Be it known'that 1, JOHN J. TA'rUM, a citizen 'of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Roofs, of which. the following is a specification.
I It is a well known fact that car roof sheets must be secured to the car in such manner that they are free to move relatively to each other and longitudinally as well as transversely of the car to compensate for the various movements of the. car when in transit known as weaving and jacking up of the cars in making repairs to the trucks, Wheels, etc. If the sheets are not movable relatively to each other and movable longitudinally of the car, they will tear along the caves of the car and the seams formed along their side marginal edges will open, thus causing the-roof to leak.
Thehobject of my invention is to construct a roof, the individual sheets of which are mounted of the sub-structure and movable transversely and longitudinally thereof, and whose side margins are interlocked to form seams and whose edges are loosely secured to a flashing on top of the car while an intermediate portion of the sheets overhangs the flashing and con'stitutesa j covering for the nails which secure the flash ing to the sides of the car, the sheet having a half roll at the caves to take up the transverse movements of the sheets and preventthe edge of the flashing cutting into the roof sheet and the edge of the roof sheet cutting the flashing; and with these and minor obje'cts in view m invention consists of the parts and combination of parts as will be fully pointed out. e

the type shown in my Patent No. 1,005,757, the salient feature of which is the thickened base which prevents damage to the flashing and roof sheets from cornering and side wiping. The top of the flashing is flush with thebottom of-the 'rabbet. The
flashing? is nailed to the-upper portionof the fascia 6, and bent overthe eaves of the car term nating in an upward. rebend 8 lying n the rabbet as clearly shown in the drawings. 1
One side margin or edge of the roof sheet 9 is rebent to form aside Wall 10 andan inwardly extending overhang 11 disposed over the main body of the sheet, while the other side margin or edge of the sheet isbent upwardly to forin awall 12 and thence outwardly from the sheet as at 13 and .terminating in an under rebend 14 spaced therefrom. The wall 12 is higher than thewall 10 on the same sheet, so that when two roofing sheets ar'e'brought together the wall 10 and overhang 11 of one sheet may be fitted loosely under the portion 13 and within-the rebend 14 ofthe adjacent sheet; the portion 13 serving as a covering for the joint between the two sheets, while theirebend 14 acts as a housin'gfor theioverhang ll of the adjacent sheet, thus completely closing the joint between the sheets against thepassage of water, snow, etc. The relative heights of the walls 11 and 12 are such that'the overhang 11 is spaced from the rebend and-the portion 13', thus ,preventing moisture from creep-' ing, up the wall 10 and along the overhang 11,.thence into the joint between the sheets inasmuch as the edge of the overhang acts as a drip by reason ofits being spaced from the rebend 14 and portion 13,whereby the moisture will drip from the edge of' the overhang, thence onto the rebend whichsheds it on the main body of the roof sheet owing to its'slight downward deflection.
From the above, it will beseen that I in: terlock the side marginal edges of the roof s eets to' form a seam which will permit'of t e sheets moving relatively transversely.- The roofing sheet is formed with a roll 15 at the eaves, then closely rebent at 16, and then -bent. to lie.,in the rabbet under the main body of the sheet as at 17'to lie within the rebend '8 of the flashing with which'it" forms a loose joint for the roof sheet ontop of the car, which is efliciently protected from the elements. 7 The closely rebent por-- "tion 16 of thereof sheets overlies the nails or the flashing and prevents them from working out and at the-same time protects them from the elements, thus eliminating corrosion between the nail heads and the flashing; The roll formed inthe roof sheets at the eaves of the car acts more or less as a shock absorber for the sheets and permits them to move transversely of the car without imposing any strain on the sheet or flashing, as all strains taken 'upby the roll are directed through the close re bend 16 against the side of the car. The
roll also eliminates the liability of the roof sheets tearing along theeaves of the car.
