Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed December 27, 1912. Serial No. 738,889.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER H. BAER, a citizen of Switzerland, resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Tobacco-Pipe Appliances; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal central section of a pipe, in perspective, having my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the invention.
The object of the invention is to facilitate the use of tobacco pipes, and it consists in the novel structure and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter B, indicates the bowl of a tobacco pipe, and C, the stem. Near the bottom of the cavity of the bowl is the opening a, of the draft hole 7). Within the bowl is located the base A,'of a support or holding device, made of a single piece of wire, said base having upward extending arms D, the ends of which turn outward and are designed to engage the margin of the bowl. 7 These out-turned ends or stops are coils of the wire having their planes at right angles to the plane of the base A, and serve to prevent the base from getting below the opening a. The base is made in the form of a small grating, the wire being turned in double spiral form from central reversed loops in a plane to diametrically opposite points, where it is turned upward to provide the straight arms D, and their outward bent or loop ends.
The holding device is easily placed in the bowl of a pipe and, when in poistion, serves to keep. the tobacco, which is placed in the bowl thereon, from clogging the bottom of the bowl, and in this way is designed to provide for freedom of draft. The arms D, being pliable and somewhat elastic, the device can be adapted to pipes of varying bore. The device is in this way designed also to provide for a free draft so that all the tobacco in the pipe is easily smoked up, and much which usually goes to waste is saved.
In order to remove the holding device from the bowl of the pipe, the out-turned loops or coil ends of the arms D, are easily takenhold of and raised, and in this way the burnt tobacco can be lifted out andthe ordinary troublesome and disagreeable work of cleaning the pipe bowl avoided.
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A removable tobacco holder for pipes, consisting of a single piece of wire having a double' horizontal coil base consisting of central reversed loops and concentric coiled branches extending respectively there from in the same plane, and opposite upright arms respectively extending from the ends of said branches and terminating in outward turned upright loop ends having their planes at right angles to the plane of the coil base.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER H. BAER.
