To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. Buuren, a citizen of the Dominion of (a11ada, and a resident of the city of Bellingham, in the county of Vhatcom and State of Vashnrg ton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting and Dieing. Devices, of which the following is a specification, this being a division of my application, Serial No. 660,156, filed November 13, 1911.
My invention relates to devices of the above type, having more particular reference to a construction primariljT designed to form heads or closures for receptacle bodies, and has for its primary object the provision of a novel construction which is comparatively simple in construction and efficient in operation.
Other objects will be set forth as my description progresses and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which I desire protection, succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, illustrating a practical embodiment of my invention and wherein like characters of' reference indicate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating the die mechanism in longitudinal section and the male forming member in advanced position. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the dies in open position. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section of the male die, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary plan of the de* vlce.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates a hollow die, fixed in any suitable manner to a frame 50, the same being hollow and open throughout its length and having one end provided with a cutting edge 1 and an inwardly tapering smoothing surface 1" over which the cut blank is drawn in the forming operation, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
Coacting with die 1 is a forming device 3, the same conveniently consisting of a tapered plunger, and being adapted to first form the head or closure for the receptacle, by forcing the blank inwardly into said die and then, by its further movement force the formed closure or head through said die where it can be removed from the former 3 by hand or otherwise.
Reference numeral 4 indicates a female die, the same being fixed on a head 4 of a hollow stein 5, slidahly supported in brackets 6 of the frame work and slidably receiving the stem 3 of former 3, which stein projects outwardly from said slide and has connection with an actuating lever 7, fulcrumed at 7 and connected with a driving rod 8, connected for reciprocatory movement by an internal cam 8 on drive shaft 9.
Slide is provided with a grooved collar 10 in which a shifting lever 11, fulcrumed at 11', engages. Lever 1l. is connected with a driving rod 12 which in turn is connected with an eccentric '13 of shaft 9.
Within die 4 is an annular presser ring 14 which is yicldingly held in advanced position by springs l5. Presser 14 which projects slightly from die 4 to thereby engage the paper a little in advance of the cutting of the blank, has its forward movement limited by stop 20 consisting of an external flange on its rear portion, which abuts an internal shoulder 21 ol" die 4.
The strip of paper 40 constitutes a source of supply from which the blanks are cut and in my said application Serial No. 660,156, filed November 13, 1911, the same is shown as being fed from a roller. I do not however, limit my present invention to such an arrangement, as it is apparent that paper in any suitable form can be fed by hand or otherwise between the dies.
In operation, following the positioning of the paper 40 between dies l and 4, die 4 is advanced to thereb cut the blank at which time presser 14 will be engaging the strip of paper 40 and serve to hold and smooth the edge portion of the cut blank as the latter is drawn into die 1 by former 3, which former is advanced immediately following the initial portion of advance movement of die 4. Former 3 is retracted with a comparatively quick movement simultaneously with the opening movement of die 4, and when arranged in normal position within the latter lies forwardly of the adjacent face 110 y it of head 4, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to be unaiiected by advance movement thereof. Frame 50, on which drive shaft 9 isjournaled can be of any suitable construction, as shown, it is provided with a top section 5l disposed beneath die l and on which the formed heads or closures can collect. Powerl can be applied to shaft 9 in any desired manner. For the purpose of illustration l have shown a belt pulley on said shaft.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
l. In a device of the character described, a hollow die having a cutting edge at the outer edge of one of its ends, said last-named end of said die being tapered inwardly from its cutting edge to its bore, a second die co-V acting with said first-named die for cutting a blank, means for reciprocating one of said dies toward and from the other, a former supported in said last-named die for movement independently thereof, and means for advancing said former into said iirst-named die.
2. In a device of the character described, a hollow die having a cutting edge at the outer edge ofone of its ends, said last-named end of said die being tapered inwardly from its cutting edge to its bore, a second die coacting with said first-named die for cutting a blank, means for reciprocating one of said dies toward and from the other, a former comprising a tapered plunger supported in said last-named die for movement independently thereof, and means for advancing said former into said rst-named die.
3. In a device of the character described, a hollow die having a cutting edge at the outer edge of one of its ends, said last-named end of said die being tapered inwardly from its cutting edge to its bore, a second die coacting with the first-named die for cutting a blank, a yieldingly-supported presser ring on the second die having an outwardly tapered edge adapted to engage thecut blank opposite the inwardly tapered end of the irst-named die, means for reciprocating one of the dies toward the other, a former l in the second die supported for independent movement, and means for moving said die.
