Description

J. HEFP BRON. DRAFT REGULATOR FOR FURNAGES.-
APPLICATION FILED APR.24, 1913.

resents.
JOHN HEFFERON, or CHEYENNE, wyoivirn'e.
DBAFT-REGULATOR FOR FURNACES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Hnrrnnon, a citizen of thelUnited States, residlng at Cheyenne, in the county of Laramie and State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft- It'egulators for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein -to the accompanying drawing.
' This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in draft regulator attachments for furnaces and is particularly adapted to be used in connection with locomotives; the object being to provide a draft regulator in theform of a deflector plate which can be readily attached and used in connection with the ordinary door of the 10- comotive, whereby a direct draft will be prevented from striking the flue and crownsheet of the furnace. Another object of my invention is-to pro vide means for adjustably mounting the deflector plate forming the regulator, whereby the size of the door opening can'be regulated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a deflector plate which is so constructed that when in position, it will not interfere with the door in any way and one which can be thrown up out of -operation.- Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claim.
In the drawings-Figure 1, is an elevation of a portion of a locomotive showing the ap plication of my improved deflector plate forming the draft regulator, applied thereto; Fig. 2, is a vertical section through a portion of the furnace showing the position of the deflector plate within the door openihg or frame; and Fig- 3, is a perspective of the deflector plate, detached.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 indicates th-;fill1t ofthe' furnace of a locomotive; 2 the do'or opening or frame over which is arranged a hinged fire door L of any suitable construction. Arranged over the door openin in vertical alinement therewith, is the ordlnary oil cup 5; the above description being given so that the operation of my improved draft regulator when used in connection with the door opening of a furnace can be-readily'understood.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1913. Serial No. 763,403.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Fixed on the front 1 of the furnace over the door opening, are spaced angle irons 6, the lateral flanges 7 of which, are provided with inclined notches 8 forming keepers or bearings for the supporting pin 9 of the'defleotor plate 10 which is preferably pro-' vided with an eye 11 in which the pin 9 is rigidly secured. The lower end of the deflector plate is offset as shown at 12 and is slightly reduced asshown at 13 so as to extend into the door opening 2 when the door 4-is open, to deflect the air entering through the opening.
By adjusting-the supporting pin 9 of the deflector plate 10 in its supporting bearings vertically in either direction, the size of the opening 2 can be regulated in ordeitd regulate the dratt, and it will be seen that when the door is opened the deflector plate partly closes the upper portion thereof .in order to prevent a draft of cold air from passing directly to the fines and crown-sheet of the boiler. i
It will also be seen that by providing a deflector plate of this construction, a more perfect combustion is obtained in the fire box so as to form a partial smoke consumer and prevents any gases from escaping out of the door opening. It will also prevent the boiler from throwin out black smoke or fire and protects the reman from the direct heat radiating from the fire box through the- -"door opening when the door is opened.
The deflector plate is so constructed that when in use it fits snugly within the upper portion of the door opening, and is so mounted that it can be swung upwardly under the oil cup 5 out of-the way when not irn use.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a draft regulator which is especially adapted to be used in connection with locomotives, and comprises a deflector plate which can be adiust-w ed vertically in respect to the door opening so as to regulate the draft; and at the same time prevents the cold air passing directly to the crown-sheet and fines, whereby a more perfect combustion is obtained within. the fire box.
I claim:
The combination with a furnace, having a door opening and a door of a larger diametc:- than said opening for closing the same, of angle irons secured upon said furnace above said door opening prdvided with a series ofinclined notches, a deflector plate provided with an eye at its upper end hav- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature ing a pin arranged therein provided with in presenoe of two witnesses. v projecting ends mounted within companion J HEFFERON notches of, said angle plates, said plate havv mg a laterally extending reduced lower end Witnesses:
v capable of extending into said door opening WM. B. MOGINN, when said door is in closed or open position. EDWARD GARRITY, J r.
