To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN B. DnNisoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, and whose post-otliee address is 7 06 Main street, in said city, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Locks, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window-locks, and more particularly to the device described and claimed in United 'States Letters Patent, No. 934,145, issued to IDG September 14, 1909.
The object of my present invention is to provide certain new and useful t'eatl'lres, in order to simplify the construction and thereby to lessen the cost of mamrtacture in a device of this character.
The invention consists in the special. details of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved device, as applied to the top of the lower window sash. Fig. 2 is a partial edge view of the upper and lower sashes, in closed position, and illustrating the device as locked against movement of either sash. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, showing the device locked to the upper sash, as after the lower sash has been lifted to provide a partial opening in the window. Fig. 4; is a plan section taken on line :em of Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are perspective views of the main parts of my invention.
The principal members of my present invention comprise a latch a; a base Z1--, and a spring 0. The members (2- and b are each cut, punched and bent to a proper form from a ribbon of still metal of even width and thickness. The latch member ahas a flat uprightextension -01 whose lower part is bent, substantially at a right angle to the extension, to form a linger presser-plate --o The latch member --ahas its presser-plate a cut narrower than the normal width of the upright portion a in order to provide side legs "a a which are parallel to the extension and project below the bend or corner a* of said latch member, thus the legs Patented Dec. 23, 1913.

The leaf spring cholds the latch -a, by its fork -(r"-, confined between upwardly-extending lugs Z)'-, 5 and a backing Z), respectively formed by the rear narrow cut away seat portion -Z) oi the base member --b--, said lugs being relatively opposed to the legs a of the fork, and said backing extending above the bottom of the latter, in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 5. On the upper sash -Z-- is a vertically-arrangcd thin metallic strip c, which is secured to said sash by screws An elongated opening (t-- is formed laterally at the upper part of the extension oi the latch a--, to receive the head of either screw and to provide tor side movement of either sash. Each screw has a fillister head in order thatthe projecting shoulder formed thereon may serve as an abutment to prevent upward movement of the lower sash, after the device is in a locked position, in the manner shown in Fig. 3.

The tendency ot the spring -cis to keep the latch in a locked position against either screw-head of the upper sash, and the peculiar constriuxlion of the fork --n-- and Stilt forms a pivot center tor the members ---(zand --7) that permits of being brought close to the upper sash, and hold the latch normally at a slight incline toward the latter whereby a powert'ul resistance is maintained to overcome a lifting movement of either sash, when the device is in locked position. The spaced distance between the locking points f, is about three inches, so that when the dc- \'ice is brought to a locked position against the upper screw-head as in Fig. 3, a ventilating opening is then provided in the window by the amount at liitcd movement of the lower sash, equal to the spaced distanee ot the locking points of the device. lly means ot the strip --c-- the latch prevented from bearing upon and causing wear of the wooden sash.
Having described my improvements, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a window-dock, the combination or a base member adapted to be secured upon the lower sash and having opposed upturned lugs and a backing, so as to provide a seat between the lugs and the backing; a latch member having a flat upright extension and an outwardly bent lower part to form a fin ger Presser-plate, and leaving a fork at the bend to embrace and rest upon the seat of said base member and said latch member provided with an opening in its extension; spaced projections forming locking points carried by the upper sash to enter the opening of the extension of said latch member, and a yielding member to hold the latch in a locked position against movement of the lower sash. 2. In a window-lock the combination of a base member adapted to be secured upon the lower sash and having upturned portions so as to provide a seat therebetween and ex tending close to and longitudinally of the upper sash; a latch member provided with an entering opening and said member bent to form an outwardly projecting presserplate and leave a fork beneath the latter to embrace and rest upon the seat of said base member; a vertically-arranged strip; fillisterhead screws for securing said strip to the upper sash and to act as spaced locking points of the device and a leaf spring having one portion secured beneath said base member and its other portion secured on the rear face 01" said latch member, to hold the latter in a locked position after the head of either screw has passed through the enter mg opening.
8. In a window-lock, the combination of a base member adapted to be secured upon the lower sash and provided with a seat, as b designed to be located close to and extend longitudinally of the upper sash; a latch member having a flat perforated extension which terminates at its lower part with a fork, as a-, whose bottom forms a pivot bearing to rest upon the seat of said base member, and said latch member having an outwardly curved finger-plate above its pivot bearing for pressing upon to unlock the device; spaced projections carried by the upper sashto enter the perforation of said latch member, and a yielding member can ried by the device to maintain the latch in a locked position with either projection on the upper sash.
