STAT
JOHN J. RIPPER, 0F FELLOWS, CALIFORNIA.
ROD-CLAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. RIPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fellows, in the county of Kern and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rod-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rod clamps and has particular application to an adjuster and clamp or grip for use in conjunction with the pump or polish rods of Artesian, oil and other deep well pumps.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide an adjuster and grip of the class described by means of which the polish rod of the pump may be connected to the walking beam and the rod adjusted and gripped in any desired position.
It is also my purpose to provide a device of the class set forth which will be con structed in such manner as to effectively grip the polish rod and whereby the possibility of mutilating or defacing the rod, incident to the adjusting thereof, will be eliminated. Furthermore, I aim to provide a rod adjuster and clamp for polish rods of Artesian and oil wells which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, eliiciency, durability and strength coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture and marketing and which may be readily installed, maintained and manipulated.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a combined rod adjuster or grip constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1,, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clamping device.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates a metallic stirrup comprising resilient limbs 2 having their upper ends connected through Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1913.

Serial No. 763,610.
the medium of a loop 3 encircling a rounded bearing bar or cross piece 4 extending laterally of the opposite sides of the stirrup and designed to be journaled in the usual bearings at one end of the walking beam. The limbs 2 normally tend to separate or move away from each other and are equipped at their free ends with jaws 5 formed with alining or cooperating grooves 6, 6 arranged in a vertical plane to receive the piston or polish rod 7 of an Artesian or oil well pump.
In order that the jaws 5 may be drawn together so as to grip the polish rod, I employ a clamping device composed, in the present instance, of a substantially rectangular collar 8 encircling the jaws 5, 5 and of slightly greater cross sectional dimensions than the similar combined dimensions of the jaws 5. One end wall of this collar is formed with a threaded opening in which is mounted a set screw 9 having the inner end thereof adapted to seat within a depression 10 formed in the respective jaw 5.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of employing my invention will be readily appar ent. It will be seen that I have provided a rod adjuster and grip whereby the polish rod may be connected with the walking beam of the mechanism and the rod adjusted and gripped in any position while standing on the derrick floor. Furthermore, it will be observed that the jaws 5, 5 and the clamping device associated therewith are so correlated and arranged as to minimize the possibility of mutilation or defacing of the polish rod.
I claim:
1. In a polish rod clamp, a metallic stirrup comprising resilient limbs, a loop con necting the upper ends of said limbs, a bear ing bar disposed within said loop and ex tending laterally of the opposite sides of said stirrup, jaws carried by the free ends of said limbs and normally spaced apart under the action thereof, and means for drawing said jaws together to grip the polish rod.
2. In a polish rod clamp, a metallic stirrup comprising limbs spaced apart, a loop In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature connecting the upper ends of said limbs, a in presence of two Witnesses.
bearin bar dis )osed Within said 100 and projecting laterz illy from the opposite sides JOHN RIPPER of said stirrup, and jaws carried by the free Witnesses:
ends of said limbs and designed to grip the R. N. HARRIS,
polish rod. W. J. HOLLAND.
