ROBERT JONES, 013 FORT ROUGE, WINNIPEG, CANADA.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J ones, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Fort Rouge, in the Province of lVinni-' One object of the invention is to improve 1 the construction of the gripping means for supporting the pencil which means is capable of attachment preferably to a hat, bu
can be as readily attached to the clothing.
' of the wings of the base.
Other objects and advantages will'be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. I
In the drawings: Figure] is a front perspective view of my improved pencil holder. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective view of the same.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawingsJO represents the base or support for the holder, which is preferably in the form of a spread eagle, the notches l1 and 19., respectively, at the'upper and lower portions of the wings being particularly adapted for supporting the pencil holding clip. To the rear of the base is secured a suitable attaching means as a safety pin 13, by means of which the device may be read ly attached to the clothing, of to a hat. The clipis formed preferably of a single endless piece of wire, and includes the vertical front parallel portions 14 which are disposed against the front of the base, and the vertical parallel rear portions which are secured in any suitable manner to the back or rear face of the base. Connecting the upper ends of the members ltand 15 are the curved portions 16, these portions engaging in the notches 11 at the upper portions The lower ends of the front members 14 are connected by a Specification of Letters Patent.

transverse member 17, while the lower ends of the rear members 15 extend forwardly beyond the base and in the notches 12 as indicatedat 18, where they project for wardly between'the members 141, over the transverse member 17 and beyond the front of thebase. The forward ends of themembers 18 extend vertically in parallel relation as indicated at 19 and are connected by a transverse member 20. i
The vertical members 14 are so disposed that their lower ends are spaced a greater distance from the base than their upper ends and formed of resilient wire. The pencil is placed transversely of the members 14: and by engaging the thumb under the member 17 and pushing down on the pencil, the
pencil will push back tightly clamped between the members 14 and 19; Attention is also called to the fact that the upper portions of the members 19 are curved inwardly so that the pencil will be properly seated and prevented from being forced upwardly by the resilient members 14, this member 14 pressing the pencil tightlv intothe curved portions of the members 14.
What is claimed is:
A pencil holding device comprising a base plate having upper and lower notches, means carried by the rear of the base for attaching the same to a support, and'a pencil holding clip formed of a single endless piece of spring wire and including vertical front and 'rear'portions disposed, respectively to the front and rear of the base, said rear members being rigidly secured to the rear of the base, the lower ends of the front members being directed outwardly, the lower ends of the rear membersextending forwardly be yond the front of the base and betweeh the front members, and upwardly and inwardly directed pencil holding members carried by said forwardly extending members.
Tn testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
