UNITE STA PATIENT @FFIQE.
MEYER LANGERAK, OF KNOXVILLE, IOWA.
SHOE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MEYER LANGERAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Marion and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in shoes, the object of which is to facilitate the operation of putting on and removing the shoe.
My invention consists in providing a shoe with front and heel sections hingedly connected so that the heel section can be swung into open or closed positions with respect to the front section, there being improved means provided for locking the heel section against relative movement with respect to the front section when the heel section is in a closed position.
Other objects and features of the invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating one form of my invention detached from a shoe and with certain parts in an open position. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the device in the structure of the shoe with the latter indicated in dotted lines, the heel section being shown in a closed position. Fig. 3, is a View similar to Fig. 2, showing the heel section in an open position. Fig. 4:, is a bottom plan View of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is a top plan view thereof.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout the different fig ures of the drawing.
The device of my invention is illustrated in connection with a shoe made with front and heel sections, 1 and 2, the latter numeral indicating more particularly the sides of the counter of the heel section. The front section 1, is provided with extensions 3, and means is provided for detachably securing the extensions 8, to the sides of the heel counter, and as shown, said means may comprise openings 4, in said extensions and studs 5, on the sides of the heel counter.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 4 and 5, 7, designates an elongated portion or tongue adapted to be secured to the bot tom of the front section, preferably between the insole and outsole thereof, the said Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 6, 1911.

tongue 7 being provided with openings for passage therethrough of any suitable form of securing means, as by stitching or sewing the elongated portion to the insole and outsole through the openings provided therein. The tongue 7 is shown formed integrally with a member 6, which is provided with a downwardly extending latch member 10,
having a notch 11, the heel proper being suitably recessed as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to receive said latch member. The heel section is secured to a leaf or member 8, which is preferably hinged at 9, to the member 6. The hinged member 8, is provided with an opening for passage therethrough, or to receive the latch member 10, and the hinged member 8, is provided with a latch coacting with the notch 11, the parts forming cooperating means carried by said members 6 and 8, to hold the same against relative movement when the heel section is in operative relation with respect to the front section. The member 6 is provided with a row of openings whereby it maybe stitched to the insole which is designated in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 8 as extending over the member 6. As shown, said latch is in the form of a loop 12, having shanks l3 and 14:, slidable in guides 15, carried by the hinged member 8. A spring 16, is coiled about the shank 18, and serves to normally hold the latch 12, in engagement with the notch 11, 0f the latch member 10. I conveniently chamfer the latch member 10, so that the latch 12, will be automatically engaged therewith when the heel section is moved into a closed or operative position with respect to the front section. In order to unlatch the heel section, I extend the shank 13, sufiiciently forwardly of the heel proper to enable it to be grasped by the user to unlatch the heel section.
It is believed that the utility and advantages of the invention will be clear from the foregoing, and while I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim:
1. In combination, a shoe made in front and heel sections, rearward extensions formed upon the sides of said front section, means for detachably securing said extensions to the sides of the counter of said heel section, a member secured to the bottom of said front section, a member hinged to said first-named member and secured to the bottom of said heel section, and cooperating means carried by said members adapted to hold said members against relative movement with said heel section in operative relation to said front section.
2. In combination, a shoe made in frontand heel sections, a member having an elongated portion secured to the bottom of the front section, a second member hinged to the first named member and connected to the heel section, said second named member having an opening therein, a lug depending from said first named member, and adapted to project through said opening, and means carried by said second named member adapted to engage said lug to hold said. members against relative movement with said heel section in operative relation to said front section.
3. In combination, a shoe made in fi'ont and heel sections, rearward extensions formed upon the sides of said front section, means for detachably securing said extensions to the sides of the counter of said heel section, a member having an elongated portion adapted to be secured between the insole and outsole of the front section, a second member hinged to the first named member and connected to the heel section, said second named member having an opening, a latch lug depending from said first named member and being provided with a latch notch, said second named member being provided with an opening to receive said lug, and means carried by said second named member for engagement with the notch of said lug to hold said members against relative movement with the heel sect-ion in operative relation to said front section.
