates 4 and 5 are turned pivotally outward into the position shown in Fig. 3, leaving the lower end of the body portion 2 of the holder A below the folding means open and unobstructed. The paper section l, distended into tubular shape, is then inserted from top to bottom through the` body portion 2 of the holder, until it projects below the clamping plates 4 and 5. As the lower end of said paper section 1 passes the gathering or folding plates 12 and 13 'and the noses 14 and 15, it will be partially gathered orY folded inwardly in proper position for engagement by the 'clamping plates 4 and 5.x Thev clamping plates 4 and 5 are then closed with a firm pressure which operates to clamp the sides of thepaper tube 1 between the meeting edges thereof, so as to seal the same and render it water tight. v

My invention contemplates the use of any desired or approved means for opening and closing the clamping plates 4 and 5, but such means forms no part of the present invention and it has therefore been considered undesirable to illustrate or describe such means in detail. Y

My invention contemplates that -each paper section 1 shall be used but once and /shall then .be discarded, each paper section 1 after being used, being removed from the holder and a new and unused paper section inserted therein. Such use necessarily requires that a supply of the paper sections 1 be provided so as to be readily .available4 when wanted for use. In order to economize space, said paper sections 1 will preferably be furnished fiat, it being necessary to distend the same before inserting them into the holder. Likewise, to facilitate inserting said paper sections 1in tubular form through the tubular body portion 2, a suitable former or die 16, is provided, said former being slightly smaller than the bore of' the tubular section 2 of fthe holder A. The paper sections 1, after being distended, are placed over the die or former 16, which is then inserted into the tubular section 2 of the holder A. When the lower end of said plunger strikes the folding plates, it is raised inside of the paper section 1 and is again depressed with said paper section, thus causing said paper section to project ably be forced down into the same so as t'o make the lower end thereof conform substantially to the shape of said die or former 16. lTo permit air to escape past said die or former, it is provided with suitable vent holes or openings which extend'lengthwise through the saine, as indicated at 17.

A holder for a paper vessel comprising an inclosing frame for said vessel, and clamping means constructed and arranged to open and close and adapted when open to permit said papervessel to be inserted into said holder in position for engagement by said clamping means, and when closed to seal the lower end of said paper vessel, substantially as described.

A holder for a paper vessel comprising an inclo-sing frame for said vessel, and clamping 'means constructed and arranged to open and close and adapted when open to permit said paper vessel to be inserted f into said holder in position for engagement by said clamping means, and when closed to seal the lower end of said paper vessel, said holder also comprising folding means adapted for gathering or contracting the lower end of said paper vessel, substantially as described.

3. A holder for a papel' vessel comprising a body port-ion adapted to receive said paper vessel and clamping plates supported on said body portion and movable toward and from each other and adapted when separated to permit said paper vessel to be 'inserted into said holder between said clamping plates, and when closed to grip said paper vessel between the meeting edges of said clamping plates and thereby to seal the lower. end thereof, substantially a's de scribed.

4. A holder for a paper vessel comprising a body portion adapted to receive said paper vessel and clamping plates supported on said body portion and movable ltoward and from each other and adapted when separated to permit said papervessel to be inserted into' said holder between said clamping plates, and when closed to grip said paper vessel between the meeting edges of said clamping plates and thereby to seal the lower end thereof, the meeting edges` of said clamping plates being constructed and arranged to interlock`with each other when closed, substantially as described.

5. A holder for a paper vessel comprising a body portion adapted to receive said paper vessel and pivotally supported clamping plates the adjacent edges of which are. adapted to be separated and brought into contact with each other by pivotal movement of said plates, and when separated to permit a paper vessel to Vbe inserted into said holder between the edges of said clamping plates and when closed to clamp said paper vessel. between the meeting edges ofI said clamping plates and thereby seal the lower end thereof, substantially as described.

6. A holder for a paper vessel comprising a body portion adapted to receive said paper vessel and clamping plates supported on said body portion and movable toward and from each other and adapted when separated to permit said paper vessel to be inserted into said holder between saidclalnping plates, and when closed to grip said paper vessel between the meeting edges of said clamping plates and thereby to seal the lower end thereof, the meeting edges of said clamping plates being rabbeted and a support for the free end of the underlying clamping plate, when closed, substantially as described.

7. A holder for a paper vessel comprising a body portion adapted to receive said paper vessel and clamping plates pivoted adjacent to their opposite ends to the lower end of the body portion of said holder so as to be movable toward and from each other to effect separation and contact ofthe adjacent edges of said clamping plates and adapted when separated to permit said paper vessel to be inserted into said holder between said clamping plates and when closed to seal the lower end of said paper vessel, substantially as described.

8. A holder for a paper vessel comprising a body portion adapted to receive said paper vessel and clamping plates pivoted adjacent to their opposite ends to the lower end of the body portion of said holder so as to be movable toward and from each other to effectseparation and contact of the adjacentl edges of said clamping plates and adapted whenseparated to permit said paper vessel to be inserted into said holder between said clamping plates and when closed to seal the lower end of said paper vessel, the meeting edges of said clamping plates being rabbeted and a fixed support on the body portion of said holder for the free end of the underlying clamping plate when in closed position, substantially as described.

9. A holder for a paper vessel comprising a body portion, clamping plates pivoted thereto and gathering or folding means on the inner surface of the body portion of said holder, said folding means comprising oppositely positioned plates and noses located intermediate said plates, both said plates and said noses converging downwardly, substantially as described.

10.
