To all whom it may concern l3e it known that l, FRANK C. Anramnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New flaven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle Door Latches and Locks; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. and which said drawings constitute partof this application, and represent, in-

This invention relates to an improvement in a vehicle door latch and look.
In many forms of latches for vehicle doors the latch bolt is adapted to be moved backward by engagement with the strike plate, and means are provided to lock the latch so that it is not liable to be disengaged.
The object of this invention is to so construct the latch that it may be advanced beyond its latching position so as to perform the function of a lock; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I employ the usual casing 2 having a front plate 3 provided with an opening 4 through which the latch projects. The latch bolt is pivotally mounted in the case to turn on a stud 5 and comprises a latch nose 6 having a beveled face 7 by which the latch bolt may be forced inward by engagement with the bearing face 8 of the strike plate 9 which is provided with an opening 10 to receive the nose ofthe latch, and also with an elongated slot 11 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The outer wall of the latch bolt is cut away forming a segmental rib 12 extending from the extreme outer end of the latch nose and adapted to enter the slot 11 with the walls of which it will engage. This latch is adapted to be moved by a link 13 having a pin 14 at its outer end engaging with the bolt and pivotally connected at its inner end with an operating lever 15 which is pivoted in the case and extending upward therefrom to convenient position for operation. The latch bolt is pressed forward by a spring 16.
In the normal position of the latch and as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 1 of the drawings, the beveled nose of the latch projects beyond the face plate and acts as an ordinary latch; that is, when the door is closed the beveled nose engages with the strike plate which forces th nose of the latch into the latch case and permits the door to close. When closed the nose snaps forward into the opening 10 in the strike plate in the usual man ner hen thus engaged the latch may be retracted by moving the lever 15 rearwardly which will retract the latch. To look the door the lever 15 is moved forward as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings, and this turns the latch bolt so that the rib 12 engages with th strike plate and forms a lock, and so that it is impossible for the bolt to be disengaged by any amount of jarring. When it is desired to open the door the rearward movement of the lever will turn the latch bolt so as to retire it and permit the door to open.
I thus provide with a single bolt an ordinary latch and a lock.
I claim 1. A combined lock and latch comprising a casing, a pivotal bolt having a beveled nose and a segmental rib extending inward therefrom, and means for turning said bolt.
2. A combined lock and latch consisting of a casing, a bolt pivotally mounted in said casing and adapted to swing outward through the front of the case the outer end of the latch bolt having a beveled nose said bolt also formed with a segmental rib extending inward from said nose, an operating lever pivoted in the case, a link pivoted to said lever and in connection with said bolt whereby the bolt may be thrown forward or retracted.
