ADJUSTABLE BUTT-PLATE FOR GUN-STOCKS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN W. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Butt-Plates for Gun-Stocks;and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in gun stocks and more particularly to adj ustable butt or shoulder plates therefor.

The primary object of theinvention is to provide a simple, strong and efficient device of the character described which will allow the stock and the barrel of the gun to be adjusted to a great-er or less extent above the point where the butt plate is adapted to be engaged with the shoulder.

A secondary object is to provide adevice of this character which will allow the barrel and stock of said gun to be adjusted in a truly vertical plane rather than on an are.

With the above objects in View, the invention resides in certain novel featuresof construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings whereinr Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gun stock showing a butt plate in a lowered position;

In the accompanying drawings, I have shown a gun stock 1 having its outer end squared OK as at 2 for a purpose to appear. The stock 1 forms no, part of the present invention but closely coactstherewith.

Coming now more particularlyto details, aplate 3 having a vertical key it is secured to the squared end 2 of the stock 1, by means of screws 5 passing through said'key and into the body of the stock 1. On opposite sides of the key l, the plate 3 is recessed at its upper and lower ends to lighten its weight.

tical guideway 7 in its inner face and a depression 8 in its outer face. A slot 9 communicates with the guideway? and the de pression 8 and a threaded stud 10, carried rigidly by the key 4 projects through the slot 9 and receives a nut 11. I have shown the butt or shoulder plate 6 as formed of metal channeled out as at 12, for the sake of lightness and being provided on its outer edge with a plurality of horizontal corrugations 13 although the corrugations 13 may be omitted if desired, and a rubber pad 14, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 may besecured in any suitable manner, to the rear face of the shoulder or butt plate 6.

By the above described construction, it will be obvious that by loosening the nut 11 011 the Stud 10 the stock 1 and the butt plate 6 may be relatively adjusted in a vertical plane.-

Although I have described my invention with considerable minuteness, I do not wish to, beunduly limited to details other than those amplified in the claim.

What I claim as my invention is:-

The herein described butt for gun stocks comprising a fiat attaching plate shaped to fit the fiat end of the gun stock and formed on the center ofits outer face with a longitudinally extending key of rectangular shape in cross section and having counter sunk screw holes adjacent its ends and an integrally formed screw stud projecting at right angles from the center of the key, a shoulder plate having a flat inner face formed with a centrally and longitudinally extending channel to receive and slide on said key, the outer face of the shoulder plate being formed with a longitudinally extending recess and the bottom of the latter having a longitudinal slot to receive'said screw stud and a nut engaged with the projecting end of the stud and disposed entirely within said recess in the shoulder plate to adjustably clamp the latter on the attaching plate.
