Description
UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES GRAVITZ, OF BUFFALO, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROCKlNG-CHAlRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 108.255, dated October 1l, 1870.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES GRAWITZ, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Rocking-Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in providing a rocking-chair with a horizontal revolving platform, which will enable the person sitting in the chair to turn the same in any direction; second, in providing a rockingchair with two curved rocker beds and guides for the rockers of the chair. I refer to the drawing, which makes part of the following specification, and which illustrates my invention more clearly.
The drawing represents my improved rocking-chair in a side view, part of the case and platform being shown in section, so as to show the construction more fully.
Letter A represents a case with legs to rest upon. It is provided on its lower side with a step, A, and ou its upper side and in its oenter with a box. A2. It is also provided with three rest-blocks, A".
B is a platform having on its lower side a steady pin or bolt, B, which bolt passes through box A2 and rests upon step A. It will be observed that by means of bolt B and boX A2 and step Al the platform may be revolved upon the case A, and that the platform, although turning freely upon case A, is nevertheless almost in close contact with the three rest-blocks A. This has been done to relieve bolt B and step A of any strain 'which might be brought upon the same by the weight of the person rocking in the chair.
C are two curved rockenbeds upon platform B.
D are four curved guides to keep the rockin g-chair in its proper position upon the curved rockerbeds. These guides D are each provided with a slot-hole, in which engage pins, which again are fastened to the rockers of the chair.
It will also be seen that a. rocking-chair, when constructed as described, will not only make a better rocking-chair for parlor, 8:0., use than those now in use, on account of its enabling the person sitting in the same to turn the chair into any position or direction, and thus always face the person spoken to, but it will also be admirably adapted to the use of a sieknooni, as it rooks easier, and allows the person sitting in the same to lean back farther, and give more satisfaction and comfort than the common rocking or easy chair, and there is no doubt but it will soon gain the popularity it fully deserves by its merits.
Having thus fully described my invention, I desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In combination with a rockiug-chain'the horizontal revolving platform B and case A, when constructed and operating as described.
2. In combination with a rocking-chair, the curved rocker-beds C and guides D, for the uses and purposes set forth.
CHARLES GRAVITZ.
