To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SILAs W. PERKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. John, in the county of Whitman and State of Washington, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to ladders and more especially to an improved ladder adapted to be used in connection with an upper sleeping berth of a car or boat to facilitate entering and leaving the berth and also to permit the ladder to be conveniently folded into the berth and out of the way when not in use.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a ladder which is suspended from the berth in a novel manner and which comprises a pair of hinged sections to facilitate folding of the ladder into the berth when the ladder is disposed in a raised position.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinat-ions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of a car with the berth disposed in an operative position with my improved ladder attached thereto and showing the berth and ladder in dotted lines in their raised positions. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the ladder and berth looking toward one side of the car from the inside. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the connection of the ladder to the side of the berth.

Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a car body 10 in which a berth 11 is pivotally supported as shown at 12 upon an outstanding bracket 13 projecting from the side of the car, the said berth having a surrounding wall 14 and being adapted to be suspended by chains 15 or equivalent means for holding the berth in an operative or lowered position and in an upright or inoperative position as desired, these positions being clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The front portion of the wall 14 is provided on its inner side near its upper edge with a pair of inwardly projecting bearing loops 16 and a ladder 17 comprising a pair of sections formed of side bars 18 and rungs 19 connecting the same are hinged at their meeting ends as shown at 20 toward the side of the car from which the berth is suspended and the upper end of the ladder terminates adjacent to the top portion of the wall 14. A pair of hook members 21 are formed at the upper ends of the bars 18 of the upper ladder section, the said hook members being bent inwardly and downwardly and having their extremities 22 extending upwardly through the loop bearings 16 so as to retain the ladder from displacement when disposed in a supporting position as shown in full lines in the drawings whereby the upper section of the ladder may be folded upon the pivot or hinged connection 20 toward the upper section as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings and thus permit the berth to be raised out of the way when not in use.

I wish to have it understood that I may make such changes in the construction of the device as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims and it is further understood that the devioe under the statutes is protected for all desirable uses to which it may be put without. departing from the spirit of the invention. I also provide a pair of pivotal hooks 23 which are secured upon the outer faces of the bars and adjacent the upper ends of the upper section to engage eyes 21 carried adjacent the lower ends of the lower section of the ladder, to hold the sections together as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

I claim 1. The combination with a horizontal support having an edge wall; of loop bars pro jecting from the inner portion of the wall and a ladder comprising upper and lower sections hinged together at their meeting ends and hooks at the upper ends of the upper section pivotally engaging with the loop bearings, whereby when the sections are folded, the ladder may be moved into the support and means for holding the sections in folded positions.

The combination with a berth having a surrounding wall and means for supporting the berth in raised or lowered positions; of loop bearings projecting from the inner portion of the wall adjacent its upper edge and a ladder comprising upper and lower sections hinged toward the berth side at their meeting ends, the upper section being provided with inwardly extended hooks having upwardly extended extremities engaged With 5 the hearings to prevent displacement of the ladder in use and permit the same to be folded upon itself and moved into the berth.
