UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TI-IOlVfAS L. I-IAIRE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR 0F TWO-THIRDS TO DENNIS F. BRADY, OF PROVIDENCE, RI-IODE ISLAND.
DETACHABLE CALK FOB, HORSESHOES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS L. HAIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Calks for Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in detachable calks for horse shoes, and the object of the invention is to provide simple and improved calks which may be readily and easily applied to and removed from the shoe, and further to provide novel means for allowing adjustment of the calk sections so as to fit shoes of varying widths.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view of a horse-shoe with the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the invention in detached position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the calk sections, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the other calk section.
In accordance with the present invention, two substantially-T-shaped calk sections 1 and 2 are provided, each section having a pair of outwardly-projecting calks 3, which latter are arranged at the ends of the heads of the Ts. The shank of section 1 is provided with a longitudinal slot 4 and its upper face is provided with an outwardly extending lug 5 which is adapted to engage the top face of the shoe, which face is nailed to the hoof. The base of each of the ca-lks is cut away at 6 to form shoulders 7 which permit the calks to conformably engage the bottom face and inner side of the shoe, as depicted in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the shoulders 7 abutting the inner side face of the shoe. The shank of calk section 2 is provided with an upstanding rib 8, which conformably engages in the slot at of section 1. An aperture 9 formed in the rib 8 and the shank of calk section 2 receives a bolt 10, the head 11 of which extends or projects over the shank of calk section 1 as shown in dotted lines of Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be evident that the bolt 10 will permit of adjustment between the sections, allowing the same to be moved toward or away Specification of Letters Patent.

from each other so as to fit shoes of different widths. The nails 12 which secure the horse shoe in position are preferably arranged so that two of the same engage on opposite sides of the front calks 3 of the sections 1 and 2 so as to hold the calk sections against movement.
In use the bolt 10 is loosened and the sections contracted relative to each other and placed within the shoe, after which the sections are moved outwardly so that the lugs 5 engage the top face of the shoe and the cut out portions 6 have the walls formed thereby and the shoulders 7 engaged with the underface and inner side of the shoe. The bolt is then tightened, and since the rib 8 engages ir the slot 4 lateral movement between the shanks of the sections is prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a horse shoe, a pair of T-shaped sections, the head of each section having a calk at each end thereof, said calks extending be yond the outer side faces of the heads and being cutaway on their upper faces, the vertical walls formed by the cutaway portions being in alinement with said outer side faces of the heads and being adapted to contact with the inner side faces of the shoe, an outwardly extending lug on the upper face of each head located centrally of the space between the calks thereof to engage the upper face of the shoe, the shanks of the sections being arranged in overlapping relation, the shank of one section being longitudinally slotted and the shank of the other section being formed on its upper face with a longitudinal rib that is located centrally of the space between the sides of the last named shank and which is received in the slot of the first named section, and a bolt passed through said rib and the section carrying the rib and extending through the slot of the other section.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS L. I-IAIRE.
