lilllllllll wacam AZexanderJJ D ALEXANDER S. SPIEGEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MEANS FOR APPLYING- COLORED DESIGi-NS 'IO COMPOSITION ROOFING.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER. S. SPIE- out, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Apapply to the asphaltum coating grit or sand colored in any suitable manner so as to form a permanent carrier or vehicle, the sand being fed to the surface of the roofing through feeding mechanism which applies the clifferently colored sand or grit in attractive designs upon the asphaltum surface.
I have designed an improved machine for applying the colored sand or grit to the surface of the roofing and this, as will be more particularly hereinafter described, in-
cludes a structure of general cylindrical shape having rotary movement to and over a part of the periphery of which the composition roofing passes, and in passing receives the colored grit or sand in designs upon its surface, the designs being formed by the structure through a series of pockets to which the material is fed, these pockets being made in any desired form or shape. The roofing covered with asphaltum forms an adherent surface to receive the grit or sand and also closes the bottom of the pockets as it passes around the periphery of the cylindrical structure so that there is no intermixture of the differently colored material.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a diagrammatic view of the end of the cylindrical structure showing the feeding trough for the differently colored materials, the means for rotating the cylinder and the relation of the roofing material to the cylinder showing it as it passes to and from the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the machine. Fig. 3 shows a part of the periphery illustrating the pattern means. Fig. 4 shows the completed article. Fig. 5 is a detail of the pattern means.
The cylinder A is suitably supported in Specification of Letters Patent.

end frames and this frame is rotated through a gear 1, meshing with a rack 2. The composition roofing B with its asphalt coating passes over the roller a and is of a width as shown in Fig. 2, to pass between the end frames 3, 4, of the machine, being supported by rollers 5, 6, and in close contact with the periphery: of the cylinder, and the pattern means forming the design upon the surface of the coating, this pattern means consistmg of plates or castings '0, having the peculiar formation shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5. Two of the sections 0 are brought together, suitably secured and supported by rods 7 bolted to the end frames. The peripheral extremities of the sections 0 are of zig zag shape and the walls of the zig zag portion are inclined inwardly and two of the sections together form practically the shape of a diamond at their extreme periphery while the inclined walls form a hopper through which the sand or grit passes to the surface of the roofing which is inclosed within the margin of the diamond or other shaped opening formed by the sections. It will be observed that the sections 0 may be shaped at their extremities according to the charactor of the design or pattern which may be desired on the surface of the roofing and I have only shown the diamond shape as illustrating one form of design.
It will he observed in Fig. 2 that by supporting the end of the roofing material on a margin of the frame 3 an uncoated lap is left on the margin of the roofing, as also shown at 8 in Fig. 4. I feed the colored sand or grit or other material through the hopper C which is divided by a partition 9 for two colors and I provide feeding means in the form of a spiral screw 10 on a shaft 11 driven by a pulley 12, there being one of these feeding devices for each compartment within the ho iper, the hopper terminating in a cylinder (E' and the feeding mechanism being located in this cylindrical part. The cylinder C has openings on one side of the partition which are in line with the openings formed by two adjacent sections 0 and this opening is provided with a slide valve 13 which may be utilized to adjust the size of the opening or close it altogether. Just above the opening or adjacent thereto I locate a corrugated feed roller 14, which feeds the sand or grit through the opening and down through between adjacent sections 0 to the surface of the composition roofing which closes the diamond or other shaped opening formed by the adjacent sections. Upon the opposite side of the partition there is another opening in line with the next pair of sections 0 with a like feed roller, and this roller feeds to the surface of the composition roofing a different colored material. In the size of the machine illustrated in the drawing I utilize a full sized opening on one side of the partition with twohalf sized openings, and on the opposite side of the partition 9, alternately placed, there are two full sized openings, and this will produce the pattern shown in Fig. 4. The roofing passes around the cylinder while its asphalted surface is hot and adhesive, and hence the sand or grit readily adheres. Any surplus sand will fall off of its own weight as the roller passes over 6. In order to prevent adhesion of the particles to the frame of the machine I utilize rollers 15 to which may be fed kerosene or the like, and this will keep the machine free from the tendency of particles of the asphalt or grit to adhere. Any desired number of partitions may be utilized according to the number of colors which are to be used.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with supporting means for composition roofing, means for applying to said roofing a colored pattern or design arranged intermediate of the supports for the roofing, comprising a cylindrical rotating device having a skeleton periphery made up of open sections terminating in the form of design to be applied to the roofing, with openings to the interior, and means for feeding different colored sand or grit to the different design sections from the interior of the cylinder, the roofing forming the bottom of the open sections, substantially as described.
2. In combination witlrsupporting means for composition roofing, a skeleton cylindrical section interposed between the supporting means and adapted to receive the composition roofing around a portion of its periphery, the said periphery constituting a series of open designs in outline, and having passages leading to the interior, with feeding means for supplying one color to one or more sections, and for supplying another color to other sections so as to alternate or vary the pattern, the roofing forming the bottom of all the design sections and adapted to receive the sand or grit upon its adhesive surface from the interior, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a series of partitions terminating in open-ended designs forming a .skeleton cylinder, means for supporting composition roofing in close contact with the cylinder so as to form the bottom of all the design sections, in the rotation of the cylinder, means for supplying grit or sand of different colors, and means for directing one color to one design opening and another color to another design opening so as to vary the color of the designs, substantially as described. I

5. In combination with a skeleton cyline drical device havin means for rotating it, means for support-mg composltion roofing in contact with the periphery and moving from a feeding to a receiving roll with the rotation of the cylindrical device, the said cylindrical device having a periphery made up of all open designs, with means for feeding to said designs colored sand or grit while the design section is in contact Withthe composition roofing so as to apply one color of sand 'or grit within the walls of the design section, and another color within the walls of the adjacent section all from within the cylinder, substantially as described.
6. A feeding device for colored sand or grit to composition roofing, consisting of a hopper having a partition, openings from each side of said partition, and rolls for feeding the material through the openings.
7. A feeding device comprising a hopper, a partition therein, openings onopposite sides of the partition alternately arranged in relation to each other, rolls for feeding the material through the openings,' and means for agitating the material, substantially as described.
