To all whom it may concern:

Be it 'known that I, LOTTIE WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Seam-Rippers, of which the following is a specification.

The general object of this invention is the provision of a seam ripping device of simple construction and which comprises a pair of pivoted handles having novel means connected thereto for cutting threads of a seam.

In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, preferred and practical embodiments being shown in the accompanying drawing Figure l is a perspective view of one embodiment of the device, showing the same in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of the device.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters designate similar parts, it will be seen that the invention comprises a pair of pivoted handles 5 and 6 which may be made of any material desired, said handles, in the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 being each provided with the loops or eyes 7 for receiving a finger and thumb of an operator. In the form illustrated in Fig. 3 one of the coacting handles is straight and elongated as indicated at 8, whereby the same may be grasped in the hand of the user thus facilitating the guiding of the device and steadying the same when ripping a seam.

Beyond the pivotal point of the handles 5 and 6 the same are twisted as indicated at 9 and formed with the flat transversely extending cutting blades 10 which have their forward transverse edges sharpened whereby the threads in a seam may be easily cut. The cutting blades are elongated so that when in use the same will present a rela tively wide cutting surface to the seam.

In the use of the device it is to be understood that as shown in the drawings the blades are inserted between the two sections of the cloth, the cutting edges positioned immediately adjacent the seam or line of stitching. In ripping the seam the blades are manipulated by slight spacing action so as to force the portions of the cloth overlying the blades apart with the tendency to stretch the threads of the seam to more readily permit severance of such threads as the ripper advances.

It is to be understood that each of the handles 5 and 6 and the cutting blades thereof are formed integral so as to strengthen the parts and also minimize the cost of producing the same for it will be readily seen that when the parts are made integral, they may be stamped out in a single process.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a seam ripper which is simple in construction thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum, and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.

What is claimed is 1. A seam ripper including pivotally connected handles, independent cutting blades projecting laterally in opposite directions from each handle, the end portions of each blade being disposed in relatively offset planes.

2. A seam ripper including pivotally connected handles, independent cutting blades projecting laterally inopposite directions from each handle, the end portions of each blade being disposed in relatively offset parallel planes.
