To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD P. BENNETT. a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Rug Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to fasteners for securing rugs or carpets to stairs, and designs to provide improved fastening devices, whereby the rug or carpet may be removably secured to the corners between the risers and treads of stairs, and whereby the rug will be snugly held on the stairs.

The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of a portion of stairs showing one fastener in operative position, another fastener in position assumed while it is being fastened, and another in inoperative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing parts of the fastener in position assumed while the rug is being secured in position. Fig. 3 is a central section through the fastener in operative position. Fig. 1 is a perspective of the plate which is secured to the underside of the rug. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the locking-plate for securing the rug-plate on the tread. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of the screw.

In using rugs or carpets upon stairs, it is desirable that the same should be stretched t-hereover, and that the rug should be secured so that it may be readily removed when desired, and for this purpose each end fastener comprises one element or plate which is secured to the underside of the rug or carpet where it will be invisible and another element is secured or connected to the stairs. It is also desirable that these fasteners should hold the rug in the corners between the risers and the treads of the stairs so that it will snugly fit or lieon the stairs.

The plate 9 of each fastener is provided with holes 10 whereby it may be sewed to the underside of the rug 8 and this plate is also provided with a slot 11, through which a tape 11 on a pad 7 may be passed to secure the pad to this plate. Holes 10 are disposed so that one end of the plate will be free or unattached to the rug, so that being provided the 1 pass beneath shoulders 20, levers 13 latter may be flexed away from said end of the plate. This plate constitutes the fastener-element which is secured to the rug. Plate 9 is formed with a slot 12 through which a lever 13 is adapted to extend. The lower end of plate or lever 13 is provided with hook-lugs 14 which are adapted to fit under projecting lugs 15 on a screw 16 which is provided with a shoulder 17 adapted to engage the top of the tread to keep the lugs 15 spaced from the tread sufiiciently to permit hook-lugs 14 to pass thereunder. Shoulders 17 are formed on leverplate 13, so that when the plate is inserted through opening 12 in plate 9, these shoulders will engage the plate 9 at the sides of the opening, so that when the lever is forced into hook relation with lugs 15, and then swung backwardly, plate 9 and the rug will. be forced toward the riser, and into position where the plate can be easily forced downwardly toward the tread, to force and hold plate 9 and the rug over the tread. Screw 16 is secured in the tread on the stairs adjacent the riser. Lever 13, when passed through opening 12 in plate 9 is hooked under lugs 15 and then swung toward the riser until it is substantially parallel to the riser, and is adapted to lock plate 9 on the tread, with shoulders 20 under which lugs 21 on said plate will pass and be held. One end of plate 9 is bent upwardly as at 24c to bear against shoulders 20 and hold the lever so its hooks 14L will be held against lugs 15 of screw 16. Opening 12 is of sufiicient size to receive the head and lugs 15 of screw 16 when plate 9 is in operative position and it is also of suflicient size to permit hook-lugs 14 to he slipped through said plate.

It will be understood that these fasteners will be provided in pairs for each corner between the risers and tread, so that both sides of the rug will be held on the treads and adjacent the riser.

To secure the rug on the stairs, it is necessary to lie the rug in position on the stairs with the plates 9 which are secured to the underside of the rug near the sides thereof in position adjacent screws 16. Levers 13 will then be slipped through openings 12 in plates 9 until shoulders 17 engage the plates 9, hook-lugs 1 1 being then placed under the lugs 15 of the screws. Then the plates 9 are forced downwardly until they being swung backwardly toward the risers to lock plate 9 under shoulders 20 and lugs 14 under lugs 15 of the screw. The fastener will then be secured to the treads. Shoulders 17 on each screw then space lugs 15 from the riser and hook-lugs 14- straddle the shoulder to secure the fastener against lateral movement relatively to the screw, a space 30 being formed between said lugs to receive the screw.

By locking the successive pairs of fasteners to screw 16, the rug between each pair of fasteners will be stretched to snugly fit over the stairs and in this manner, the fasteningdevices serve to stretch as well as detachably hold the rug. To remove the rug, it is only necessary to fold back its upper end and then swing each pair of levers l3 forwardly and then release hook 14 from screw-lugs 15. lVhen plates 9 are released levers 13 may be separated from said plates.

The invention is not to be restricted to the details set forth, since these can be modified within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, means for connecting the lever to the stairs, and means on the lever for engaging the plate.

A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, means for connecting the lever to the stairs, said plate having an opening through which the lever passes, and means on the lever for engaging the plate to secure the rug on the stair.

3. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, means for detachably connecting the lever to the stairs, said plate having an opening through which the lever passes, and abutments on the lever for locking the plate on the 'tread.

4L. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, a hook on the lever, means adapted to be secured to the stairs and to which the hook may be connected, and means on the lever for holding the plate on the stair.

5. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, a hook on the lever, means adapted to be secured to the stairs and to which the hook may be connected, said plate having an opening through which the lever passes, and means for engaging the plate to hold it on the stair.

6. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, means for connecting the lever to the stairs, said plate having an opening through which the lever passes, and means on the lever for engaging the plate to hold it on the stairs, said lever having shoulders thereon for engaging the plate before the plate is secured on the stair.

7. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a screw having a projecting lug thereon in spaced relation from the stairs, and a lever held by said lug for securing the plate on the stair.

8. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the rug, a screw having a shank with a shoulder thereon, projecting lugs above the shoulder, and a lever having hooks for engaging said lugs and provided with means for holding the plate on the stairs.

9. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, a lever, means for detachably and pivotally connecting the lever to the stairs, said plate having an opening through which the lever passes to guide the plate, and means on the lever for locking the plate when the lever is shifted pivotally after the plate has been shifted into position adjacent the tread of the stairs.

10. A stair-rug fastener plate adapted to be secured to of a rug, a lever, means for connecting the lever to the stairs, the plate having an opening through which the lever passes, shoulders on the lever for engaging the plate be fore it is locked, and shoulders on the lever for locking the plate on the tread.

11. A stair-rug fastener comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the underside of a rug, and having an opening therein, a lever, a screw provided with a lug, a hook on the lever for engaging the lug on the screw to detachably and pivotally hold the lever, said plate being slidable on the lever, the latter having means for locking the plate in position on the tread and shoulders for engaging the plate before it is moved into locking position.
